Apple Watch Series 2

Hi,

Have to ask the question, as Apple hinted that the GPS in the new watch will allow access to developers. Will Strava look at a native Apple Watch app which uses the GPS on the watch?

  •   Yes please.  I just bought the Apple Watch 2.  I am disappointed to find that the current Strava app does not support GPS on the Apple Watch 2.  Instead it needs to use my iPhone GPS with the Strava app.

I was hoping to use this in my half marathon, which I am due to run in a weeks time.  Looks like I will have to stick with my trusty Fitbit Surge.

It would be good to know if this is even possible, or if Apple are going to restrict app developers, because they want to continue to use a closed system and prevent 3rd parties from enhancing their product.

  • Yes, I have searched internet to learn about Strava integration with the series 2 watch GPS and found nothing. I am also interested in swim integration from the activity app with Strava. Any response, Strava team?

  • It is somewhat embarrassing that on a side Apple doesn't provide a way to export/share workout's data and on the other Strava is still quiet on the topic.

  • Guys, I think we can forget about the swim aspect. I've been using Strava for years and swim has never been included, despite calls for it.

  • I purchased the apple watch series 2 when I found out that it had a gps chip in. But much to my surprise...no 3rd party apps support it. There are plenty of 3rd party apps that you can load on it...Strava, Polar, Wahoo, and of course Nike...but when you go for your run...expect to carry your iphone. The apps do not track gps data unless your phone is tethered. So whats the point of having a gps? Apples stand alone workout app that just about every serious runner does not and would not ever use will of course record gps data, but thats it.

    Here is the kicker though:

You cannot upload that workout to Strava...or anywhere.

So dont go buying the Nike version iwatch and expect to go for a run without your iphone.

I loaded all 4 apps on my watch...none of them work without the phone.  Wahoo does provide a simple feature for uploading to Strava which is nice.  (I purchased the wahoo tickr cause I wanted to use a proper heartrate monitor for running.  The device is pretty cheaply made compared to polars and garmins, but it did the job.  It would probably break though if you were running something like Toughmudder and you were climbing a wall and put your weight on it.).

  • As soon as the strava app works well on the new iwatch series 2 or nike+ sync goes automaticaly, I will have one! I realy want to keep on using strava and leave my iphone home on a run. All strava users unite, don't buy untill it is fixed, support strava on this!

  • This whole conservation is justified. The tech is there. Let us continue to make Strava the central app for fitness tracking. Currently, Apple's workouts won't export to Strava nor can we initiate a workout from a GPS-enabled device (Apple Watch Series 2) through the Strava Apple Watch app. This can't possibly be permanent, can it?

  • Hi Strava, I don't expect you to share timelines but it would be great to understand your strategy for this. I'm interested in buying a watch specifically for working out and the Series 2 would be great for this.

Can you please share your thoughts with your appreciative audience? :)

  • Absolutely agree some news on this would be great, i'm considering buying an Apple watch and I've been using Strava for over 2 years. Would be a shame to walk away and have to use another app for my fitness tracking

  • So disappointed that I can't use Strava just with the watch, why is this not ready when other apps are?? As I don't want to take my phone out with me I've turned to Nike for now, come on Strava, sort it out please!

  • Total nonsense that I should be stuck bringing my phone along for runs. This is strike 2 for Strava. First now interval workouts, now this nonsense. STRAVA, fix this issue before you lose me and others to Nike.

  • Hello - I am keen to buy the apple watch 2 but won't be until it will push data to Starva or the app can run on the watch GPS - keen to keep up to date with this thread. Look forward to more detail Strava!

  • Thought it would be good to update you all.  I submitted a feature request via the iPhone Strava app and got the following reply:

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Strava. We currently have a Strava app available for the Apple Watch, but it does not support the standalone GPS in the watch. However, it is something that we are currently exploring adding support for.

    Sorry for any inconvenience.

    Best,

    Strava Support Team

It's good to know that it's something they are at least thinking about.  I have Apple Watch Series 2.  I will try to update this thread if any new update happens.  It would be good for the Strava Support team to actually update this thread directly though.

  • For Strava the Apple Watch is a big opportunity. But they are deadly slow in the development of new apps/features.

  • I got a similar response. Not completely comfortable with the word 'exploring'. Suggests that the new watch architecture will require a complete re-write. Suspect the current application is little more than a window on the phone app, which does suggest we could be waiting for a while.

In the meantime I will probably move over to Nike Run Club which can integrate with Strava via some third party tools. Not ideal, but might be the only way forward.

Note that the Run Club updates are not quite here yet, but I believe they are expected this month (obviously in time for the release of the Nike version of the Apple Watch).

  • Thanks everyone for your enthusiastic questions regarding Strava and the Apple Watch 2.

We are excited to see that Apple is introducing a native GPS into the Series 2 of the Watch. We are actively looking into how we can extend Strava's existing Apple Watch app to take advantage of the native GPS.

Please follow this discussion to stay tuned.

  • I saw today that Pear fitness has released an app that runs on the Apple Watch Series 2 without an iPhone and tracks runs. It claims to be able to sync to Strava. I've not tried it yet, but it suggests that it can be done. So, Strava should be able to get it done, too.

  • As an alternative until the official Strava app supporting the Series 2 GPS becomes available, Pear Sports has an app that is currently available that uses the Series 2 GPS.  The app also allows direct export to Strava.

I have used it a few times, and it works OK.  The GPS track looks a bit squirrelly for some reason, but it seems stable, doesn't crash, and records HR data fine.  It is far from perfect, but it is the best alternative available right now.  Even though it's a bit rough, Kudos to the Pear Sports people for at least having something available just a few weeks after the Series 2 launched.
