Ironman Challenge for triathletes

There are a lot of triathletes active on Strava. So far there have been only challenges for running and cycling only.

So I was thinking on a Ironman challenge?
My idea is that the athlete has to do a Ironman distance in all 3 diciplines: Swim 3.8km - Cycling 180km - Running 42.2 km total 225 km in a given time. (2 weeks). The leaderboard should be time related I think, only finishers on the leaderboard and the athlete that has the fastest time on the 3 distances together would be first on the board.
Challenge badges could be given for finishing 1) the swim distance - 2) the Bike distance - 3) the Run distance - 4) finish the Ironman. First 3 being random of course.
Swim files can be uploaded with the Garmin forerunner 910xt, forerunner 310xt or Garmin Swim.

Challenge preferably to be held in summer months.

  • Really great idea! Thank you Mark ;) I would add that intermediate challenges could be considered with shorter distances: Olympic then Half IM to finish with IM. As it was proposed with Marathon in october!

  • Hmm, I guess the hardest thing about that is that people are unlikely to do a marathon in training? Personally in the lead up to a race I'd cover the 3.8k multiple times, and the 180k bike at least a couple of times, but I would do more than about 35k outside of a marathon race or Ironman race. Depends how seriously people take the Strava challenge I guess!?!? Or if the challenge happens to fall in race week for some people?? Also sometimes the garmin doesn't quite pick up the full distance (especially in open water) - in IM last year mine said 3.75k, 179k, 41.5k, so I wouldn't have got any badges despite doing the whole thing! The Half IM idea of Jerome is a good one too, and more likely to get a competitive leaderboard??

  • Well my idea was not to have to complete one distance in one swim, ride or run. I understand that this would be hard on the marathon. So you could do several swims, rides and runs and the total distance will add up until you finish.

    I agree that OD and Half-IM could be done as a challenge where one should complete the seperate swim, ride and run in one stroke.

  • Let's do it...and why wait for summer? We can hit the indoor pool. Or do Half Distance in the off season and then go Full during season.

  • Great idea, but just a comment to add! Summer months in which part of the world? I live in south Africa which is obviously southern hemisphere and has summer on opposite months of the year as Europe and USA/Canada. I actually think this challenge needs to go on every other month or so to be used as off season motivation for whoever is not on racing season during their own winter months.

  • Given the ridiculous cost of Ironman races these days, and the great lengths you have to go to in order to simply register in time (e.g. even  travelling across the country to be there the day after the race one year prior) I was even thinking that a virtual Ironman race would be a good option for some...at least for a race, here and there.  This could be on an international, or if it makes more sense, local basis.  That is, having set out courses for each city upon which the swim, bike segments would need to be done by participants within their own personal time schedule.   An ironically high tech way of taking the ironman back to its simple non-commodified roots.  Anybody else out there who might be interested.  While I am in Toronto, I could think of a number of routes which would be viable, particularly as it would be done on an individual basis and thus, not as much of a logistical challenge.   That is, I think we could all marshal ourselves by following the rules of the road and taking reasonable precautions to assure our own safety.

  • I should add that I would envision all three events taking place within some specified period, say 24 hrs, as we would each be able to set aside the specific day that works best for us...and the part I like is, that we can choose a nice sunny day, rather than being stuck with the crappy race day weather that we often face:-)
