Classify Segments as Road or Trail Segments

Would be nice to have a feature to determine whether a segment is on a road or trail. Could be a "surface" category: Asphalt, Gravel, Dirt or a "type" category: Road, Two-Track, Single-Track. Could also be an automatic determination based on reported bike type (90% of rides used a MTB, 9% Cross, 1% Road).

This would help with segment / route discovery.

Note: Yes, you can often tell by looking at the map... but not always. And would be nice to be able to search/filter for it in the Segment Explore feature

Note: this is different from https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/21054846 which wants a filter on a segment leaderboards for bike type.

  • I agree that segments should have different designations.  I don't think it's that easy to tell if a route is road bike worthy or if one can navigate it only with an MTB.  Different colored segments might help on the Explore page.  I could care less about KOM.  I usually only look at how I compare within my age group or against my past performances.  If someone is beating my time on my road bike with their mountain bike, more power to them.

  • Thanks for the feedback. There is a feature in development to classify segments as dirt vs. road depending on the highest percentage of bike type used - either road or mountain, etc. Not sure when the project will be finished!

  • Awesome to hear it Elle - Thanks for the update.

  • This would be a really useful feature - especially if you could combine it with suggested routes based on a combined "heat map" that would identify the most popular routes.

  • Especially useful to overcome mapping of roadbikes to a dirttrack that is closely located to a asphalt

  • would be nice to have this for runs as well (probably not based on shoe model trail vs. road ;) )

  • Agreed - I'd also like to be able to refine segment search, for example to only cover segments of over a specified length, or of a specified height gain.

  • Agree, I'd also suggest that along with this, that Club leaderboards could restrict to only certain ride types.

For example an MTB club or magazine could filter out road rides so that only MTB marked rides would show therefore allowing those doing Epic off road rides to deservedly take the weekly plaudits over those who have shot off and done a middle distance Road ride.

  • yes i was just about to ask support about this, it would be great when planning routes, as only do road riding but like to do hill's.   with this type of filter i could remove any segment that is tagged as off  or partial off road.

please please please make it happen

    and in case please again

  • With the new route feature, it would be great to see other riders comments on those specific sections/areas of the routes. I planned what I thought was a nice long route climbing on road, turned out to be a glorious morning of climbing packed dirt, but it would have been nice to know ahead of time so I could plan accordingly.

  • Can we get an update from the Strava team on this?  I'm excited to see this feature available.

  • Case in point: http://www.strava.com/segments/6104062 A dirt track parallels a bike path. Would be nice to distinguish between the two.

  • I would also like to differentiate the segments by surface type but by bikes used would not work. Locally to me there are several segments that are road. But 99% would be mountain bikers because its a road that leads to the start and finish of a mtb trail. Road riders still come down every now and again to ride the same hills but its quite uncommon by comparison.

My preference is ideas one and 2 below but have added some other ideas.

Idea 1. Original Author edits the segment. Give them a notification to make the changes to there segments

Idea 2. "suggest an edit" If so many request the same edit, it then takes effect automatically. Old or new segments (Can work along with Idea 1)

Idea 3. The next person to ride an existing segment gets shown the map of where the segment was and asked what was the surface for this segment? There should also be an option "I dont remember" so the user is not forced to make a decision that could be wrong.

Idea 4. Have a seconder for Idea 3 . If that person agrees, its offical.  Or they change it and then that person would need a new seconder.

Idea 5. Take the next 11 votes

Idea 6. User reviews .Results could be something like 95% say its a road segment (take this as the default for segment searches/filtering. 3% say its mixed. 2% say its Dirt

  • Agree with Tim, above - its the actual surface which takes precedent over the type of bike most used.   I mean the type of surface it's supposed to be (a lot of our roads in the UK are rough enough to encourage use of off-road machines but there's a still a world of difference between true off-road dirt and "UK pavé".

  • About time we could distinguish between on/off road segments. If we could select road or MTB when recording a ride it would be a start. I'd like to see a means of reviewing a segment, as suggested above something like '95% say this route is off road' or similar to that would work. Could include something to rate difficulty (blue, red, black etc.) or type, downhill, single track/trail and so on. No need to make it too complicated, just a few things to rate on each segment if you wanted to.

Strava is geared up for road cycling, a few changes could make it far more useful for MTB. I'd consider going premium if those changes were made.

  • I'm getting tired of segments not being picked up when off road. I'm sure it is down to GPS drift which isn't helped by tree coverage but couldn't the tolerances be altered when off road?

Fix this and I'll pay my premium subs again :)

  • This would great to tell the difference between Road, Rail-Trail, and Mountain riding, even if it was just a user select-able item to start with then I could keep track of my own riding how much of different types.

  • Strava team, any update on this? I'm concerned about Elle's note from Dec '13 that the developers were looking to use bike type as the determining factor: that would *not* solve the issue of trail vs. road for runners, and we really could make good use of that as a distinguishing feature on segments and activities when trying to assess a potential route and/or comparing results. A simple checkbox on upload "off road/dirt/trail" and the ability to retroactively tweak the designation for existing segments.

  • I think Garmin have the option to classify surface type on their connect website. Cant be that hard to do surely?

  • Endomondo has the option to choose from 'Cycle - Sport' or 'Mountain bike'. It's not complicated. Haven't used it for ages but I assume you could see what type of ride other people were on on a particular segment/route as to whether it's road or off road/trail. Come on Strava, it's that simple. I could just get the Endomondo app again.

  • Even if there were basic taxonomy tags to add to a ride, that would at least allow you to tag a ride with things like "mountain", "paved", "dirt" or "asphalt". As much as I want to use this app, it's not terribly useful, when I can just pick up any other cycling app, which will let me differentiate between an uphill road climb and an uphill mountain climb. The last thing I really want to do is search for "cycling" rides only to find I've brought a mountain bike to a paved road.

  • Paved or nor paved : Ideally it will be nice to have the information of surface of the route, so I will not create a route I can’t never use with my road bike. How you can get this ? First add type of bike in gears, so you can analyse all the ride you have recorded and detect each section how much road bike use this section. Base on this, you can relatively accurately get if a road bike can use this section. Other idea is to use the gyroscope of the phone to detect the vibration, but, this can be battery intensive.

  • I see that this has been going on for some time - any update?

You have thousands of willing and engaged users - why not ask them to classify - and use majority to make official. Yes there may be some idiots who will try to break the system - but on the whole would be about right.. surely not a hard fix - every segment with a tick box - next time someone rides it - give them the option - over about 2 weeks  you will have enough responses to generate a recommendation..

PLEASE fix this - as frustrated mountain biker with only road rides recommended!!

  • I am a road biker, and if I create a route through unknown area, I use "Most Popular" setting to create my ride. It happens that my road ends when suddenly there in an unpaved road before me.

    - When uploading activities to strava can't you have a check box "Only Road biking" only Mountain Biking" or "Mixed" or...
    - Get every segment a checkbox "Paved" or "Unpaved" And set it for good as soon as 100 users have set it, to be sure it is correct.

  • ..and of course be able to use this data when creating new routes for road biking or mountainbiking

  • How about adding a drop down selection for "road" or "trail" etc when you're creating a segment?  Then allow the creators (or users) of existing segments to edit/classify them.  This would take the burden off the Strava staff of having to do it or figure out how to do it.

  • This would be a great feature. As the original questioner suggests, I'd suggest that it's based on the reported bike type.
