Apple Watch Series 2

Hi,

Have to ask the question, as Apple hinted that the GPS in the new watch will allow access to developers. Will Strava look at a native Apple Watch app which uses the GPS on the watch?

  • I can't understand why it needs such long time to come up with Apple Watch S2 GPS support. I would be very surprise if the team didn't plan ahead of time for such a big product release. I like Strava very much, but it now opens up opportunities to its competitors.

  • Although I'm not currently subscribed to Premium (I did not really see the benefits), native support from Strava on the built-in GPS (i.e. run without iPhone) on Apple Watch Series 2 would be a reason for me to upgrade to Strava Premium.

So, Strava, do you want my business?

  • I would assume given the deal with the Nike edition that perhaps Nike paid to have early API access and be Apples partner?  Again its a guess but I imagine new apps will be along soon.

  • Hi All

I have tried the PEAR app this evening. It does indeed track the workout without the iPhone. It also connects with Strava, jackpot I hear. Unfortunately the app is pants, and while the workout uploads to strava the map, if there is one at all, does not! Frustrating to say the least.

I must say say I personally don't mind taking my iPhone out with me as I like to listen to Apple Music playlis whilst running. I also like to take photos whilst out too, so my trusty quad lock and iPhone go with me. However , having said this, I would still like to see a much better Apple Watch experience whilst using Strava.

  • Apple have confirmed that developers can make use of the local GPS and Strava have confirmed that are looking into how best to integrate this into their application.  It isn't quite as straight forward as re-code to use local GPS, it's likely that the lack of 'tethering' to your iPhone means they'll have to add addition code to their Watch app to work independently.

So in short - there is enough information out there from Apple, Strava and other developers to rest easy.  Strava are clearly going to give you what you (and I) want... we just need to watch this space.

Following Strava on Twitter is a good idea! :)

  • @Mark Greaves, you can actually load a playlist on the actual watch, so that's not really a reason to have your phone along. This has been the case since the first watch came out, though hardly anyone seems to know this. With gps this watch is basically perfect for a runner like me that likes music, heart rate and gps all in one place. Hopefully strava can get it to work soon!

  • joining from the previous very long running thread of premium customers asking for turn by turn directions ahead of low value stuff like Beacon. Looking forward to hearing that Strava will update functionality with the Apple Watch

  • @Sam Daams Yeah I am aware of this feature however I like the Apple Music playlists i.e. The ones you stream. Can I ask which headphones you use, I know it's of subject. Nonetheless

  • @Mark Greaves ah, ok, yeah, we're a ways off that coming in on the watch I guess :) Jaybird X2's at the moment, though will probably try the AirPods when they hit the market.

  • @Mark Graeves - Any playlist you listen to on Apple Music can be downloaded to the Watch. Just add the playlist to your library and sync it to your phone. The tracks will then download to your phone and then sync to your watch.

  • I'd be happy to participate as an Alpha or Beta tester. Got the Series 2 in the hopes that you'd have your app updated quickly. Upgraded to premium and everything to be prepared!!

  • Appple watch series 2 has also introduced swimming. Would Apple Watch  Strava app be able to add swimming (open water + pool) to its list of activities?

  • That would be awesome Elle! I'm anxiously awaiting the purchase of an AW2 for Strava's integration with native GPS.

    Please do keep us posted.

    Cheers

  • As I am already a tester for some well-known app developers and a former tester in a software company, I would really love to participate in a beta program.

Devices: iPhone 7 Plus 128GB, Apple Watch Series 2

Please let me know, if you are interested :)

  • @ Chris Sturt
Pear has released an app that allows to run without the phone, uses AW2 internal GPS and exports your run including the map to Strava. So I think access to GPS is open for everyone.

I use that Pear-App actually and eventhough it's not really what I want to use for a longer time, it's the best intermediate solution to run without your Iphone and being able to export your data till Strava & Co. release their apps.

The problem is - as someone else already mentioned - that Strava & Co. have to develop compleately new apps and not just updating the existing ones. Those were some kind of external monitors of the native app on the iphone. To be standalone they have to transfer the whole code/software into the watch-app.
    What about segments?
    What about audio-feedbacks?
    ...

But lets wait. I think mid-November or by the end of the year we will get the standalone app.
Actually I'm wondering if Nike releases its app by the end of October when the Nike-Watch will get on sale.

  • Please get on this Strava!

    1. We want to be able to go for a run, ride, swim or whatever without taking our phone out with us!
    2. We want the heart rate data to be captured as well

Please get on the case ASAP!

    Thanks

  • How can this not be a feature already? Surely Strava can get this done.

    It would be great!

  • Is there any update here?

Kind of disappointed there hasn't been more open communications from the company about their plans with this feature. If you are keeping quiet hoping for some big reveal that will delight users I'm sorry to tell you that ship has sailed. There is no excited mounting anticipation, only growing frustration with every passing day without an announcement of some sort (or a timeline, or the actual feature release).

  • Is there any further news on this? Just bought a series 2 watch and bit disappointed to see that I still have to take my phone to be able to download activity to Strava - not an issue for running but I can't take my phone to bootcamps etc. Had hoped that I could just sync the activities recorded using the phone to strava much like I can with my garmin or use the Strava app without a phone now that the actual watch has GPS on it. Hoping Strava catches up soon!

  • At the risk of stating the obvious, Series 2 support would also be useful while cycling. While I can't imagine a scenario where cycling _isn't_ supported, I'll weigh in here as insurance.

  • I'll be forced to switch from Basis Peak to Apple watch too, and if there is GPS in the app I'll get the series 2... otherwise I save dome cash and go for he series 1!

  • @Fulco de Vente - Sadly this is not correct. Whilst the app exists, it does not utilise the internal GPS within the watch.

All of us are able to read and if you look at the page you have linked to, it does not mention whether the current Apple watch app uses the watch GPS.

Sadly I can confirm that the current version of the app does not yet do this. The latest round of updates were pushed out by Strava on the 10th of October and these were bug fixes - No switch to the apple watch internal GPS was added.
