Add better support for Swim data to Strava

I am thinking about buying a Garmin Swim, but it is pretty useful if it cannot upload it's data to Strava. Is there a possibility that Garmin Swim will be supported?

edit: THANKS TO ALL THE SPORTERS REPLYING IN THE THREAD AND OF COURSE THE TEAM OF STRAVA!!! SWIM UPLOAD IS POSSIBLE FROM NOW ON!!!!

Strava Support edit: Although Strava currently accepts Swim data from Garmin devices, this forum can still be used to collect feedback on improvements we can make to allow swim data to be more useful and better displayed on Strava, for both swim metrics and swim activity data. Thanks for your feedback!

  • Huh? Uploaded a TCX file to Strava after exporting from Garmin Connect - all good - but it doesn't sow in my activity list if I select 'All Activities' but does if I select only swim. Also - why doesn't it show on my dashboard. Don't get it. Anyone else seen that happen?

  • Yes. I had that happen too.

  • Also, any chance we can see all the data from the swim? All I get is time and distance. I know that was posted as being all that can be seen at this time, but it would be good to get data like the run and bike data.

  • Have emailed Support. The Swim activity doesn't even show in the list of activities / calendar either.  Have asked Strava is this is correct.... will share the answer. Such a ballache to get the data on to here from Connect, that it would be great if it actually showed in the results x-)

  • Darren Roberts:

Did you change it from a "trainer" swim to a normal swim? That is the only weird step I can think of. After that, I have all my swims show up on both my activity calendar (a grey line...runs are green, bikes are red) and the activity feed. It is on the activity feed without any filtering.

Could you try going through the steps I posted again? I do exactly that, and it always works.

Yes chap, tried all that. Didn't work.
Tried deleting all entries again and uploaded again. Didn't work.
The date is also coming out as '26/01/1990' which is a little Michael J Fox.

  • Bummer, man. I have no clue. If you could post the link to the garmin page and the activity on strava...I could have a look.

The date issue is especially weird.

  • Mine did show up with the correct date and on my dashboard. So, i am good there. I took it from Garmin connect and not Garmin Training center. Daniel, any chance the actual swim data will be able to be seen in the future.

  • The reason it's not showing up is the date, it's not in range of your current activity.  I had a weird upload once where the dates were all jacked up.  I attribute that to a Garmin issue not a Strava issue.  Garbage in, Garbage out ....

  • John Lilly III: I sent them several FIT and TCX files. I guess now they are looking at those and trying to figure out how to translate that numerical data into something graphical.

...They also requested a combined FIT file from doing a swim, bike, run in 'multisport' mode... :)

  • Thanks! I hope they will help us both on this.

  • Ken Wood:  You are bang on, the date error slotted it into the very beginning of my activity - and hence out of eyesight. Next stop > Garmin Connect to see why it exported like that.  Thanks for the clarity ;)

  • One more addition to this:  Ok, so Garmin Connect file shows the right date in the Strava 'Uploading' panel but when it's finished uploading and goes to the new 'My New Activity' panel, it shows a different date. Think I'll do what John Lilly III has done and send them Strava TCX file.

Progress. Albeit slowly. Thanks for help all.

  • Triathletes. More money than sense. Why _wouldn't_ you add swim data to Strava?

  • Swim data from the 910 would be the last thing I need to ditch my other sites and be exclusive to Strava...

  • +1! At the very least, would be nice to upload distance & avg. pace for indoor pool swims.

  • Yes! and add Segements for open water swimming! hahahahah. That would be amazing but a bit too difficult

  • for what it's worth, i was just able to upload the .FIT file from my Garmin Swim and it automatically recognized the file as an indoor pool swim with time and yardage. viewing the activity showed my fluctuating pace. not as pretty as Garmin Connect, but at least functional for now.

  • Hi All - I'm curious if other users besides Sam find success with uploading the FIT files directly to Strava? If your device transfers wirelessly (ANT Agent) it is often difficult to access the FIT files stored locally on your computer after you transfer.

Also, I believe you can now export the TCX data from Garmin Connect for swims, and upload the TCX files to Strava?

The reason that some indoor swims don't appear in the Strava uploader is because there is no GPS data, and we do not fully support non-GPS swim data yet. This is coming!

  • Thanks Elle!  You guys are the greatest.  I look forward to the day I can drop my buddies in the pool on Strava.  Wait, I better start swimming more...

  • Oddly, my total yardage shows up 25 yards less on Strava, but I'm not complaining.

  • Sam Stein: I just tried that with no luck. I clicked "upload a file from your computer" and selected the FIT from today's swim and got the red error: "Error Processing Activity" Perhaps it is a difference between your Garmin swim and my 910?

Also about it reading 25 yards less, I have noticed that if I complete, say, 1000 yards, it will read 975 on my watch. After the next push it clicks to 1000. I think if you hit stop before this, garmin connect decides during the upload to credit you 25 more (since it was XXX seconds since the last wall push and in the meantime it was recording a bunch of strokes). Strava probably doesn't add those 'gimme' yards. I have started just doing a quick push off the wall after my set to add those yards, so my watch reads 1000, then hit stop.

  • Elle, I tried yesterday with a FIT file from an indoor swim and was not successful.  The only way I've been able to upload is to export the swim from Garmin Connect as TCX as has been posted in this thread a couple of times now.

  • I'm a premium member and just got a Garmin 910xt. I thought it was a bug with the Garmin, but just found out that I can't upload directly to Strava. Please add this feature.

  • Also add a "blue" color code for swim on the data charts! I'd love to be able to see my swims included in my 4wk chart!

  • We want swim data! We want swim data!  What's the big deal?  More of us would probably go premium membership.  But until then . . . NOT.

  • As with many here once my garmin swim data can be uploaded to strava, I will upgrade to premium. Cheers

  • Huge fan/evangelist of Strava and am very excited to hear that Garmin Swim (non-GPS) data upload is on the radar.  Planning to purchase the product and was dreading the thought of tracking my workouts on two separate platforms.  Strava is awesome, I knew you guys would not let us down!

  • Count me among those that would pay for the yearly service if swim data was included. Until then the 'premium features' are pretty pointless.
