This would allow segments to be filtered to view only results by bike type, thus separating mountain bike versus road bike segments results.

  • I think this would be a nice feature, but really though, what does it matter?  For the MTB segments, chances are that a road rider won't be on the trails on a $10k frame and wheels stealing all the segments, and vice versa.  I mean if you really want a segment that bad, it doesn't really matter what kind of a bike you ride does it?  A bike is a bike, have fun with it.

  • For me it is about being able to discriminate between a MTB on a MTB track and a cyclist on a road segment. Here in the Netherlands the (artificial) single tracks are located close to the normal cycle paths and a lot a cyclist end up being mapped onto the MTB single track (example: http://www.strava.com/segments/6075054). This way you cannot compare your results with people actually driving the same track.

  • I've repeated my reasons every few months for a couple years now, but still no response from Strava or implementation of this simple request.  All I want to be able to do is to filter MY OWN RESULTS based on what bike I was riding at the time.  I ride a rigid single speed 29er and a geared full suspension 26er on the same trails.  These are not apples to apples comparisons, so I would like to see how my SS times are improving without having all my other times showing up.  On some local segments, I have ridden them over 100 times and have some great data stored that I have no way to use.

  • Ken's paragraph sums up my exact reason for wanting this as well.  I'm not worried about filtering the leaderboard by mountain bike vs. road. vs. etc (although it'd be nice).  I'd really like to see my own results filtered by what bike I was riding.  Or even if they're not filtered, have the bike I rode listed on my leaderboard so I can see it just by looking.

  • What I don't get is why they have a Alpine ski, backcountry ski, Nordic ski and snowshoe types, but they can't give at least 2 options for biking?!?! WTF? I live in Tahoe and participate in all four winter activities. Only two, Nordic ski and alpine ski make any sense since when doing these activities you are on some sort of trail, whether a groomed xc ski trail or a ski run. It is pretty much impossible to backcountry ski or snowshoe on the same path every time since these two activities do not involve a trail. By definition backcountry ski is off trail skiing and you almost never go the same route twice since the landscape changes after every fresh snow. Snowshoeing is similar unless your snowshoeing on a groomed xc trails which people do, but they are not supposed to since it ruins the grooms for xc skiers and is just dumb in general. It's like riding a 3k fat bike only on dry hard pack fire trails, completely unnecessary. Seriously strava, I thought this app was primarily for runners and bikers. Why are you pandering to obscure activities that you can't even use the app for? Really, kitesurfing and windsurfing. Now tell me how the hell your supposed to do these activities on the same exact line more than once? Ludicrous!

  • The biggest problem with Strava is that Cycle includes all genres.  At the very least road and mountain should be separated.  This issue has always come up with everyone I have talked to about Strava.

  • Hi Strava

this request was made two years ago. Many users have fairly support it. your competitor websites have this feature but after 2 years it is still not implemented ?

Can you please explain to your user community what your intention is.

Thank you. We all look forward to this functionality.

  • A year later and still riding one of two mountain bikes on mixed surfaces and missing out on some valuable data that Strava already has in their database. As mentioned it would be nice to add a filter group on the segment page to choose which one of your bikes was used on a ride/segment to compare what was optimal. Also, although there's a few road segments where I can come somewhat close to better than average road bike times, on general mixed surface riding it would be great to have leaderboards to see how you're stacking up and improving compared to people on the same bike types. This is still my number one complaint about Strava and some feedback and new features would have been much more appreciated than the recent redesign effort to overhaul ride pages and move stuff around.

  • I upload my rides from a GARMIN EDGE to Strava. I also have  a Garmin Vivofit so I'm pretty big with Garmin. There are many more like me.
Garmin have their own "strava" so I think the owners of Strava need to up their game to hold onto their customers.

People have been asking for this split between Road and Mountain bikes for some time now. I don't imagine this is much to change for Strava.

Strange how we never see Strava comments on here?

  • Sim!

  • Yes! I also had this idea.

Have to have this "filter" MTB and Speed, so the comparisons are more ... shall we say, balanced.

Since Speed's have better performance in speed, for example, and it is unfair to compare their data with the MTB's.

    (I used "Google Translate")

  • Travis responded to my email request within 24 hours and directed me to this features section of the zen desk. Elton Prytz and I ride together. Yesterday I was passed by road bikes that are much faster than our MTB's Yes, we can have 2 different bikes on our profile, but we get compared to roadies. That's like comparing a Formula 1 to a WRC rally car. Or a yacht to a BMX. AND YOU COLLECT MONEY FROM US FOR A GOOD SERVICE? ADD MTB AS A DIFFERENT SPORT TO RAOD.

  • This need to be a "must" for strava. Its a bit frustrating doing your best in a "road" segment with your mtb knowing u cant filter the overall leaderboard diferentiating the type of bike used.

  • I was looking for somewhere to suggest exactly this..... It's disheartening seeing people riding up hills at 18 mph :)

  • What is truly disheartening is this was proposed over two years ago and has wide support but nothing from Strava.

  • I would even be happy if they would just allow me to filter by my actual bike. That way I could start figuring out more easily which bike to ride on particular courses.

  • Come on Strava - we ride MTB or road, 2 different disciplines, very different!

  • I would support this for sure.  I often ride the same segments, but on a variety of different bikes.  My winter road bike has much harder gearing, and a good 2kg more weight than my summer racer, so I would be keen to filter my performances by bike used (not just type of bike road/mtb/fixed, but by which of my bikes I have used).

  • Yes please - I've not read the whole thread but I share Mike Duff's comment above (May 09, 2014 05:39 AM) and Drastique's comments of about a year back (May 27, 2013 11:39 PM):

//3".Filtering personal results by bike ridden so if you ride more than one bike you can see how you went on each"//

I'd like that too please - lots of bikes including tandems and it'd be nice to be able to separate my rides by bike.

  • Definitely need to separate road and mtb just like running and cycling are separated.  Its pretty obvious that the road guys do around double the miles of the dirt guys for a similar work out.  Not always the case though.  A few MTB guys I follow are doing road bike type miles.   Point is its very hard to know who was riding what and they are completely different. Especially when you look at year to date or all time miles ridden. It makes those numbers very hard to compare.

  • I agree at 1000% !!

and a specific challenge for MTB would be great too!

i only use Strava with my Cannondale MTB and i'm so sad that MTB are not even existing on Strava :-(

  • I would also like this, and then it could be used by Strava Clubs as well. There is no reason to show road rides in a mountain bike Strava Club, and vise-verse.

I am still perplexed by this filter request. If this filter is implemented, what is to stop me from blitzing a segment on my road bike and then claiming I was on my mountain bike?  Thus getting the mountain bike "KOM"?*

(*it would seem that getting the KOM by drafting in a group or behind a bus is okay, so there would be little shame in pretending I was on my other bike.)

Even between different mountain bikes there is a world of difference between each bike, so what would the filter tell you?  "yay, I'm the best rider on a full sus-bike with 27.5 inch 2.1 wheels and a carbon frame, yay!"  But wait..., should there be a 29" wheel filter?....

It's at best unworkable and at worst pointless.

  • This request is sort of a mishmash of a few different desires. Perhaps it should be retired and new requests built that more closely reflect the various desires.  Essentially, people want to be able to correlate their personal performance and others' self-reported performances based on the equipment they used.  Strava KOM is never going to be a certification, it is always going to be subject to various types of cheating, so it is essentially a good-faith number.  However, it would be VERY NICE to be able to filter segments based on mountain-bike or road-bike and it would be VERY NICE to be able to see if I'm faster on my full-suspension MTB or my hard-tail MTB or my road-bike or my TT-bike over the same segments.  Now that Strava has route builder, it would be even better if you could exclude MTB segments from the router (or include them if you're trying to build a MTB route, which is currently almost impossible with the existing tool.)  For people who ride recumbents, it would be nice for them to be able to exclude themselves from the mainstream leaderboards as well since recumbent bikes have a technological advantage on most roads.  Personally, I'd like to see Strava add a whole bunch more activity types (motorcycling, sailing, track-cycling, pack-riding, brevet, TT, team-TT, etc.) but I suspect they're trying to balance ease of use for the common situation with geeks who want to measure everything.
