Xbox-style achievements/milestones for notable Strava activity

I submitted this to the ticketing system (which is the starting point for formal feature requests). The response was appreciative but they said it was a direction they weren't looking to go right now. They suggested I post in the general forums to gauge interest. So that's what I'm doing here.

KOMs / segments are terrific, but it would be cool to implement xbox-like achievements and accrue "strava points" or something like that. This is separate from KOMs / segments and would be per-individual.

Examples:

  • "'Monthly 1,000' - Ride 1,000 miles (or km) in a month" (40 points)
  • "'Century' - Complete a ride of at least 100 miles." (25 points)
  • "'Polka Dot' - Complete a category 4 [or 3, 2, 1, HC] climb" (5 points)
  • "'Usurper' - Oust someone's KOM/QOM on a segment with at least 10 competitors" (5 points)
  • "'Wall Climber' - Complete a categorized climb with at least 13% grade" (10 points)
  • "'Eww, Roads' - Complete a ride with at least 1 segment without touching a road." (5 points)
  • "'Eww, Mud' - Complete a ride with at least 1 segment without going off road." (5 points)
  • "'Mile High Club' - Climb at least 5,280 feet on a ride." (10 points)
  • "'Time Trialer' - Average at least 20mph on a ride >10 [or whatever] miles." (10 points)
I think this would make Strava even more competitive and add a fun, new dynamic to its already competitive nature (and possibly make it even more addictive than it already is, if that's possible).

Thoughts?

  • I could see quite a bit of benefit in this getting more people to enjoy the achievements.  Personal record achievements are great, but having something else to strive for can always add some extra fun into the ride and mix it up a bit.

    Hopefully Strava considers this.

  • Hello all -

Thanks for your feedback.  While I can't give you any specifics or a timeline, we're currently putting a lot of work into our Premium offerings, and this will eventually include some pretty cool new functions around Goals AND Achievements.  This should be particularly interesting to those of you riding with power meters.  That's all for now... But be patient - like some of you have mentioned there are some things that by necessity are a higher priority - and hopefully you'll like what you see.

    Thanks!

    Mat

  • This is something the community could do as well.

One of our local riders set up this excellent script/site - Race Shape

Just copy it onto your bookmarks bar, then click on it while you're viewing a segment.

There is no reason why any other developer could not do what you are asking :)

  • Love this idea. It's a nice way to reward diversity of riding.

  • That sounds like a good idea.  You would want several progressively harder versions of the achievements to encourage people to keep improving.

  • This idea blows my mind in its geniosity and simplicity. Let's get strava to do this! KOMs and CRs are nice, but it's too hard to get them sometimes and I don't want to go on a specific ride just for a KOM. I'd like to go on any ride and say "you know what, I'll hit 30 mph and maintain it for 30 seconds on flat and get that achievment!".

  • Good to see that Strava staff (thanks Mat) have responded to this thread - there's some great ideas being talked about! There's a growing number of loyal Strava users here in the UK - and whilst I am enjoying the privilege of being a woman (easier to get on leader boards probably because there are just less female cyclists using Strava over here) - some of my male friends have given up using it, because its just too hard to achieve anything. I know that's not the point of cycling, but it *is* part of the fun of Strava. Maybe expanding the range of achievements could encourage more users to continue to push themselves?

  • I think an 'Everest' achievment for climbing 29,029 ft in a certain amount of time (2Weeks? Month?) would be cool.

  • Not sure what the point would be as everybody would very quickly get all the achievements they could and then that would be the end of it much like an XBox game.

    Pointless.

  • Wow - everyone likes the idea except Amos (troll) - so I guess there's no reason to add it.

  • So people aren't allowed an opinion now Tober?? Maybe you should look up the definition of troll before you use the word as it makes you look stupid when you use words out of context.

Surely there are better way to improve the site than pointless points for doing a pre-defined list achievements.  Isn't this the point of the challenges??  I suspect lots of people would agree its pointless given the fact only 55 people agree.

  • According to Wikipedia a Trol is “In Internet slang, a troll (pron.: /ˈtroʊl/, /ˈtrɒl/) is someone who posts inflammatory,[1] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as a forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response”.

Therefore who is the troll me or you as you have resorted to name calling?

  • It may only have 55 people agreeing, but it's the 2nd ranking suggestion behind "download rides" (with 80-some).

You may have static achievements but you may also have recurring (monthly, quarterly, or seasonal) achievements as well. Xbox limits points to 1000 points per game (more with DLC) - you don't have this limit with Strava necessarily.

  • You don't think it would be somewhat novel to have badges for doing certain things?

I think it would be in Strava's best interest to add additional "achievements" as it could be a part of a strategy to counteract diminished interest as a result of getting very few PRs/Achievements/Overalls on rides that you have done multiple times.

  • Hi All - just a reminder that this is an informal forum to discuss cool ideas for new Strava features. None of the forums topics here are currently planned or have any guarantee of existing on the site in the future. We love hearing your feedback, no matter what you think about some of these ideas. Thanks!

  • Davin, this is my point.  Once you get all the achievements you can based on acess to hills etc which people will do very quickly you will be exactly where you are now with nothing to aim for and the longer you use Strava before this gets implemented the harder it would be to get some of the suggested achievements as you won't be able to smash the KOM's in your area as you will either have them or they are out of your reach.

I think keeping people interested in Strava is very duifficult in the long run which is why hardly anybody pays for the service and this feature isn't going to make people subscribe so whats the milage in implementing it.

  • Philip, if you don't understand the incentive and fun produced by gamification, then nothing we say is going to convince you that it's a real phenomenon that causes increased interaction and helps sustain long-term interest.

Strava itself is an experiment in gamification, that's one of the primary drivers of interest in the product. It's not just a GPS tracking tool. This suggestion would extend the reward envelope a bit and create a secondary (more casual) set of feedback loops for users that find their pattern of use falls somewhat outside the original high intensity KoM/PR concept.

Honestly, I think this is a great suggestion and I think the Strava team would be seriously remiss not to implement it. If they can wrap the periodic Challenges functionality into the product as smoothly as they have, then a real Achievements function should be similarly workable. Think of it as Challenges without the need for a Join button.

  • It would be great to see acheivements like the one's you've suggested start appearing on Strava! I know it's been a while since this has been posted. Has the idea been shelved?

  • Yes! I think that 'achievements' would be an excellent addition to an already great core product. As one person commented, once the initial honeymoon period of KOM/PR results run out, the level of interest diminishes. Also, not everyone is capable of getting a top 10 on a segment, expanding the possible achievements would capture the heart and mind (and body!) of many more everyday athletes.

An observation on the (new) Premium features - I think there is too much development of Strava targetted at those with power meters. I wonder what percentage of riders have power meters? I'd guess it would be a very small percentage. Just saying...

  • @ Alex Dove - the idea hasn't been formally considered by the team - this is considered a "General Discussion" Forum that isn't officially moderated. Therefore it hasn't been shelved as it has never officially been under consideration. Given their recent feature releases, which are typically non-structural additions to the site, I could definitely see them releasing this, especially if the people stop using the site.

  • Had thought about something similar,

Taking part in Challenges like the Strava Mile Blast gives you points. I just earned my 200mile Achievement in the Strava Mile Blast. This could earn me more points.

  • I love this idea- particularly if you got a badge icon for each one. Make it a premium feature if you like!
