Add better support for Swim data to Strava

I am thinking about buying a Garmin Swim, but it is pretty useful if it cannot upload it's data to Strava. Is there a possibility that Garmin Swim will be supported?

edit: THANKS TO ALL THE SPORTERS REPLYING IN THE THREAD AND OF COURSE THE TEAM OF STRAVA!!! SWIM UPLOAD IS POSSIBLE FROM NOW ON!!!!

Strava Support edit: Although Strava currently accepts Swim data from Garmin devices, this forum can still be used to collect feedback on improvements we can make to allow swim data to be more useful and better displayed on Strava, for both swim metrics and swim activity data. Thanks for your feedback!

  • Thanks for all the feedback Strava swimmers! We unfortunately don't have any plans in the works. But each bit of feedback helps. This issues/topic is certainly on our radar!

  • Bummer, hoped to see a workaround for Swimming with just basic upload possibilities. Hope to see swim-support soon on Strava.

  • why are there no plans...you got running and riding already...swimming just makes sence for all the triathletes out there...it is even a booming sport...

  • Strava has a huge following among triathletes.  Consolidating all your triathlon training and race data in Strava just makes a lot of sense.  It would also increase user engagement, not to mention creating a long list of new cool features.

Would love to see swimming added!

  • Even if Strava doesn't have any plans to visualize the swim data, could we at least get the ability to upload our swim activities direct from the watch to add the swim yardage to our workout calendar?

  • Agree with Sam Stein, although real 100% visuability is maybe to much, it can't be hard to make a basic represantation of at least mileage and maybe laps.

  • Haven't read all these comments, but I manually load my swim workouts (just overall time and distance), and would at least like my swims (and xc ski, etc) to show up on my 'activity summary of the last 4 weeks' so I can keep track of weekly hours...

  • For Swim:

    1) export from garmin connect as TCX

    2) upload to strava

    3) change activity type to swim with the trainer box ticked

    4) change activity to normal swim, unticking the trainer box.

  • Please add Garmin Swim to the upload - we all need to see how we are doing v previous efforts - you need to get this done Strava or every triathlete is going to just use Garmin Connect - what is taking you so long to add this functionality?

  • Daniel Froelich: how do you export from Garmin Connect? I don't see an export option on my pool swims, I emailed Garmin support and they don't allow exports of pool swims. Also, Training Center doesn't import pool swims.

    I'm on a Mac with a 910xt, fwiw

  • Lot's of people swimming around. I upgraded already to a premium account, to give Strava the resources to build a Swim upload possibility.

  • Sam Stein - It looks like Garmin removed the option to export swim tracks. It was on the toolbar when you opened a workout in Garmin Connect: "Share, Export, Compare..."

It was intact for my last swim on Wednesday, but gone now.

  • Indeed, export swim data from Garmin Connect doesn't seem to be possible anymore. Why? Garmin probably sees too many triathletes starting to use STRAVA.

Has Garmin discouraged Strava to develop swim features? Any particular "agreement / clause"?

I have a Premium membership and I love what I've been getting so far. But I will question my renewal if no swim integration/upload is provided.

Please STRAVA team, think of your triathletes. They're your customers and prospects too.

  • I imagine Garmin was not happy with seeing all the data they produce being stripped down to the bare essentials by other sites. It would in turn make their products look less feature-packed to someone browsing other people's swim's on strava.

I tried changing the activity type on garmin connect to running to export, but it does not work.

Do you know if any files are being stored locally when you sync the watch to Garmin Connect? Also, is there any third party software that would replicate the Garmin Ant+ agent but would allow local intercept and store of those files.

It is simply ridiculous that I cannot have access to these files.

  • i asked garmin how i can get my swim activity files off of my 910xt since training center doesn't transfer them:

"Please note that Training Center is not compatible with the swim information. Training Center has been discontinued. It is recommended that you continue to use Garmin Connect for view your activities."

  • Hi Daniel - give this a try: https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId=%7B6e1aa610-6d25-11dc-6782-000000000000%7D

I don't know of any restrictions Garmin has placed on their swim data being used by third parties. The data formatting in the swim files created by Garmin is unique to swims - and for a program like Strava we would have to design features that pull out the important swim data from the file and display it. This would be different that what we currently have in place to process rides and runs. There is no definitive action yet planned to move forward with swim file compatibility but we still appreciate all the feedback. It helps!

  • Elle Anderson - Thank you!

I had always assumed it was in there somewhere!

So I guess the new import procedure for swims is:

1 - On strava: "Upload Activity" - "Upload a File"

2 - Navigate to the folder specified here: https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId=%7B6e1aa610-6d25-11dc-6782-000000000000%7D

    3) Change activity type to swim with the trainer box ticked

    4) Change activity to normal swim, unticking the trainer box.

I will not be able to try this for a couple days, but hopefully the "Change Activity Type" bug can be fixed to remove step 3.

  • I was thinking about a quick solution: I was thinking (although I have limited programming skills) about the possibility to do a quick upload:
Dont display any graphical stuff, but just the lap times in the lap section (which already exist for running and cycling) and the total time and distance.
In that way you make all the people happy responding to my thread, while you have the time to develop a nice Strava graphical representation.
    Please?! ;)

  • You may have noticed that garmin connect has just  removed the ability to export swim data tcx files.... this link on the garmin forum explains what to do..

    https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?32868-Can-t-Export-Swim-Workout

If you need to get the tcx export you should be able to by using the following URL. Replace #ACTIVITY_ID# with the ID of your activity.
    connect.garmin.com/proxy/activity-service-1.1/tcx/activity/#ACTIVITY_ID#?full=true

  • I also have just purchased a Garmin 910xt. did some fantastic indoor swim only to find I can't upload to Strava....pretty lame, especially when it has a "swim" option on the drop-down menu! Had to put the data on Garmin connect! Get it sorted Strava!!!!!!!

  • Hi Elie (From Strava) to say that you have no plans to add the ability to upload pool swims and data for a Garmin 910 XT is in my eyes an indication that Strava is sticking their heads in the sand.  There are literally thousands of multisport athletes out there that are looking for an app to track their workouts.  I just wish that I had not upgraded to premium before I read your totally lame response for a need from the people who use your app..  You can change my mind but right now I'm starting to lose my enthusiasm for Strava.  While you guys are looking at feedback a competitor is at work designing a new app that is going to kick your butt, and then I'm going to have to switch and that is a pain -  plus I have really have enjoyed strava

I know this comment is sharp but it is honest and I am not the only cyclist who cross trains that feels this way.

  • I think some attention needs to be turned also to Garmin for removing the ability to export swim data.  For Strava they need to actually do some work to enable swim data to be used, which they should do. However all Garmin have to do to get us all back on track is turn the feature back on, that they were quite happy to have 1 week ago.

Garmin forum is also receiving some serious backlash about this issue. Join in. The issue title is "
