Sync from Strava to Garmin Connect

I  can only seem to push from Garmin to Strava. What I want is to use the app to record runs when I have no Garmin device and push to Garmin Connect. Then I can have my data in both platforms. Is that possible?

In my Garmin Connect account settings I see that Strava can only read. Is that correct?

  • Maybe someone can help me out. Do you have to have strava premium to download files.  I do all my runs on a garmin 620 that then syncs to garmin connect and strava.  Lately Ive been doing a bunch of rides on the expresso bike at the Y that  automatically loads on to my strava.  I see everyone talking about downloading something from strava to move over to garmin but when i click on the wrench icon I do not get that as an option, only flag, make private and delete.  Do you have to have premium to download? Thanks in advance for any help.

  • I hope the title of this thread serves as a wake-up call to Strava HQ.

Not to create the the functionality..., but to ask WHY people now want this functionality.

If I have to explain further then all hope is gone...

  • +1 for this feature. I need it so that I can log my runs on Garmin Connect when so don't have a Garmin device to show Life Insurance company so as to get benefits, I.e. Prudential Vitality.

  • Having Strava sync to Garmin as well makes it the complete package.  Honestly, I am not sure what I am paying for with Strava as I don't use other premium features.  They got me on the auto renew for trial period.  I would actually want to pay though it it had better sync functionality with Garmin.

Use case yesterday.  I wore my Garmin watch on a Peloton.  Strava connected with Peloton, and Garmin also recorded the activity, but now I have two activities on Strava, one from Peloton, one from Garmin.  I want Strava to connect directly as it captures more information that my Garmin will for an indoor bike ride.  I want my Garmin to be the source of truth for all activities (sorry Strava) and that would work if Strava would push to Garmin.  Doing manual exports and updating activities seems pretty primitive in our day of technology.

Thanks for listening Strava, I am looking forward to my first year of paid membership!

  • Based on this inertia on the part of Strava I think I'll be ditching my premium membership...

  • So I just used the thing that Elle Anderson suggested. It worked. Not very good, but probably because of first time sync - it had to load tons of data for all activities past years and maybe that's why. Will try not to forget make an update once tried for single activity.

Has anyone tried syncing from Strava to Garmin Connect using https://tapiriik.com? "

Can't understand why some 3rd party can do what people request and officials just give some unrelated crap as an answer.

  • I used RunGap app to do this for a while, but have since ditched Strava as I no longer see the value in this annoying procedure.

  • While this indeed would be a great feature, don't you think the resistance is coming from Garmin?  They're in the business of selling devices. If you do this, use your phone with Strava to track and record activities, what need do you then have for a Garmin device? It really wouldn't make good business sense for Garmin to allow all these other platforms to push data to their site as it does nothing for their business intent.

I want this feature for convenience, which is how I came across this thread in my search for how to do it. The more and more I read and thought about it, it dawned on me that this simply isn't in the best interest of Garmin. I may never wear my Garmin watch again once I had this feature as I usually take my phone for music/podcast and simply record with Strava. However, I have many years of data stored to Garmin Connect and would love to keep compiling all the data in one location.

  • Richard, I think you are missing the point of this requirement. Most of us already have Garmin devices and use those for training. The issue here is that because we already use Garmin Connect, it is useful to have all the workouts in Garmin Connect irrespective of source. Im my case (and I can't speak for everyone), I need to sync my trainer workouts (non-garmin) with my garmin account. Whether you use Zwift or Bkool or most other trainer software, these do not sync with Garmin (and if they do, only from and not to Garmin) but all sync with Strava. So this requested function merely would enable the pushing of other, non-garmin workouts to Garmin through the Strava sync process already available. I don't see non-Garmin users needing this, but we (Garmin-users) do need this. So it makes good business sense for Garmin to do this as I (a Garmin user) will remain using Garmin Connect to track ALL activities and not just the Germin ones. If this is not done, then I pretty much only need Strava. In my case, I do however need Germin Connect as my Medical Aid syncs with my Garmin profile to track my fitness to award me tangible benefits.

I agree that the challange may be on the Germin side too, but hence the request to get the good people form Strava and Garmin to discuss this and action this request. Only they can do this, not us.

  • Richard, Raf summed up the need for syncing nicely.

In regards to Garmins interests in your post i respectfully disagree. Imho it would be great business for Garmin to allow this. First of all making existing customers happy. Also it would make great business sense to allow people that doesn´t own a garmin product to have an account as well.  This because of the functionality of the app/site requires a garmin device if you are to take full advantage of the features. Bringing people into the Garmin eco-system would be a very good business move imo.

That said. I found a great IOS app for pushing activities across all popular apps. It´s called RunGap. Only tested it for a day, but does the job it seems. It pushes to and from the most popular apps on the market. It´s unfortunately not free, but worth it imo. Check it out!

  • Honestly, the issue has to be control over the data.  Garmin has the devices, and is able to populate Strava's feed. But, with mobile devices becoming "so good" I'm sure Garmin has a fear that if they allow Strava to populate it's connect service it may negate some of the "need" for the Garmin devices. Regardless, the customer has clearly spoken, get it done Garmin/Strava.   (both at fault)

  • This request is insane and is NEVER going to happen!

Yes, I can appreciate why people want it, but the very idea ruins the business model of both Strava and Garmin, who are direct competitors in the same space.  This fact seems to be completely lost to everybody here!

    To spell it out further:

    1) If Strava sync'd it's data back to Garmin then Garmin would, in effect, be Strava.  Oh wait, but, then..., why look at Strava?!  Especially when Gamin analytics are improving, etc. So a negative for Strava.

    2) If Garmin allowed backwards sync from Strava with data that wasn't collected on Garmin devices (but say on iPhones, etc), then there would no longer be a need to have a Gamin device.  Hmmm, now what is Gamin's business model?  Can anybody remember?  Oh yes, I remember now, selling GPS devices!!! So a negative for Garmin.

So, the final score:  Garmin -1, Strava -1.

Wake up and smell the coffee people.

  • No I don't buy that. They are not on direct competition

Garmin already promote a Strava partnership by offering a sync option, one of only a handful of  companies that garmin are willing to partner with.

All that people are asking is that the sync works 100% rather than 50%

This very long thread has already highlighted loads of reasons why people would like two way sync, with many valid reasons that wouldn't take any business away from either company.

  • And, for what it is worth, some data is coming over from Strava, because my Strava segments are showing up in my dashboard.

  • It would be very useful to me too to have 2 way data transfer to Garmin Connect. Disappointed that it can’t and will have to look at alternative options given how long this thread is with no prospect of a fix 🙁

  • Simply unacceptable behavior. Given the 3rd party apps that can accomplish this, we know it's not rocket science.

While Strava and Garmin have some overlap, I don't view them as direct competitors. I think it would benefit then to play nice together. Here's how I use these applications, plus a 3rd:

    1) Strava - social media platform for aerobic fitness activities, some analysis of data

    2) Garmin - provides the hardware for most of my activity tracking; Garmin Connect acts as a bridge to Training Peaks

    3) Training Peaks - planning and analysis number crunching

Here's an example where the lack of this feature really frustrates me. A couple times a week I run to/from the pool. Since I need the Garmin for swim tracking in the middle of this workout, I use my phone to track the running. Swim syncs from Garmin Connect to Strava perfectly, but the run does not sync from Strava to Garmin Connect. If I manually sync, it misses the "moving time" and thus can't classify the activity as running since it's too slow.

This is simply ridiculous. Keep this up and another application will come along and obsolete one or both...

Yet another upset premium Strava user.

  • Same issue here!

I’m using Garmin Fenix 3 and Apple Watch for my training
I’d love to sync my data from Strava to Garmin connect! Both ways!

  • This is an issue for me when I ride my peloton which syncs automatically with Strava.  I want strava then to automatically sync the ride with my Garmin Connect.

  • Not syncing from Strava to Garmin Connect is TOTAL BS, pardon my French. This is basic functionality. I have a Peloton and I push my workout data to Strava. I use Garmin Connect (NOT STRAVA) to look at my "day" of activities, sleep, steps, etc. Strava is just for cycling data because Peloton pushes to there. Fix this! I won't pay for Premium until you do.

  • Just use Tapirik,  It will sync Strava to Garmin, no issue.  Sometimes better to use workaround than to get worked up trying to be most efficient
