Direct Messages on Strava

I think that Strava needs more social function in its system in order to increase its attractivity and its expansion.

Some of my suggestions are :

1. A personal message system

2. An event scheduler which permits athletes to plan a group event

I think both features would help to develop the commuity

  • Wow, this is really great.

As John already said, it would be even greater to have a non restrictional PM-system :)

  • Thanks for the feedback. I will add the option to 'Allow people I don't follow to message me' or something similar. Any more feedback is greatly appreciated.

  • @Ben N =  Great work, Ben! :-)  Mind if I make one small suggestion?  On the "...... hasn't connected to Velomsg.com yet" page, along with the image example shown, could you maybe add a short message that's able to be copied & pasted, such as: "I've sent you a message on http://velomsg.com/  It's an instant messenger service for Strava users... and it's free! :-)"   Just thought something like that might be beneficial to those users who only wish to PM with some of their Strava followers/friends... & will be notifying them over time, as the need arises.

Fantastic work again, my friend!  Cheers. .

  • Thanks for the suggestion Steve. I will see what I can come up with to make that part easier.

  • Ben,

Thanks so much all your initiative on this. It is coming up on three year since Christian first made his suggestion for direct, private messages on Skype. As far as I can tell, Skype has yet to provide a direct response to this thread. Hard to imagine why the silence. The function is obviously wanted by many in the user base. If it were some kind of technical problem, one would think it would behoove them to at least indicate why this is so tough to implement.

But, Ben, you may have given us a still-in-the-tent work-around. I do have a question, however. What sort of security issues might this approach have? Does your work piggy-back on Strava's software? Does it pass through our individual passwords to Strava in order to access our profiles? If so, does that mean that an individual Strava account might be made  vulnerable by passing through your software?

I am no software engineer, and my concerns are not enormous, but they are there.

    Best,

    George

  • Hi George, The software is using Strava's own API and conforms to their guidelines. Regarding passwords these are not acquired by http://Velomsg.com All passwords are entered directly in to Strava. We in return get notification back that you have logged in from Strava.

I hope that puts your mind at rest regarding password security :-)

    Kind regards
    Ben

  • It would be very interesting to integrate with a platform like CycleWe. This is an initiative of Nikki Terpstra to plan rides and meet cyclists.

Is it in scope of Strava to expand is platform?

  • Unbelievable that there isnt a private messaging function on Strava.  Apparently they dont read thier own zendesk feedback.  Hire me, I can do that.

  • I think this would be a great feature to have - it would be nice to talk about riding with someone you don't know in real life.

  • This would be a great plus to Strava. As others listed, comments on someone's activity are broadcasted to everyone. Strava needs a message tool which can:

    1. Send private person-to-person message.

    2. Send group messages. For example I'd like to send a message to everyone on my team, but not be visible to people following me who are not on my team.

  • What if we called it a Sling or something, like a Hand Sling in the madison?

  • PM is needed. How else are we meant to arrange rides? Through a forum or board for groups? What if we want to catch up with just one rider for some reason.... it should be there. Considering we're paying for premium membership - it should definitely be there. Hey Strava - here is a suggestion - make differences in allowance for messaging between free and paid memberships! That will raise some $ too!

  • Direct messaging would be an ace feature. I run a cycling club across various platforms, one of them being Strava. Would be great to be able to send messages to people here too.

  • Great thread. I wanted to let everyone know that we are working on some projects that will make communication and planning much easier.  No exact time frame yet, but work is underway.

  • As others said, I can't believe there is no private message feature. The fly by option is great, but what if you pass that person everyday and wanted to send them a message? It would be a great way to make friends.

I signed up for the premium trial, but if there is no private message feature by the time it ends, no way i'm going to pay for it.

  • Yeah, private messaging should be a feature to contact other members.

    Both ideas are good!

  • This would be a great idea!
It would be great to ride with others that are local and others that complete the same segments.

  • I haven't been able to upload since Saturday. And, since that time I have been trying to get Strava Support to help. Got an initial email on Sat. but since then nothing. It's now Tuesday. Is Strava support really this bad? I need to resolve this NOW.

  • This feature would be so useful,to be able to contact people you follow on strava and may not have met so you can arrange a group ride or just get out with someone to meet up is what its all about, when your following members who your all in the top ten say,to meet and ride with them would make each member become a better rider,so this feature would allow this to happen.

  • I agree to the comments here. Strava claims to be a social system. These features are a must.

  • I would really appreciate being able to private message other riders. Some of the posts about adding this feature are 3+ years old, maybe more urgency on adding this feature is needed.
