Strava Beacon Feature with Apple Watch

The beacon feature is fantastic when used properly.  Not only is it a way to share your position with someone, which helps for safety, and for communicating where you are (in real-time).  I rode downtown two weeks ago in the dark--I easily communicated my location as I was meeting a group.

My feedback is two-fold.  First, it is dark when I commute to and from work now.  I launch the Strava app to record my trips, and I strongly want the beacon feature to automatically send the text to my wife.  I don't want to dig for my phone when it is cold outside.

Second, if the feature is not made automatic, make a control on the apple watch to send the beacon text.  I want to control this feature from my watch (if the text does not automatically go out when I start each cycling adventure).

Otherwise, I love the Strava product, and really enjoy keeping track of my efforts each week!

  • I’ve been whining and complaining since I got my Apple Watch. The watch and phone are completely disconnected in Strava. In Map my Ride they have a feature called Live Tracking, similar to Beacon. Except starting a ride on your watch sends a Tracking notification to selected parties. EVEN if the app is not running on the phone.

I like the Strava watch app better for riding my bike, but hate the fact that you cannot start the Beacon feature on the watch and know that all is good! So I use both apps, Strava on the Watch and MMR on the phone. Best I can do!!

  • Given that the Apple Watch series 3 has cellular, Elle's answer needs to be updated.  Also even if you carry your phone, you don't have the ability to send a beacon from it if you started the ride on your watch (unless I am missing something).  I have canceled my Summit Sub due to this, and I think I will try Brian's solution of MMR on my phone + Strava on my Watch.  Still I only carry my phone with me when I am MTB.  I prefer the Apple Watch to Garmin (which I tried for a couple of weeks before sending it back), so I will change apps before I would change watches.

  • @chubbykitty can you and your family not use find friends if you all have iPhone or iOS devices? It's free and works great on apple watch cellular

  • I just started to pay for Summit and to be honest: I am disappointed and getting more and more frustrated: one of the adverstised features is Beacon - which has been one of the reason for me to go for Summit. Now I have to realize that Beacon does not works when using the Apple iWatch Strava app but only when I start to track through my iPhone - noting that the Strava App on the iPhone and the iWatch are not sync/connected. But for heart rate logging you required the iWatch. iWatch with cellular should not be the prerequisite for using Beacon meaningful as it is very limited in most regions as it is linked to a sinlge provider.

This concept is not coherent - it is worse: because nobody tells you in advance that these "holes" exist it let you invest in your equipement and software relying that Strava has thought through their solution and then realize that they did not.

Reading through this community here confirm in addition that they are either not willing or not capable to improve. Instead they prefer acting as gold diggers with the summit features.

  • If I am to carry a phone with me, I can use facebook messenger (as one example) to share my continues location with as many folks as required without the need to pay for the strava subscription.

  • The watch and app need to communicate. Like others, I bought Strava for the Beacon and the watch for heart rate. It's ridiculous you can't do both at the same time. Take a sprint and implement this feature. I'm OK. With starting it from my phone or watch. It's a pain and a huge selling point. Like me, a lot of users feel like they paid for a broken feature which leaves a bad taste in the mouth. I love the app, but this is the reason to pay for it. Please head or warnings before someone fixes this and we all go there.

  • Strava please listen to your customers and allow the beacon to be sent from your phone when an activity is started on the Apple Watch!
How about when starting an activity on the iPhone the information is displayed on the Apple Watch and the heart rate monitor works!? Thanks

  • Everyone, I still wish Strava would pursue this feature of adding the beacon feature into the Apple Watch—especially the cellular watch.

However, if something happens, I need my phone with me, and my wife (or anyone else I share my location with) can just use the “find my friend” feature to come pick me up. Using this feature has nothing to do weigh Strava or my now broken Garmin watch. For those of you with Apple phones, this is the work around to beacon and it works quite well.

So much time has passed that Strava and Apple need to make a much more innovative feature. I feel the need for beacon connectivity has passed for Apple Watch + Strava. People have either bought Garmin, or expect much more from their newer Apple Watches.

  • Adding my support for Beacon working with Apple Watch. Totally fine if it requires phone nearby.

  • I have cancelled my Strava premium and won’t be back until beacon works on the watch or I can use the watch as a HR monitor with the phone app

  • I will reconsider Beacon when I can use it with my Apple Watch 4. Not until then.

  • Just bought an Apple Watch 4 with cellular and signed up for Strava Premium so I could leave my iPhone at home and my wife could track my rides with Beacon. Hmmm...wish I had read all these threads before I got so excited! I’ll be canceling my Strava Premium subscription and just use Find Friends with my watch.

  • I am also adding my support for Beacon working with Apple Watch. It's totally fine if it requires the phone to be nearby.
