Add better support for Swim data to Strava

I am thinking about buying a Garmin Swim, but it is pretty useful if it cannot upload it's data to Strava. Is there a possibility that Garmin Swim will be supported?

edit: THANKS TO ALL THE SPORTERS REPLYING IN THE THREAD AND OF COURSE THE TEAM OF STRAVA!!! SWIM UPLOAD IS POSSIBLE FROM NOW ON!!!!

Strava Support edit: Although Strava currently accepts Swim data from Garmin devices, this forum can still be used to collect feedback on improvements we can make to allow swim data to be more useful and better displayed on Strava, for both swim metrics and swim activity data. Thanks for your feedback!

  • +1 for me as well (although I already pay). I've got a 910XT and I'd love to able to add my pool swims, rather than just the Open Water ones.

  • Hello Strava Swim supporters:

We are working on an update for uploading swim data from the 910XT. When this update is released, you should be able to view your indoor lap swims in the Strava uploader, and those indoor swims should upload to the Strava site!

However, we have not made significant design progress around the information displayed on the Strava Swim activity page after uploading: the reporting, metrics, etc. When lap swims are uploaded to Strava, you will see elapsed time, distance, start time (time of day) and a performance chart for speed, or pace. The activity page may say "Swam on a Stationary Trainer" which is a bug we are working to address (We understand that you 'ride' on a stationary trainer, not 'swim' on a stationary trainer!)

We hope to make the additional swim data and analysis recorded by the Forerunner 910XT available on the Strava activity page in the future.

    Thanks!

  • For those unaware, Strava staff have stated that they are working to improve swim data and Garmin swim support.

Im finding it frustrating the amount who make claims that they would go premium if Strava got the swim data fully supported. Trends show that while some may, majority of you wont.

Basically everyone here uses Strava for either running or cycling. You must be enjoying the service strava supplies or you wouldnt be asking for the swim support.

I say stop being a freeloader and help support Stava by subscribing to the very cheap premium service.

  • +1 on that Tim!  In a sea of low-value social sites out there, Strava is unique and truly stands apart.  What a killer service for athletes.  And the more of us who opt to pay the nominal annual fee, the greater the odds that the interface will remain delightfully uncluttered as time goes by...and ensure the Strava team has funds to invest in new features...like evolving the swim data!

  • Hear hear Tim and Joe.

I thought we Brits moaned alot, but 'bouy' oh 'bouy', we know a good thing when we see it. Top notch site which has quite literally changed the behaviour of some people I know, for the better.  Fact is, if I wanted masses and masses of data I'd scour the pages of my Garmin Connect account. What I do with that data exactly, I'm still trying to figure out.

This site, whilst it would of course benefit from additional swim capability and will at some point, does a marvellous job of socialising something which remains over complicated elsewhere.

So, to add to the comments from Messrs Rowe and Karp, put your money where your mouth is and let's get a cash injection into the Strava team.  I propose a new Strava Challenge 'I WILL SIGNUP TO STRAVA BY EASTER SUNDAY'

Now, someone nicked my KOM at the weekend and I'm off to get the bugger back ;-)

  • ps. 'I WILL GO PREMIUM BY EASTER SUNDAY' would of course be more beneficial. (Too much Accelerade this morning.)

  • Strava Gods - love your product...i'm a premium member - have been for a little while.  But you gotta add swim data for pool training.  The open water swim is great, and you guys are all over that, but we are missing out on all the training in the pools....Garmin Connect does a great job with the data.  You guys can too.  Thanks!

  • ps - @ Elle from Stava...could you guys create the little swim icon too?  Give us something while you work on the update? :)

  • Sounds good Scott! A swim icon for the Dashboard Feed seems like a natural step. Not sure if this is planned or not, but I'll pass the suggestion along.

  • To my surprise my 910 swim data uploaded today without the typical failure.  Basic time, distance and a pace over time graph, but that is a great start.  Much better than totally losing visibility to the activity.  Nice!  I also like the new upload look that allows the editing of basic information right from the upload page.  Keep it up.  Nice work.

  • Uploading it's also working for me! Great

  • Greg and Elquike, that is correct!

The new uploader will now recognize indoor swim workout files and upload them. We can't promise that the results will look all that tantalizing when viewed as an activity on Strava, but the next phase of the project will likely include adding more meaningful swim data to the Strava swim activity page.

Thank you to everyone for your patience here.

  • Definitely a great step forward with the indoor swim upload. Many thanks for this to the strava team and thanks Elie for the support. I'm looking forward to further integration of multisport activities ... such as triathlon.

  • Hi Matthias - can you point me towards an example of a swim with an incorrect date?

Thijs - the files from the Garmin Swim are compatible with Strava. What happens when you try to upload Garmin Swim files to Strava? Is the device not recognized? We don't have that watch in the office at the moment for testing.

@Elle : check this activity. All activity in 1990 are incorrect. Both are data from the Garmin Swim.

  • Thank you Strava - I knew you'd come through!  My Garmin Swim data uploaded seamlessly.  Would like to see more than just total time, distance and pace/100, but I know there's an evolution to adding features and that there will be more to come in time.  Thanks for listening!

  • Nice to see I can upload my pool laps! As a premium member, I thank the Strava team.

Now it just looks weird that it says "Swam on a stationary trainer"

If you can get the strokes graphed, that would be a bonus!

  • Gary Cruz - click "edit swim" and then untick the "trainer" box. You also have the option to untick that box right after it uploads, before you hit the "save" button.

  • Dear Elle.

    Great work by you all!

Small point of interest: When I do my pool interval training I'm used to only use the LAP button, I never stop the timing. In the Garmin software it recognizes that you are resting at the wall if you haven't swam as soon as you hit LAP again. That lap is recognized as a rest lap. By doing this the moving time is actually moving time. If it is possible to integrate this in future updates that would be useful. Now my Garmin stats show a speed per moving time while Strava tends to use the resting laps as swimming time, destroying my pace ;)

Maybe on a future update! I guess for now I have to start stopping my timing and lose the resting time info.

Overall, great job already listening to your users!

  • Thanks Strava for adding support for Garmin Swim! Just went for the Premium one year membership.

Looking forward to updates to bring more data in (stroke count, pool laps, laps timing)! This would be Gold for triathletes. Agree with some of the other users, "thanks for listening to your users."

  • Ms. Anderson  I tried my garmin swim today.  I uploaded swim no problem but i too have same issue with date.  In garmin connect date and time are correct.  I even tried exporting as tcx and manual uploaded.  It uploaded ok but strava set date to 12/31/89.   if the date isnt correct it wont show in my dashboard. and all my friends cant see how awesome i am.  jj
