  • Just trying Strava for the first time.  I like the app but given the age of this thread I'm not optimistic for change.  I would be willing to pay for premium, but only if recumbent trike and handcycle were included.  There are some very competitive wounded warriors, accident survivors, and others who cycle on these geometries not because they're eccentric, but because the upright geometries of the current bike choices simply isn't an option given their health history or physical conditions.

  • I would really appreciate both fixed gear and unicycle. Please can you suggest a time frame as to when this can be done as I have requested before in the past.

  • +1 from me. Would be great to view a leaderboard by bike type.

I may have just done my third best time on that segment but would be good to know if the two quicker times were on my full carbon geared bike, rather than my steel framed fixed gear.

  • It'd be great to see some form of this.  Would be especially useful to be able to filter leaderboards by bike types.  It'd even be cool just to be able to filter my own results on leaderboards by bike to compare my rides.

  • I'd love to see cargo bikes on there too, along with an increase of the max bike weight (currently only 25kg)! My bike, including my son, seat and baggage is easily 60kg+!

  • I predict this will never happen and velomobile riders will continuously get their rides flagged in 2014, annoying them further (and annoying the rest of the cycling community), but here goes with my request…. Please add 'Velomobile" as a new category! Thanks for your consideration.

  • So here we go again...  whilst riding I came up with a simple idea and was not sure if it had been raised here.

The idea would be to add a "custom" option to the list of bikes which would allow the end user to add one or more custom machines. Assuming that some eccentric cyclists have a number of weird and wonderful creations.

This custom bike could be persisted on the client device or on the strava hosted server db, I am not certain what would be best but I imagine if it were persisted on a client device it would be tied to the local machine and not shared between devices. For me, a custom bike would be best recorded once and accessed from many devices.

Linking the custom bike to a user would make sense so that it can be recalled again once logged in. Some front end work would be needed to add a custom bike type in a similar way one can record details about bike(s) in the user profile.

For me it is obvious that adding in a myriad of different bike types will not only complicate the management of the Strava App for end users but will make it difficult for the folks at Strava to maintain. I am sure they are watching this thread and hoping it dies away as the number of machines keeps on growing making the job of meeting the user's needs increasingly difficult. Ideas like filters and other ways of displaying the data to the user just increase app complexity and impact usability as filters have to be maintained by the user and persisted on the client device so they are not lost.

I therefore think a different approach is needed. However, the implementation of this could be tricky as I suspect an elegant solution would require some back-end work on the Strava side. However, I remain hopeful that this alternative approach is at least worth a little consideration as I believe it meets the needs of the customer request and keeps the Strava app elegant and usable. Keep up the good work guys!

This is my 2p for the day.

  • Agreed. This thread is from 2012. Seems Strava doesn't agree or care?

  • Will someone with a healthy cycling fraternity twitter account tweet this neglected thread @strava in an attempt to draw their attention to users needs and perhaps embarrass them into at least acknowledging us? It is so frustrating when an organisation provides a means to feedback and make feature requests but there appears to be no monitoring - as if simply letting people voice their opinion will keep them happy.  It's feeling listened to that makes people happy!

  • Yes please. I want to distinguish leaderboards between MTB and road bike. I appreciate there are many subsets in each category: MTB = 26, 29 or 27.5; gear or single speed; differrent freame types like X/C or downhill. Likewise roadies are road racers; tri-bikes; single speeds/fixies; then a hughe range of hybrids/commuter/tourer bikes, and a range of rim sizes.

For mine, lets be able to identify whether we did a segment on a roadie or a MTB as a starting point. If that works, then think about sub-categories.

  • I'd go even further. Why not give to users an option to "customize" bike? What I mean is to fill up a few blanks which will be:

    - Crr (rolling resistance)

    - Cda (frontal area basen on weight to height ratio)

And so on. It will greatly improve power approximations for those who need it. So far, I experience really big differences in calculated power when riding on the tarmac on MTB/road bike. And in fact they are not that big.

  • Being able to filter by bike type and style would be spectacular.

I vote for Unicycle being added too!

  • I'm a mountain unicyclist. It would be nice to have Mountain and Road unicycle categories at least. Tired of labeling my rides as "Bike" and being compared to bike riders. I would also like it if I could just assign specific activities to show up only on certain clubs. So I could go ride a bike too, and it wouldn't interfere with my unicycling clubs.

  • I got directed here by Strava Support from this thread: https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/26657284

I fully support this thread, but it's not really the same thing. Since Strava Support closed that thread, I guess I have to mention it here. ;)

In addition to Bike Types for our Gear, we also need more Ride Tags to differentiate the type of ride.

  • Track Bike.  Please!

Unicycle?  Beach Cruiser?  Yeah, uh, not so much.

  • @ Joe McGivern - How is track bike more deserving of a category than long distance uni touring or mountain unicycling? We're not talking about street performers and circus acts wanting to activate strava rides. I can understand no to beach cruiser, but I'm participating in a completely different sport, yet I have no category even remotely close. I prefer to ride one wheel on the mountain, and my statistics should not be compared to those on 2 wheels (aka training wheel).

  • I'd love to be able to add more tags  - e.g., "family" when my kids are riding so they can track their mileage, too, vs. my solo rides.  Tx!

  • Adding a "single speed" option would be terrific, and this could apply to either road or mountain.  Also, the ability to filter the leader boards by "single speed" would be even better.  Thanks Strava.

  • I'd LOVE to see velomobiles added. When I look at my current achievements, I see "0 km" every month because I am forced to set all my rides to "Workout". Pretty depressing.
