Direct Messages on Strava

I think that Strava needs more social function in its system in order to increase its attractivity and its expansion.

Some of my suggestions are :

1. A personal message system

2. An event scheduler which permits athletes to plan a group event

I think both features would help to develop the commuity

  • My vote is for a PM system. Elle, I may have missed it, but it looks like your last comment was in Feb. 2014. The supporting votes are still coming in. You have said that Strava is considering a PM feature; OK, but can you comment why Strava has _not_ acted? If there are serious drawbacks--technical, security, market issues--let us know so that we can have some understanding as to why such a popular feature has not been implemented. Thanks!

  • Come on Strava!  We're working our butts off out on the road.  Do you think you could pedal a little bit harder on this feature?  If it's a matter of increasing the annual membership fee to allow this feature, then I feel that I would pay extra for this feature.

  • Both ideas are fabulous. Event scheduler would be freaking awesome, while the PM setup is plain old crucial.

  • Three years later & still waiting for this — I can't figure out if Strava is this backwards in understanding social media or is just waiting for a buy-out from the likes of Facebook. Either way, this will be the last year of paying for the service until their web offerings catch up to the 21st century.

  • I'd also love a PM system! It's awkward having to do things like invite people on a lunch ride and talk about dates and starting location and such all in comments to some unrelated Strava activity of theirs.

  • PM messaging would play a vital part in arranging group meets and networking to like minded people who you meet whilst out on a ride.

  • I'm not a social media type but, in general, I agree with the facility to be able to contact ones' followers directly for whatever reason, in my case it would be for to make my followers aware of my suggestions in order that they make their own comments there-on, in support or otherwise, for this would engender, or at least encourage a greater level of members' involvement in the enhancement of the Strava experience.

    My suggestion is:

  • How has this not happened yet?  I'd love to ride with other people in my area, or find other riders in areas I visit to ride with me, a direct message system would be a great way to communicate with other Stava athletes and schedule activities.  MAKE THIS HAPPEN STRAVA!!!!

  • Definitely need a PM system; I follow/have a follower who appears to live just round the corner from me who seems like he might be well suited as an occasional ride partner but I've got not way of swapping details other than leaving it on a comment on one of his rides, which I'm not going to do! Add a PM system or, at least, a means of requesting/granting access to someone's email address.

  • There doesn't seem to be any action planned or taken by Strava. Does anyone have ideas how to get some visibility on this request?

I can think of two possibilities:
    1. Create new support requests and link to this one. The new requests would have to have a response.
    2. Comment on the rides of Strava staff in engineering/product planning - see https://www.strava.com/about

    Others?

  • I think a lot of people follow others or a followed by others that we'd like to be able to communicate with without tracking them down in some other form (i.e. emails, FB, etc.).  Having the ability to post information about a ride to a group or message someone directly about a ride for example would be really beneficial.

  • Just phenomenal that such a simple thing like personal messaging is not part of Strava premium. Why are you guys missing the boat.  Google/Facebook aint going to buy you untill you really get the community talking to each other. Thats the real value of this thing. You don't have to roll it out on the mobile app right away but do it on the web site. This is the thing that my friends and I talk about the most. Strava  would be so much stronger. So much better with messaging. I can't understand why you don't want to do it.. what is the peculiar reasoning. Make it premium and you guys will make more money too...

  • I have had a few instances when I needed to contact a fellow member on strava, but the only way was to make a comment on the last ride that I had ridden with them and hope that they see my comment and reply. Could you pls add this feature soon. Also it would be great if we could create an event for an up and coming ride that other strava members could join, this is what we use at the moment on Facebook.

  • Try the Clubs/Group Events functions

As we approach the THIRD ANNIVERSARY of the original request (come on Strava, get with it already!), I'd like to point out that the Club function allows you to create a small club/group which you can make private, and in which you can post group rides as Events. This will fire off a notification to the club members. While this is far from solving the original issue completely, and not the most convenient way to announce rides, it does address some of the reasons people are asking for the messaging system, and some of us don't seem aware of it. Hope this helps some people.

  • RideWithGPS has private messaging. I bet if all the "Premium" users here switched back to free and paid at RWGPS, someone at Strava would notice. Just sayin'...

  • @Ben N - thanks for that; I think I might add that and see what happens. It would be nice of it was a default feature on Strava (perhaps they should buy, or license it from its developers), and it would be nice if the restriction "Only mutual followers can send messages to you. You can not post private messages to people that are not following you back." could be lifted (I guess if Strava bought or licensed the feature they could make it so!).
