Allow Strava's record screen to stay on without auto-locking

I was wondering if there's a simple way to set up Strava so that my iPhone recognises that it's running in the foreground and as a result over-rides the auto-lock feature. I'm aware that you can manually set the auto-lock to "never", but for obvious reasons it'd be nice if I didn't have to do it that way.

  • I'm don't agree that disabling screen lock is a good idea. What if you happen to lose your phone while running/cycling. Would you want the person who finds it to get it all nice and unlocked ?

  • If you are concerned about a security gap in the event you lose your phone while using any app that prevents screen lock (and there are enough of those), I would suggest https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lsdroid.cerberus&hl=en

Then you have the ability to remotely lock the phone with a new pass code, among other things.

  • I've recently got a bike mount for my iPhone so preventing the screen from locking would be particularly handy. Can we get this is a near future update please?

  • Is this feature coming soon ? PLEASE. Cannot use Strava as a bike computer without it.

  • I too recently bought a bike mount and found that Strava locking was highly annoying without the user having an option to control the behaviour.

  • I have switched tacks on this one .. started using Wahoo Fitness app as my cycle computer (which keeps the screen alive). It shows me the things I am most interested in live, namely heart rate and cadence. The app directly links to my Strava account , enables a "Share" option once the ride is completed, and sharing to Strava nicely puts all the details there.

  • +1.  Every other running/cycling app has the option to stop lock screen.  Strava has the concept of live segments too which automatically update and just require a swipe but you can't just swipe because the screen is locked :-(

It's a bit of a pain when, at the end of a run or ride, I have to enter the security code and unlock the phone just to be able to hit the Finish and Save buttons.  As others have mentioned, others apps like Wahoo Fitness stay active, and don't seem to be a huge drain on the battery.  I run with the phone securely strapped to my arm, so I don't really tend to expect that losing it during a run would be much of an issue.  But perhaps for those who run holding the phone in their hands (yikes!) this would be more of a concern.  At least please make it a setting we can toggle on and off, please!

  • Hey guys!

For those of you who use android I found a workaround.

    Use this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nbondarchuk.android.keepscn

Set it to keep screen on only when strava is running it's that simple

  • Yes please !
I've been using map tried and it makes life so much easier when you're on a bike and can't be faffing with your phone screen.

  • Why can Strava do the difficult things really well (segments, stats...) and won't do the simple things (screen lock, countdown,...)?

  • New version, but doesn't have this simple upgrade to allow the app to be used as a live data display.  Makes the majority of the app totally pointless as cannot be used to give current speed, pace etc without it going into screen lock.  Come on Strava - read the user feedback to determine what would be useful.  Totally frustrating.

  • +1.  So many other apps offer this functionality and it would be very handy on shorter rides where i don't have to babysit battery life.  Also it would be handy when I am trying out new routes.

  • Can't believe that this feature isn't implemented. More over why hasn't Strava responded to the request (maybe I've just missed it). Until then I will continue to use RunKeeper as seems an altogether better app, just doesn't have the same following in the cycling community.

  • Since my iPhone is provided by my employer, and we have a policy installed that forces us to use a passcode with a maximum of 5 minute delay before locking, I too am in need of the Strava app to keep my iPhone screen on while riding.  Some have asked, "Why do you need this function?"  Well, in my case, I like to ride other people's routes that I'm unfamiliar with, and I need to watch the map as I ride to make sure I take the correct turns, etc.  This is a very important and simple function that Strava desperately needs to incorporate in their app.  Without it, sharing routes with Strava friends becomes unusable for iPhone Strava app users.

  • I directly contacted Strava support on this item. Copy of the response here:

"Matt McKinzie, Oct 24 01:43 PM:
    Hello,
Looking at our product road map, there is a plan to implement it in 2015, but there is not an exact time. Sorry I do not have any more detail at this time.

    Cheers,
    Matt

  • Lets down an otherwise great product!!

  • I am used to plan a track before a ride and then consult interactive map on my phone from time to time, especially if I am riding at some place I have never been to, before. If the screen keeps turning off, this is impossible and might be even dangerous (to try to turn screen on by entering the password while riding). I thought I will move to Strava (even payed for a month premium membership), but without this feature and ANT+ support implemented, I'm off...
