Apple Watch Series 2

Hi,

Have to ask the question, as Apple hinted that the GPS in the new watch will allow access to developers. Will Strava look at a native Apple Watch app which uses the GPS on the watch?

  • I have a work around the problem for now.

I use the standalone Runkeeper app on the AW2 to record the activity and then sync it to strava using the Tapiriik website - https://tapiriik.com.

I found it works really well and I can leave my phone at home.

Apologies if this has already been mentioned before.

  • Strava: This is so frustrating and annoying. Everybody's waiting for the update, announced for "early 2017" - whatever this is supposed to mean. Please give us an update on the timing issue - you're about to lose a bunch of potential / actual premium users.

  • It's now February 1st, 2017 and I have gone through a number of apps which are very inconsistent. RunKeeper and Pear Sports are the only two native Watch apps besides Apple Workout and NRC. The GPS is very inaccurate even with Apple. RK is all over the place and although Pear is more detailed is shoes straight runs as zig zags. Most of my friends are on Strava b/c they all have Garmin and the post via Conect. I hope Strava gets this out soon and that it works. I need some to post to social, track w/o the phone accurately, read my HR through my Bluetooth strap and just work. I got way too much dad a in too many apps.

  • Sadly, cancelled my Premium as well. I might renew once it gets released, but for now, it is taking way too long.

  • It's been coming soon for a while and then changed to early 2017. Would be good to know how early it's going to be.
Is it early as in the first half?, first quarter?
I do 2 rides every day with commuting so am happy to beta test for you if it helps release it faster.

  • The workaround is just ridiculous, gave up after 2 weeks, so have been using the native apple watch workout app, (as accurate as my old garmin and picks up satellite instantly) and have found myself actually enjoying running more, kinda like a social cleansing, just need to delete fb and i will be free!! so another one bites the dust... I wouldn't hang around too long Strava i think your community are getting ants in their pants about this and the aw2 isn't a cheap purchase for most of us to just discard for a few (or more!?) months.

  • Any. news or update related to this issue?

Due to the fact that the curr not Strava App isn't yet compatible with Apple Watch Series 2 with integrated GPS I meanwhile decided to run with my Apple Watch Series 2 without my iPhone and was hence forced to start using the integrated sports app instead of the Strava app which also lead me not to extend my Premium subscription.

According to you post dating back to October the new Apple Watch Series 2 Strava app would be available early 2017.

when can we expect for it to be finally available?

  • A few requests:

    1) Please read the stride rate (running cadence) from both the Apple Watch (all of them) and iPhone (using the motion coprocessor).

    2) Give us the option to use the GPS from the Apple Watch Series 2 exclusively, even if we’re carrying our iPhone.

The reason is some of us carry our phones in a belt/pouch/pocket, with things like magnets/clothing/our body creating interference with reception. The Watch, being on the wrist, has a much more open and reliable connection to the satellites.

Apple Watch Series 2 has a large-enough battery that, starting from full, it can easily accommodate a half-marathon using its builtin GPS. You could even add a fallback so that if the battery drops below eg. 20%, it switch over to the iPhone’s GPS instead.

I’d like to keep carrying my iPhone for the larger music library I have on it, and so I can get audio cues. But I don’t want that to penalize me with the less-accurate GPS from the iPhone. Forcing Strava to use the Watch’s GPS solves that problem.

    3) Please keep querying GPS location as long as the app remains open, even before starting an activity. Or find a way to improve the accuracy of the starting point of an activity.

Currently, using the Watch app, I frequently have to trim the start of a run because it’s somewhere in Nepal.

    4) Please let Premium users send beacons from the Watch.

  • I would love the new app on the Apple Watch Series 2 to include a comprehensive interval timer for run and bike workouts. We should be able to configure each interval to be based on either time or distance and then adjust the number of repetitions.

I also agree that adding swim workouts would be awesome! Both pool and open water.

And then take the interval timer another step further...be able to create multidsport workouts for duathlons and triathlon complete with transition time recording. Basically like a Garmin 920XT.

  • Been following this thread since Getting an Apple Watch for Christmas! Very disappointed to see it still isn't resolved. I'm currently training for the London marathon and finding running with my phone for long distances not great. Will be cancelling my premium subscription as I don't see the point in paying when they can't be bothered to make an app for one of the biggest selling smart watches!!

  • Workaround: Nike app on Apple Watch 2 > Import from Nike using RunGap > "Share" to Strava using RunGap Swag Bag (costs a few bucks every 3 months)

Occasionally you have to wait a few hours to Inport from Nike. When sharing to Strava from RunGap, I also send to SmashRun for redundancy at the same time. It's an easy process.

  • Hello STRAVA TEAM,

So first of all thanks for the recent update for APPLE WATCH SERIES 2.

As I understand now we don't need to carry our phones for bike rides and running. That's great!

Also now we can switch sports easily directly on Apple watch. That's also great!

The only thing missing is update for swimming. On my Applewatch Strava app there is no option for swimming.   When do you plan to add swimming option for Applewatch app?

You have also renamed the STRAVA APP as APP for biking and running. Does this mean there will be a separate app for swimming?

    Kind regards,

    Almaz

  • Well as it does still not work on the STRAVA App without the iPhone I used the Runkeeper app on the AW2 to record the activity and then sync it to strava using the Tapiriik website - https://tapiriik.com.

And this worked out very well, thank you @Andy Brooks!

  • I'm confused. Has the Apple Watch app been updated or not? It seems like I got an update that fixed some issues, but now when I use the app on my watch, and stop my ride, it still runs in the background and kills the battery if left running for an extended period. This leads me to believe it's using GPS on my watch.

Why doesn't it behave the same as on the phone, where it stops tracking location when I stop recording, even if I don't finish the ride? This used to be an issue on the phone as well, but at some point they fixed it, as it seemed to be a bug. If I stop recording, stop using my GPS to track location. It's simple.

  • I don't think the new app update has completed the App Store review process yet but based on the new website info I'm assuming that submission has happened and it should show up imminently. Check the release notes on the App Store for info on what's installed. Last update was 6 Feb and only says bug fixes. I'm assuming this is not the new GPS update for AW2

  • I heard through a customer support ticket that the update for Apple Watch 2 should be coming out within the next month.

    Quote:

"Yes! We are excited to get that out. We are close, and you should be seeing that in about a months time give, or take."

  • Ive just purchased an apple watch Nike+. On the internet it says that i can use the strava app on the apple watch without needing my phone. Although as soon as my watch isnt connected to my phone it stops.

When is this going to be sorted as the Nike+ app does it right now

  • Well this is some VERY misleading info. I just tried the app on the watch (which took forever to install). I had to stop and start it several times. Once it finally installed it's very sluggish. I started a test with the phone near and I stopped the to see if it recorded which it did. I found the display to be too simple.

I tuned off bluetooth to ensure that I was recording straight from the watch as it says on the Strava homepage (see image). The red phone icon confirmed. When I went to record, I got a message about making sure bluetooth on my phone was on. I immediately knew it wasn't going to work. I started the test activity and walked around. Everything continued to register zero. No time, no distance, nothing. I stopped it on the watch and went to the phone and reconnected bluetooth and went to the app were it showed my activity stopped currently in session.

Obviously, Strava hasn't updated anything for the standalone watch app and in their latest update it says nothing about creating a Watch 2 standalone capability (bug & fixes only). I would think with as much as being posted and flak for the last several months it would be an big announcement. Strava has FAILED!!! Lame!!!

  • I guess I am confused by the recent update. I also saw that Strava updated the website and it no longer says early 2017 and that the app was updated on my phone.

Can anyone confirm that they used their apple watch 2 with the update and recorded your run using the GPS in AW2?

  • I have the app and keep it fully updated. It will not work on my watch without being connected to my phone.

Am I doing something wrong or is the new app announcement in the Strava website simply a crock of shi....?
