Add better support for Swim data to Strava

I am thinking about buying a Garmin Swim, but it is pretty useful if it cannot upload it's data to Strava. Is there a possibility that Garmin Swim will be supported?

edit: THANKS TO ALL THE SPORTERS REPLYING IN THE THREAD AND OF COURSE THE TEAM OF STRAVA!!! SWIM UPLOAD IS POSSIBLE FROM NOW ON!!!!

Strava Support edit: Although Strava currently accepts Swim data from Garmin devices, this forum can still be used to collect feedback on improvements we can make to allow swim data to be more useful and better displayed on Strava, for both swim metrics and swim activity data. Thanks for your feedback!

  • Love Strava for logging my runs and cycles. I'd like to politely add my voice to these good people asking for an upload facility from Garmin Swim watches and the like.

  • Hi Elle,

I am a swimmer: new to Strava and returning to cycling after a lengthy break. It is amazing how all tracking applications ignore the swimmers. The market potential must be awesome for the first developer who really take swimming seriously and integrates swim metrics from devices like Garmin Swim®. I point out that Garmin is likely to be extending its .FIT file protocol to other its other devices so you'll need to do the porting regardless. To futureproof, I also suggest you check out FINIS's AquaPulse® Heart Rate Monitor (which requires data storage/upload to be useful) and Scosche's Rhythm® armband pulse rate monitor (which only requires waterproofing). I can't believe no-one has done it yet and the race must be on for the major players: Runkeeper, Digifit, yourselves etc. . . . . .  There's big bucks in Triathlon and swimming is the weakest discipline for most competitors. Cheers KJD

  • Hello All,

    1) We are obviously being ignored on our requests to add SWIM features to STRAVA.

    2) Something seems to be going on b/w STRAVA and GARMIN since previously we could export the GARMIN swim data to a .tcx file and then upload to STRAVA.  Now that possibility is gone, at least for INDOOR SWIMMING.

I am a premium member of STRAVA, which only makes me more disappointed with the entire situation.  So, I have a suggestion:

CUT and PASTE the link of your SWIM data and PO ST IT on STRAVA CYCLING FACEBOOK PAGE.  Here is the link to the FB page:

    http://www.facebook.com/Strava?fref=ts

DO THE SAME ON GARMIN CONNECT FB PAGE (Link below)

    http://www.facebook.com/pages/Garmin-Connect/55667706445?fref=ts

Perhaps they will give us enough attention since we are all loyal users of their products and services ! ! ! !

    I started it ! ! !

  • Yeah, +1 on uploading data from Garmin Swim and the 910XT.  At the very minimum, change the manual upload for swim to yards/meters instead of miles.

Anyway, nice to have - Strava seems to be a cycling site - it'd be nice if they could venture into other sports a bit better.

  • I would like to add my voice to those requesting this feature. I bought 910XT and I am very disappointed I can't post my indoor swimming workouts.

  • Come on Strava, its such a great product for cyclists and runners why not make it so for swimmers and triathlete. There seems to be a great demand for it and its why i'm not going Premium.

  • Full support for swim data would be really helpful and make Strava a useful training log for multisport. Right now it looks like Garmin Connect and Training Peaks are the best options.

  • Strava - your silence on this subject is noted. I regret to inform I have paid to join RunKeeper Elite for 12 months. RunKeeper does 98% of the things Strava does and has 150% of the device and inter-app connectivity so sadly lacking in your otherwise excellent offering. I will reassess my options in 1 year. Goodbye

  • Thank you all for your feedback, and I apologize for the delay in any form of official Strava response. I recently got a much-needed update from the Strava Product team on the subject of Swim data compatibility. So here is the update:

Yes - we want to fully support the swim data recorded by Garmins. Yes - this will take some design and development on our part to support the Garmin Swim technology. Yes - we hope to start this project in the next few months.

We are listening to the feedback here! Please stay tuned for future updates, and feel free to continue the discussion here. Just know we plan to address this topic in the future.

    Thanks, -Elle

  • Elle, that is great that it is coming but...

People here are asking two things: 1) Easy uploading of swim info and 2) workout data.

The first thing used to be automatic, but now must be done manually...just bring back that feature! Did Garmin shut that down?

The second will understandably take longer, but people have been asking for months.

  • Please keep us posted - purchased a Garmin Swim to replace a dead Poolmate and want to integrate the data. Big thing to beat Garmin Connect would be the ability to correct bad data from lap swims to correct missed turns . . .

  • It is time to improve to include swim! Or at least give us some info in how to do it.

Btw, suggest also to include Paddling/Rowing as a sport option.

  • To get basic swim data into Strava, follow these steps: (originally posted at and updated from: http://forum.slowtwitch.com/cgi-bin/gforum.cgi?post=4365161#4365161)

Get swim data to Garmin connect
    1) allow watch to sync/transfer your workouts
2)open the swim workout on garmin connect

    Export TCX of swim workout

    1) Click "Export...TCX File"
    2) this should start an automatic download of the tcx file into your default downloads folder

    Import that tcx into strava
    1) log into strava
    2) click the red "upload activity"
    3) click "upload a file from your computer"
    4) navigate to your downloads folder and upload the tcx file

    Change activity type to swim
    1) In the "new Activities" page, change the activity type to "swim" and leave the "trainer" box ticked
    2) On the main Strava page (http://app.strava.com/dashboard), click that new workout to open it
    3) Click "edit swim", and untick the trainer box, click save

Strava only displays the information in the TCX files, which is instant pace at time intervals. But, this does calculate total time and distance. The cool swim metrics displayed on Garmin Connect are only stored in the FIT file, and are currently not supported by Strava. I have been in contact with Elle, and working with her and the software engineers to get these features. Hopefully, it'll happen soon.

  • I thought Garmin had turned off the ability to export as tcx file for lap swimming. About 2 months ago? Have they turned it back on?
