Filter Segment Leaderboard by bike type

This would allow segments to be filtered to view only results by bike type, thus separating mountain bike versus road bike segments results.

  • Filtering by gender makes sense, as Strava awards both KOM and QOM.

  • Filter by bike type - yes please. I ride a recumbent, sometimes with a front fairing for even more aero performance. Strava currently showcases the bike, but is unfair to compare the performance with a road bike. An aero/time-trial category would be a start.

  • While on the aero theme, what makes a massive difference is wind on a segment and bunch riding versus solo, but cannot see easy way to deal with that.

Anyway, filter by bike type with some basic categories (incl. recumbent, please) would be a start. Filter by gender also a good idea.

  • Ah, yes. See that filter by gender is there already.

  • +1 for differentiating segment types. When I'm looking for new segments for my road bike, those segments up along the hiking trails are as useless to me as the running segments. Back before many of the the mountain-bikers infected joined Strava, this wasn't a problem. But now, when I go to the "Explore" section, over half of the segments found are on dirt trails.

  • Jasper, I think you're confusing "segments" with "efforts". A "segment" is the actual course; just a string of GPS coordinates which you follow. An "effort" is an actual ride that takes place along a segment. As such, I don't see how a segment could be designated for just recumbent (unless it went under really low bridges). A particular effort might have been done with a recumbent, or with/without faring, but segments will generally break down into either "road" or "trail" types.

Also, regarding your concern about group-vs-solo riding, there already is a (hotly-debated, I should add) thread about marking efforts as group/solo and maintaining separate leaderboards  for those who didn't have the advantage of drafting (https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/21098972-Designate-between-a-Group-and-a-Solo-ride-on-Strava)

  • Joe, yes, I should have been more careful with my words. What is needed is to be able to filter the leaderboard for a segment by bike type used etc. as per the main thrust of this thread. Marking segments as being more suited to specific bike types is kind of a separate discussion.

  • Yeah, would be really good to be able to see how you match up to other cyclists on same bike type. I ride fixed and have to compare myself to geared bikes. Which is cool but I will never bear a good road cyclist over a long distance, so getting a fixed gear KOM for a segment would be great, or an overall KOM if your quicker than anyone.

  • I feel this would be a logistical nightmare.  I guess as a simple filter it's ok, but not separate leaderboards for each.  Next thing you know they'll have to filter by older road bike vs new carbon bike.  And full suspension vs hardtail.  And wind vs no wind.  And group ride vs no group ride.  Then by temperature outside.  The possibilities for people to get picky are endless.  There is a lot of so cooler stuff Strava could be doing vs working on a request like this.

  • It seems like the comments have strayed a bit from what I thought was the original intent of this request.  This is a really simple thing Strava could do and would NOT be a "logistical nightmare" in any way.  All I want is an extra column in the leaderboard display that lists the bike used on that ride.  Strava already provides a field for "bike" and I use that field to differentiate between rides on my rigid singlespeed vs my geared full-suspension.  Leave the leaderboards alone, so that KOM's and aren't dependent on equipment or anything else.  I just want to easily see which bike I was riding on a given ride, from the leaderboard display.  Easy peasy, right?  Does Strava read any of these posts?  I've been watching this one for a year!

  • I think things have strayed as well.  When I first commented on this string, I was talking about exploring new and different segments in my area.   Because I live in the mountains (NC), many of the segments that looked like good rides turned out to be only doable on a mountain bike.  This ranges from trails and paths to gravel roads.  Clearly, I can’t ride my rode bike on the trails and I wouldn’t ride down a gravel road on my skinny tires.  I was simply asking to differentiate the segments so we could identify routes that are suitable for different kinds of bikes.

  • Sure, as a filter like the current Age Group and Weight Class filter I think that would be easy enough and I really don't see why they don't do it.

The logistical nightmare I was referencing was when people started talking about separate KOMs and leaderboards, and going as granular as what gear you ran fixed, bla bla bla.  That would be a nightmare to develop around and there would be no end to the granularity of it, I've already seen mention of headwinds and tailwinds, to me that's silly.

A KOM should be a pie in the sky awesome thing, not something that everyone deserves just because you make a choice to do something a little differently.  In the area of the country i live in I'm often ranked in the top 1000 (ONE THOUSAND) on some popular routes.  Big deal, use Strava to better you own times and it's extra nice if you pick up a KOM.

    That said, filter by bike.

  • I would like to filter bike types on a segment leader board so I can compare times to other users only on a Cyclo Cross for example. Would also be good to have a little icon next to each person to Identify the bike they were ride. Perhaps a letter code would be suffice i.e.  R=Road Bike, XC=Cross Country Mountain Bike, CX=Cyclocross, DH=Downhill bike, U=Unicycle, T=Track Bike, SS=Single Speed,

  • +1 I'd like to use strava for my velomobile without being accused of being 'unfair', which is nonsense of course.

  • No i think it should just be 2 different types... Mountain: (off road bikes) and Road: (asphalt sidewalks bike path bikes) so we have a segment side solely for offroad and a segment side solely for road. would be a ton less confusing. if anyone wants to complain on that then they need to design their own website and see how much renting memory or buying memory costs.

  • This thread is for discussing the possibility of filtering results based on bike type, like we have now with filtering, rider weight, gender and so on. I you want to discuss having specific segment types based on bike types or whatever else it would probably be a good idea to start a seperate thread for that subject as it has nothing to do with filtering the result list on segments.

  • I think it would be great to label which segments are for the MTB, but I would also love being able to sort my "trainings" per on my MTB bike (or MTB as new activity)

  • Most of the comments on this are rubbish. I regularly blast gravel climbs on my CX bike with slicks, which leaderboard should those rides go on? If I can get a pair of 700C tyres up a dirt climb with 20% sections I deserve my crown regardless of the shape of my handlebars. Seriously, if I ride home on my XC bike and head along a bitumen segment does that deserve a new leader board? Can I have a separate leaderboard on DH tracks for my steel 29'er all-mountain hardtail? Can I get a crown for carrying my cross bike up an XC switchback climb? The can of worms is bottomless and pointless. If you can't beat the roadies on your MTB, you are riding the wrong bike or the wrong trail.

That being said, being able to mark segments as sealed or unsealed would rock my world.

  • I've followed this thread for a while and it can be split into 3 separate requests

    1. Marking segments as off / on road so they can be filtered on maps and in segment explorer
    2. Marking segment results by bike type so that we can have separate leaderboards by bike type in the same way as we have male / female, age and weight.
    3. Filtering personal results by bike ridden so if you ride more than one bike you can see how you went on each.

I agree with 1 & 3 but not with 2. Bike type is subjective and there are too many possible combinations, if you want to win a KOM get the right tool for the job. Filtering off-road segments or displaying them in a different colour would help planning new routes. Unfortunately it would be difficult to retrofit onto the thousands of segments already out there but we could start with a "road", "off-road" and "ungraded" for all the rest. Filtering personal results would be a very simple change to the My results page and useful to those of us who regularly ride the same routes on different bikes.

Having said that, this thread has been running for more than a year now I've not seen any evidence that Strava is listening.

  • Filtering results on a segment doesnt magically create a new leaderboard, it just shows how you did against others of similar type, it's exactly how it is now, just adding more filtering options.

And yes, the thread is old as hell, it would probably take a developer an hour to code the added filtering option, so I guess it's never going to happen.

  • I can see why there is alot of cofussion in this thread. The headline talks about filtering segments while the description talks about filtering the leaderboard. At the moment there are 4 types of bike you can create in your profile. These are Road, Mountain, Cross (guessing thats like cyclocross) and TT (Time Trial). With every cycling activity being associated with obe of the 4 bikes i would imagine it wouldn't be to difficult to implement a filter for the leader board. (more than the 4 bike types disscusion is in another thread) As for segments, I don't believe a filter by bike type is needed but rather a simple indication if the segment contains any off road use. This would need to be a user edited function that would only require a tick of a box. With so many existing segments i wouldnt trust the original authors to apply the tick so ideally a user of the segment could apply a tick and another user could second it. Once segments are identified with off road use. They could then automatically have the letters OR in the start of the title or something similar to identify the segment as containg Off Road use. A filter in the segment explorer would also be very handy.

  • today i used strava for the first time in conjunction with MMR, and the first thing that stood or to me was that i couldn't set my bike on strava. i ride a fixed gear/track bike, so i hate that my calories burned and my times for segments are compared to those using geared road bikes. it was kind of disheartening to finish my ride and instead of feeling good at how fast i did on a segment, i got to read how i was somewhere in the 800 ranking because i can't hit 30mph on my bike.

please allow user to define the type of bike they are using on their rides and filter the results accordingly. until them i will continue to track my rides on MMR.

  • You can set your bike on Strava, not on the mobile app, but you can set it on the website.

Are your calories on a fixie that different from a geared bike?  I rode both for several years and never noticed that much of a difference.

This request is just for additional filters and it doesn't seem like Strava will ever take the 30min needed to set up those additional filters.  You'll still see those 800 people ahead of you on the full leaderboard.  I wouldn't base my happiness on how I did on a segment according to where I stand in the leaderboards, I'd be awful disappointed if I did.  If your happiness is based on that, then ride a geared bike and make no more excuses.  A fair number of my PRs are still held from my rides on a fixie.  The "fairness" can go both ways.

I tried MMR and didn't like it all.

  • MTB, Road, and Cross should all be distinct activity types with common app features.

  • Please add at least MTB, Road filter. I never ride MTB and it would be alot easier to see the road segements I'm interested in with such a filter available. Shouldn't be too hard to go in and status the segments I've created as either road or off-road.
