Apple Watch Series 2 GPS support?

When will Strava update its Apple Watch app to utilise the GPS and optical heart rate monitor built into the Apple Watch Series 2?

I won't be replacing my Garmin Forerunner 630 until there is full Strava compatibility with the watch without having to run with my phone.

  • Either that or expand the Health connection to allow reading workouts from the activity app, stored in the health app, into Strava

  • I have the same request. Today I was running at first time with my new Apple Watch S2 and Strava app in Watch is only like remote controler of iOS app. So without your phone it not working.

That for I was today running with native Apple Watch workout app, but this app cant sync data to Strava profile :/

  • Waiting for this big time, wanting to use my new GPS Apple watch with Strava for running!  Sold my Garmin so this couldn't come quick enough :-(

  • Would be great just to get a "Yep, we're working on it." or "We have to overcome this obstacle first."  The silence is deafening on this.

I'm waiting for some sort of indication that support will eventually come (or not) to the WatchOS app so I can make a decision on a new watch prior to my next race (mid-October).

Strava is the preeminent exercise app (in my opinion) and not addressing this in some way is a major misstep in customer service.

  • To be honest, I'm still not convinced that this will be a replacement for a Garmin, for competitive runners at least - the lack of a physical start/stop button would make it unsuitable for use in race situations (what use is a 1, 2, 3 countdown after the gun has gone off?!) and I want to be able to see time, distance, lap pace and average pace on the same screen like I can with my Forerunner 630.

  • +1 for this request.  Seems a logical progression for the app, may have to suspend premium for a while as I'm now running without my phone

  • Ditto on this.  There was an update came through today, but no change.  Would be great to know they're working on it, even if it takes a while.  Runkeeper have said they are working on theres which will hopefully be out soon, so let's see who gets it done first :)

  • I just found this tweet from Strava Support yesterday:

Sounds like they're looking at it. Would still appreciate some sort of formal statement regarding their intentions and likelihood of success.

  • +1 for me too. My Nike edition watch will arrive in a few weeks and at that point I'll have to decide what to do about my exercise data. Having to take my phone with me when I'm out running would be a real backwards step. At least if I knew that the Strava app was likely to be able to run standalone soon then I'd be more likely to wait and stick with Strava

  • FYI "Pear Sports" was just updated to allow GPS use without the phone.  And you can sync runs to Strava.  Catch is that you have to pay for it after 30 days, but at least you'll be able to see what it's like to run without a phone.  Much prefer a standalone Strava implementation.
