Create a Route and send to Strava Mobile App for navigation

Hi Strava, I'm not sure if this have previously been discussed but its a feature upgrade that personally I would find very helpful.

I've recently noticed that one of your competitors has the ability to create a route on their webpage on a PC and then send this route to the iPhone app. I can then ride the route using the map displayed with the route shown and my current position using the iPhone's GPS facility.

Quite often I plan a route before a ride but have to stop to check a map app. I know your app has the option of displaying the map and the route you have already ridden but have you considered/ is it possible for a predetermined route to be displayed?

Many thanks

  • Just made an account at Strave. I discovered the option of making your own route. Afterwards I noticed this feature is missing. Too bad!

@ Elle,  could you give any status update of your previous posts?

  • Bummer, instead of committing to Strava I have to go with MapMyRide because of the lack of app navigation based on a route.

  • I'd like to be able to pinch another riders ride and follow it turn by turn in app..

  • Hi guys,

You might want to try Mountain Goat app. It does the job pretty well, you have several options to import routes and has most of the strava features. And it`s free... Cheers!

  • Including the option to Importing gpx or kml would be a reason for me to stay with Strava

  • Forgive my ignorance, what is the point of the route editor if I can't create a route on my pc and then follow that route on my mobile device?

  • I now make the route at the strava website and import the route in Runtastic Road bike. Works flawless. Come on Strava, implement it!!!' And the current speed ofcourse. I want to use one app!

  • I believe it works now, its not turn by turn or anything, but you can view it, which is the most important. I just made a request that the map would rotate and center itself depending on the phones direction and location.

  • Have someone tried the RidewithGPS android app? I tried some months ago, bought a 3 day pass but could not navigate rightly. I think they are trying to develop some turn by turn navigation, but I don't think it is good enough, yet.

  • You're right, Sean, Strava have indeed implemented this long-awaited feature into the new app update, Version 4.1, which was installed on my iPhone yesterday!  Woohoo!  Thanks Strava! :o)

  • Great, the last version in Android has this feature too! Next weekend I will try it. Seems, as talked before, it is just a route printed on the map, but it sounds like a first step to get a turn by turn navigation. Thanks Strava!

  • Hi, do we know if strava will be adding turn by turn navigation, viewing a map with the route on it is great but it is either pretty hard to read while moving or you have to stop and check, turn by turn instructions would be great

  • one of the biggest disadvantages of the new routes feature is the missing audio guidance. picking the phone from your jersey's rear pocket ever 5-6 minutes is really annoying, especially when you're following a route never ridden before. am i missing something (audio options, etc.?) or am I just right?

  • For things on the road, turn-by-turn would be great, but i guess the same is a bit more difficult to achieve when riding singletracks. How should the strava app know when to give directions? each turn in the track or only at crossorads, etc. For me it would be much nicer to get a signal when i enter or exit a segment on a loaded route! :-)

  • Patrick, this is a general issue in smartphone GPS app. I stopped to use the great Oruxmaps app for this. Now I use the Viewranger to navigate and this issue is rare, but viewranger, in the way I use, is less flexible if you want change the route on the fly, because they will wait you pass close enough through each waypoints.
