Custom Ride Type Tags

Allow users to setup their own tags under "Ride Type Tagging".

I have the ability to tag a ride as a "Commute" which is great but I'd like to add "Work" so I can tag an activity to show it was done at work. Obviously few people need this but if the feature was opened up to allow user unique tags to be created then it could really open it up to a lot of opportunities.

  • I would love to see this option too.  Think Evernote but for Strava.

Since the Ride Types are so limited (Ride, Race , Workout)  I would love to create custom tags to differentiate MTB from ROAD and then other categories such as Downhill, CrossCountry, Snow Bike, Local, Away, etc.

I know I could possibly fake this with additional Bike profiles and assign rides to those bikes, but it won't allow a nerd like me to segment my rides by 2-3 characteristics unless I create like 30+ bike profiles...

Is this feature going to be expanded?  Or not?

  • I was just thinking this the other day.  Custom tagging and customizable reports would be beneficial in segregating social, training and race rides as well as road vs MTB vs gravel vs commuting.

Maybe even yearly mileage by bike because N + 1 is basic math.

  • It's really pathetic that you can't segrate road and MTB rides. How basic does it get? And you want my money!

  • I would like to post a formal feature request.  I ride bike patrol and I would like to tag the rides that are at a different pace.

  • I wanted a separate tag for when I patrolled. I set up a separate bike instead and that worked for me...

  • I'd also like to see the ability to create custom tags - but for all activities. For example, I'd love to add custom tags for running so I can note which runs are with my dog, which ones I don't use headphones, which ones I feel that nagging pain in my left ankle, etc.

  • I'd like the following tags: intervals, trainer (as in - I am running/riding with someone else to train them). I am sure everyone will have there own ideas. make it customisable!

  • Custom Tags would actually be really great. Some of the examples for runs are "Easy run", "Hills", "Fartlek", "Mile Repeats", "5 k Race" "Marathon", etc. Also the ability to sort by tags would be really nice. Why isn't this a feature already? The Strava app is lacking features. It should not take this long for features to come out. I saw posts on this since around 2013. I really want to renew my subscription, but I don't think it is worth is at the moment.

  • Strava...it seems like the literal least you could do and still be decent is comment and tell us this isnt going to happen. It would be astoundingly easy to implement and very useful yet you cant even take the time to tell us Yes or No. Be better.

  • I'm with Jessica - I want to be able to tag the walks I do with my dogs so I can track how many kilometres of exercise they are getting each week.

  • I think this would be a really cool feature and put Strava ahead of Garmin Connect, endomondo etc. which all do not offer this.

  • Just checked Endomondo does offer this... You can tag workouts there and filter your work-out list using tags...

  • Custom run tags would be great. Or, at least add "Trail Run" as a tag.

  • As a new user I am instantly confused by the tags & ride type - the options are irrelevant. "commute" or "indoor" - no neither.
Ride Type "Race" or "Workout" - no neither, just casual for fun.

  • Hi Everyone,

Thanks for leaving your comments. It makes total sense to be able to tag rides differently. Do you all want the ability to tag rides for review later, to search/find activities with specific tags easier, another reason?

This isn't to replace your request, but have you thought about titling your ride with a specific keyword so you can search for it later in your Activities Search? You can find your activities on the web: Training > My Activities

    Cheers.

  • for me it would be all of the above. just a way to tag rides for any reason. An easy way might just be a 'tags' field that lets me hashtag things they way people already do in social media. Then provide a filtering mechanism that lets me filter my feed by any search criteria, including hashtags. That would add the feature in a way that is flexible enough for all the comments on this thread and do it in a way that is light on development and QA hours. :-)

  • I'd like to be able to use tags to filter my training log. For instance, I want to see how far I walked the dogs each week (filter by custom tag "dog"), or how far I walked or cycled with the kids (filter by custom tag "kids") or how far I walked or cycled when doing functional activities like shopping (filter by custom tag "shopping"). How many kilometres did I do last year walking to the shops? Walking the kids to school? No idea. But I'd like to know.

  • Whenever I add a ride, the page shows two tags which I cannot change. The tags read: "indoor cycling", and "commute".

This would be fine if I worked from home, but with my miles that I actually ride, it would be about a zillion loops around kitchen and the living room.

I can find no way to edit these tags anywhere...Please help!

  • It's bizarre that this was brought up nearly 3 years ago yet we are still having the same problem; only Commute and Indoor Cycling can be selected or not for a ride. Who creates a feature like this and then abandons it?

  • Just add it to the long list of 1/2 working features that never get fixed or improved. Although Strava is a great service it wallows in lethargy from the developers. We all await the day someone can buy them out, or jump to a competing service.

  • It’s why I stopped paying for their service. I know of few other applications that have gone so long without a major feature update. Their investors are in profit taking maintenance mode. I’m willing to bet they’ve cut dev staff over the past 2 years. It’s a dead app that is coasting.

  • Road, Gravel and MTB are really different. For example, road challenge is globally focus on rider average power. MTB challenge is more about track status, technical skill and a bit rider power max. Gravel somewhere between. I think you cant offer the same service to road rider and MTB rider with a simple tag... But this is a good idea to filter cycling segments.

  • Does this feature really not exist yet??

  • Sadly no. And as Strava product manager continue to ignore all MTB requests, only roadies will continue to pay for it. All MTB riders I know stopped to pay for "Premium roadie features". And I will too. And TrailFork, Garmin & co will soon replace this :)

  • Really want MTB option. Come on Strava. Can't be impossible. Can't be cost prohibitive. What's up?

  • I’m a roadie and I bailed on them once it became clear they are just farming this outdated app for revenue without ever adding any real functionality. Swimmers are getting new features but cyclists haven’t had a substantial new feature in years.
