Tag a friend and add them to an Activity

I have only been using Strava for a couple of weeks, so this is a beginner question. A friend and I are following each other on Strava already. We ran this afternoon, but only he recorded it in Strava. I am trying to find out if it is possible to "tag" me in that run so it will be a part of my profile and stats?

  • Thought it was just me ! Both my husband & I are on Strava and log-in through Facebook and he usually records the cycle ride on his Garmin and if I am on my own I do it on my phone via Cyclemeter. When we come to share on Facebook through Strava and tag each other - a list of other Facebook friends comes up but not each others. Really annoying me now as I can't work it out what is wrong I think it must be a FB setting but all very strange. We follow each other on Strava and Close Friends on Facebook. The funny thing is the list of friends it suggest wouldn't know one end of a bike from another let along Strava! Anyone had this problem?!

  • Strava! How about a reply? This is a feature a lot of people would clearly appreciate some input on. This is the 2nd time I've checked this thread for the same thing.

  • People/users/customers have been requesting this feature for years (this post alone since 2014). Clearly shows that Strava don't care enough about customers requests.

Incidentally Runkeeper has had this feature for years... Strava ou are literally running behind the competition!

    Poor form.

  • This would be a really useful feature

  • My friend recently did a double Everesting taking 36 hours where people like myself showed up two consecutive days and rode a few laps but were not included in his overall activity.

I've also completed Everestings where friends who showed up for single, double, or even triple laps were excluded.

A simple button to "add friend to activity" would suffice.

  • @andrew

this is where this feature becomes complicated. In your example, you want some credit for being there even though you only did a small(er) portion of the overall ride. What most people are asking for here would give you credit for riding the entire ride mileage/ altitude gain (and any other stats Strava chooses to include) for the entire Everesting which you didn't do.

This "me too" option really only works for people who completed the same activity start to finish but for whatever reason didn't or couldn't record the activity themselves. Imagine riding with someone for 50 miles of a 1000 mile race and given credit for the overall distance :)

There are really 2 requirements, one to say hey, I was there too in some capacity, and another to actually get credit for mileage that goes toward your yearly data. I still think anyone that gets added to an activity should not receive any recognition of segment times achieved by the main activity.

  • I've been contacted by Strava support about this!

[We re always looking for ways to improve the product, so I’m reaching out to you as we’d like to get your thoughts on a new mobile feature: tagging friends]

They asked if they could schedule a call with me, but being a non native English speaker I asked for another option, so they sent me a survey instead. Very friendly and quick responses from support, nice. It seems they are seriously working on this, which is great.

Looks like they're worried about the stats (speed, records) to put in the activity and so on, but frankly I don't really care: If I tag a friend in a ride, I do it because we are just casually riding together, so I'm not going all stat-crazy over it or anything. I believe Runkeeper works that way too (but haven't used that app since switching to Strava).

Not sure how more fanatic cyclists would like to see it, but hey if your friends phone dies they would not have had any personal stats at all so whatever right ;)

  • What an amazing idea! Doesn't even sound like it would be hard to implement. Love it.

  • Great news everyone -

This feature is being released within the next week. As one of our most popular community requests, we want to thank everyone for your patience until we could make this happen. We are really excited to give you the ability to add friends to your activities who didn’t record or aren’t on Strava yet.

More details will follow soon about how this feature works. Keep an eye out for the "Tag a Friend" button on your activities!

NO WAY, after 4 years this really is getting implemented! I thought this 4-year thread would remain a +1 spam thread forever :) Congrats for doing this, looking forward to see how it works!

  • It was implemented, disappeared for a short while but should be available right now. The way you tag someone is a bit odd (been a while since I've done this) but I believe you get a button to add someone right before you can save your ride. If I use it again I'll check

    -edit-

Well what do you know..it's not in the screen you see when saving an activity (where it should be) but you can add friends later. As soon as you save your ride and look at it's page, you see a [With someone who didn't record? Add Friend] button. I would swear that button was IN the saving-screen before, but maybe it's just me confusing strava with runkeeper.

Either way: it's there, but in an odd place.
