Mountain Bike as separate activity type or tag

Please add mountain biking to the list of activities in the app because the cals vs speed are very different from road riding. Also a count down to workout start would be a good feature.

  • Why hasn't this ben sorted, surely it can't be hard to separate the two and people have been asking for so long now.

  • There's a catagory for ebikes, why not mountain bikes?

  • I could see having a tag within the activity to denote a mountain bike verses other types of bikes, but I really don't think it is realistic to have it as a totally separate activity at this point in the game.  There is far too much historical data in the system that is not broken out by bike type that would clutter leaderboards.  The difference with e-bikes is that they started out with their own activity type from the start, so there is no a decade of data with them included with other bikes.  There is no way to go back and correct all of the past data.  The only way to do it would be to start over with all new leaderboards for segments from this date, forward, but then you would effectively be taking legitimate KOMs away from people who earned them up to 10 years or more ago.

  • I'll admit that it would great if the historical data could be accurate but that shouldn't keep anyone from improving the categories. Especially when you are comparing mountain biking vs road biking. The bikes, and more importantly the trails, are completely different. I've yet to see a roadie ripping down Apex on their road bike. And who cares that much about a historical KOM that it should keep Strava from making things right, especially from 10+ years ago.

  • Mountain biking has need around since the 80s, Strava should have created a tag from day one! I just don’t see why people would lose their KOM because of adding a new activity tag to their future rides. I’m honestly at the point now that I will drop my subscription to free at my annual renewal because of the continued ignorance of Strava.

  • Robert - I may have not been totally clear with my previous post.  Adding a way to "tag" a ride as a mountain bike ride won't really cause any issues and won't have any impact on segment results.  Those rides will still fall under the main "activity" of a "ride", but would have a sub-heading of mountain bike.  I think this makes sense and would be easy for them to do.  There is only an issue if people want them to make mountain biking its own separate "activity".  That would mean that it would have to create its own batch of "segments" since they would be a different activity than "ride".  The problem I see with this is that now you would have duplicate segments, one for "ride" that has all the data to this date that includes mountain bikes mixed with other bikes, and one specifically just for new rides that are classified as mountain bikes.  An example of my concern would be if I set the KOM on my mountain bike 8 years ago for a segment.  Now someone would make a new segment over the same section of trail in the new "mountain bike" activity type.  The old historical data that does not have that designation would not be included and someone else who rides it this week with a mountain bike, but was far slower, would then supposedly have the "mountain bike" KOM.  Just makes for confusing data and incomplete results.

Again, I think adding a "tag" for mountain biking would be fine and probably a good addition.  I just don't think breaking out mountain biking as its own "activity" separate from "ride" would be good.  Just my opinion though.

  • The leader boards are the most screwed up, no one on a road bike is taking my Kom on dirt, and Im not taking his on my mtb on pavement. But on the weekly leader boards his miles  and elevation and distance on pavement count the same as mine on dirt, even virtual rides count the same as my dirt rides, I can ride my ass off all week on dirt and barely get in 100 miles and someone will sit in his front room and do a vitual ride and do 500 miles, not exactly fair, not the same sport, fix the leader boards, separate the activity. I road bike also, I feel guilty doing a road ride and it counts on the mtb clubs i'm in leader boards, because i'm not doing the same sport, it to easy on pavement compared to dirt. It's like mtbers are second class citizens on strava.

  • dear MTB and Road cyclists,
we've been asking Strava to introduce MTB activities separately from road bikes for about 8 years.

Today, after receiving the email Michael Horvath & Mark Gainey from Happy New Year and how the stimuli and all the adventures of all of us are stimoles for them to improve Strava, I decided to post the request for this forum on Linkedin again.

    This is the link

Hopefully 2020 will be the right year to introduce this feature.
