Raceshape Tools

Can someone confirm that Raceshape is deactivated/no longer functioning? In particular, I found the SNAP tool very useful for segments with just enough bad GPS data not to register on the ride. It wasn't particularly good for wildly off GPS, but it was still a good tool for smaller errors. For example, a segment that is close enough that it registers with "ridewithgps" but not with Strava.

I assume we're now at the whims of our GPS devices? That's fine, but I was just hoping to get confirmation. Thanks.

RaceShape is a Strava domain, but the site is not currently under development nor has it been maintained. We have no plans to fix the errors at this time unfortunately.

  • I had the same question. I know SNAP had been available/working up until fairly recently but when I went to use it a few days ago the link wouldn't open. If it has finally disappeared it's a shame.

  • I remember a while ago, it was down, then it was back up for a bit.  But again just recently I have tried, and it is down again.  You know, I wouldn't really mind, as Strava supposedly will help correct bad GPS track data, but I submitted a support ticket yesterday, and got back a form letter in response.  Still not fixed.  If RaceShape was up and running, I could have fixed the problem myself in 2 minutes.  Now I'm still waiting for support...Please READ what the user is asking Strava!

  • I thought that website had nothing officially to do with strava, I doubt strava would take the time to try and shut it down, more believable is the person that was running it has forgotten to maintain it in some way or forgotten about it. I really enjoyed using it's features too.

  • So, I did a whois lookup on raceshape.com, and guess what... the domain is registered to Strava!

    https://www.whois.com/whois/raceshape.com

I've messaged Strava support to see if they can clear this up, but not heard back.

  • The guy who made Raceshape started to work for Strava in 2012: https://www.linkedin.com/in/paulmach/

That's why some of the previous Raceshape tools (such as the compare tool) are now part of Strava.

But since 2016 he's not in Strava any more...

  • So the last time I snapped something was in July, and the site was up then. Unfortunately it seems to be down at the moment again. I do not raceshape/snap that often and if so, its usually because of a particularly important ride.

In this case I was going for a personal best on the biggest climb in my area (Blackforest) the Kandel. Unfortunately Garmin 520 lost the GPS connection during the ride. I only found that out after the run.

Actually I beat my personal record by almost 1 minute (and had the fastest time on the climb in 5 years) so the lost connection is very disappointing. In an article they said that they might correct a lost track, and in this case its only the middle section, so it should be rather easy to confirm.

I already sent a support ticket. If they will not react I definitely consider to cancel my premium account.

  • I'm gutted - did a 90 kilometre segment and "you deviated from the path at 15%"

No I bloody didn't!   The GPS wigged out for a moment or so, being on the backside of a mountain can do that.

SNAP would have fixed it right up and I'd would be happy.    Noone would be disadvantaged.

Check the domain whois record for raceshape.com and its owned by "Mark Gainey, of Strava" so they went out of their way to acquire it!

    I am so ticked-off at Strava's emipre-building right now.

  • Criggie, our team can see if a force match of that segment is possible for you. Please reach out to us directly.

The creator of RaceShape worked for Strava for a few years, and yes we did acquire the domain. Many of the RaceShape features have already been incorporated directly into Strava.com just not the SNAP tool.

  • Dear Elle,

guess what I had the same problem with a personal best on our highest local climb (see above). I also had a short GPS breakdown in the middle of the 43min effort, but the beginning and end where on track.

I contacted support, but so far I got just a load of useless advice. The thing is. SNAP was there (at least sometimes) until this July, but now its not.

Its very simple. I cancelled my premium account, and might(!) only consider to prolong it, if this issue is resolved.

    Regards,

    Wilfried

  • SNAP was awesome.  Strava Labs claims to have something called Slide which looks similar, but consists of an interactive demo and some sourcecode.  Its not actually usable by mere mortals.

@elle yes thank you, the CSR team did manage to match my ride to the 90km segment, and it only took a couple of days turnaround which was good.    However SNAP would have let me do it without bothering the customer team.

  • Totally agree with Criggie. Would be great if raceshape, or something similar came back!

Thanks for all your effort at Strava. I see people complaining and threatening to cancel their premium support, but you are doing a great job and it is still my favorite website. If it aint on Strava....

  • I also found the raceshape SNAP tool very useful, when I did a big effort on a segment but when I got home, the GPS had lost it. Why doesn't Strava offer this tool? The SNAP tool was pretty straightforward to use. Are you there Strava....???

  • Yet another useful feature from a third party stomped into the ground by 'the almighty Strava'. You really do care about your community... not. How about giving some freedom to the riders and not having to wait three days for an answer from your support desk for a simple segment snap on.... or make Slide public? You are insufferable....

  • I don't think anyone from Strava reads this Belgian T.

  • I don't think anyone from Strava does any work any more. The company behaves like a ghost ship.
