Add better support for Swim data to Strava

I am thinking about buying a Garmin Swim, but it is pretty useful if it cannot upload it's data to Strava. Is there a possibility that Garmin Swim will be supported?

edit: THANKS TO ALL THE SPORTERS REPLYING IN THE THREAD AND OF COURSE THE TEAM OF STRAVA!!! SWIM UPLOAD IS POSSIBLE FROM NOW ON!!!!

Strava Support edit: Although Strava currently accepts Swim data from Garmin devices, this forum can still be used to collect feedback on improvements we can make to allow swim data to be more useful and better displayed on Strava, for both swim metrics and swim activity data. Thanks for your feedback!

If you have a spare minute, we're doing some research to better understand the needs of swimmers on Strava and how we are not meeting them. Pass along your feedback here, and we'll work it into our ongoing project.

    Thanks,

  • We might be able to manually add Swims to Strava but the fields and lack of data tracking is abysmal.  We need the level and caliber that we get in tracking cycling rides on Strava, for swimming.  I have uploaded from Wahoo Tickr X, and for Apple Watch, which has awesome tracking data, there is not even an option to upload (from Health App) to Strava.  I contacted Strava support and they just said currently the Strava iOS app only writes to HealthKit and does not read from it.  I really hope that will change in the near future.  Have a look at these screen shots of a single swim from Health app on iOS - we should be able to get all this data on Strava and see some nice charting the way we do for cycling.

  • YES PLEASE - do add better support for swimming to Strava, for devices such as Garmin Swim.

The data currently displayed is very basic.  As a minimum, I think you need to add the same support as Garmin Connect, which includes the ability to break down each interval into laps, and see for each lap:

    1) Stroke type

    2) lap-by-lap pace

    3) lap-by-lap stroke count

Furthermore, you should be able to track PBs such as 100m times, 400m time, 1000m time (or equivalent for those who work in yards) - in a similar way that you do for running.

Leveraging the social-media aspects of Strava (where you seem to have an advantage over Garmin Connect), it would be good if you could find some innovative way to give some way for people to give kudos and up-vote particular sets, make recommendations, etc., so that swimmers can be motivated to share and try other people's training sets.

Please consider!  I use Strava for most of my training, except for swimming where I find Garmin Connect to be a whole lot more comprehensive.

    Thx,

    Graeme.

  • Could you please add "open water" tagging for swim activities ?

  • My list of swim feature requests:

    • PR for swims (Fastest Length/Fastest 100m/Farthest Swim would be a great start)
    • When the Garmin Swim uploads workouts, Strava creates a Lap for each set (or "Interval" as Garmin would call it). This means one is unable to see more granularly what ones fastest length is, or how one slowed down over time. Surely there are better ways to depict this data?
    • Ability to edit swimming after uploading - eg, if I accidentally recorded 1 length after swimming 2 actual lengths then I'd like to add a new "Lap" (which is what the file calls this) and modify times accordingly. This is quite a common problem since many sports watches make mistakes.
    • The graph of distance on the Athlete page are sometimes scaled strangely, eg the graph could be out of 6km where the max the user has done in a day is 2km, so there is all this space that's not being used.
    • Another issue with the graphs is the inability to split them into Cycle/Run/Swim. Obviously one typically cycles further than one swims, so this can skew the information.
    • Challenges for swims, eg "Longest Distance in April". I'm not sure one could validate these though.

I'm happy to answer any questions about any of the above points. I hope this helps. Thanks.

  • Please add the ability to mark a swim 'Race' just like you can with run or ride. Triathletes would find this useful. Thanks

  • Please add a swim option for both pool and open water so I can record all the swims I'm doing with my Garmin 910XT!

  • Could we add the ability to tag swims as races?  It'd help for triathlons..

  • YES PLEASE!! Add swim activity upload support for indoor and outdoor. As mentionned by someone earlier, we can't ignore 1/3 of our lives.

    Thanks.

  • Hi. I think the best idea is to look at garmin connect for their swimming data. If we could read the same stats in strava that would be great. Of course I can always look in garmin but I tend to use strava all the time.
Things like average strokes per length - even seeing the
Swim in metres not yards. I couldn't see anywhere in account settings you can change that. Swolf is useful as well.
Just be nice to have it all in one place. Ideally just load up whatever is reflected in garmin connect - they got ahead of you
    On the swim :-)

  • Is there any chance of adding support for the new Platysens Marlin device?  It has great swim statistics in its own smartphone App - both open water and pool lap swimming.  It would be great to bring that data into the Strava environment, so it is together with all my cycling and running data.

Here's a video showing the stats and app visualisation for the Marlin (see 7:30min onwards, particularly 9:20min onwards):

    https://vimeo.com/221492582

Also check out how Garmin Connect allows viewing and analysis of data from the Garmin Swim Watch.

This is the sort of thing we want on Strava for Garmin Swim, Playsens Marlin, Apple Watch etc. etc.

  • I'm also a new Marlin GPS Swim Meter user.

At the moment the only way to get data to Strava is to export gpx to email and manually import it. I've not yet looked at pool mode ....

This note is just raise awareness to Platysens and Strava that there is interest out there for integration :-)

  • Are Strava actively adding new swim features to the platform? If so, one simple request, can you please add swimming to the dropdown selection on the profile settings?

  • This thread started back in 2012 and except for importing swim activities Strava still doesn't support tagging swim as a race, tracking in the user Training Log, etc.

WHY?!?, it don't make *NO* sense.

  • Garmin Swim support is still very sketchy, and certainly nothing like the data available through Garmin Connect..  The total distance is wrong, and the interval data is wrong.  Basically all it is good for is recording the fact that you went for a swim on a particular date.  It's been like this for years. Isn't it about time the data from Garmin Swim was properly integrated?

I recently invested in a Marlin Platysens.  Proper support for this device in Strava would also be fabulous.

As I think has been said above - Strava is great for segments on the bike and on the run, but for pretty much everything else it is lagging well behind other platforms, and I see no point in paying for the 'premium' service until it has better support for all my triathlon disciplines (vs Garmin Connect, for example).

    Thx

  • Hi, the official comment is now 3 ys old https://support.strava.com/hc/fr/community/posts/208834877/comments/211865267 , but the Strava doesn't provide good support for swimming activities. :( Seems this thread is dead.

  • We are all missing the point here, we are unwanted guests demanding things in a house that doesn't really want us there. Strava is meant for runners and cyclers alone, not for triathletes, swimmers or any other sport. It is meant only for those two as those are GPS based and can even be tracked with the app alone.
Strava (regardless of what the representatives say) has no desire to support anything else, no need for it as it is content with its runners cyclists user base and they are happy with it too.
We are really outthought get it by now and move on, there are other platforms.
I for one will simply uninstall Strava and forget about it as I'm not a cyclist, I only run and swim so Strava doesn't suit my needs and trying to change it is pointless, is like being in a relationship with someone only to change that person.

  • Because planning a feature and actually implementing it are two entirely different things. While the former might give one hope it doesn't help anyone until it actually comes to fruition.

As a programmer, I have some sense of the level of effort some of these mods would require and it is not extensive and some are very trivial yet would result in a significant improvement for the swimming user base.

So, look at the timeline of these requests along with how long it's been since anything has been done and since there's been an update on any progress and you'll get an idea as to why this all seems to be false hope of any improvement to the swim functionality of Strava.

  • Swim heart rate data and calories burned are readily available on my Garmin Connect uploads but Strava does not display the information.

Same goes for weight lifting, indoor running, indoor cycling, pretty much anything besides running or cycling.

I'm using Strava to track my workouts, but what's the point if the only thing it will display is the amount of time I worked out!

definitely not paying for premium service again unless these sensible features are implemented.

  • Hi

I would like to see, first of all monthly swimming challenges. Also as Garmin connect shows graphs on how fast each length is done, how many strokes etc, that would be a great addition. I use Strava for my cycling so would like to see all the info in one place. Being able to define which stroke would also be an advantage when calculating calories etc.
