Enable Satellite view for iOS Maps

You should be able to change the type of map that is displayed on iPhone, as when doing mountain biking you don't ride a road that is on a map and with satellite mapping the map would be more meaningful and easier to identify different segments.

  • Satellite view is essential to read properly and precisely segments and maps.
Could you take into account this update ?

    Thanks by advance

  • Please update map view for iPhone. Needs satellite view badly. If it can be done on an Android it can certainly be done for an iPhone. Thanks

  • Strava, how long we have to wait for the update? Can you give some information?

  • Complete waste of time nagging Strava for this feature, this has been going on for ages, they're obviously not interested. No way will I pay for this app without sat view.

  • Trail finding is absolutely impossible without satellite viewing! Sort it out! Who knows... Strava could be worth paying for!

I suppose there's always map my ride...???

  • Complete waste of time nagging Strava, they aren't listening. I won't part with a penny to upgrade to pro version until this feature is enabled. Useless without it.

  • I was directed here by Strava Support for this exact issue.  They told me to post my ideas and with enough support, Strava will look into it, but it seems there are already plenty of people wanting the same thing.  It's been almost 2 years and the fact that they have yet to implement proper maps is very disappointing and shows they obviously aren't listening and don't care.  Not cool Strava, not cool.

  • #LinkedIn

If anyone is on LinkedIn please get in contact with https://www.linkedin.com/in/gonzalezrosamaria - Rosamaría González, Director of Support at Strava, Inc.

That may be the best way to get any change to happen with how they treat the "unknown cyclists" or as we like to be called the "Mountain Bikers!"

  • OK. I got the final anwer from Steve of Strava Support team: "As of right now, there are no immediate plans for this." and moreover, asking why this feature is working with Android only, he followed up: "The Android operating system operates with different capabilities in terms of what the infrastructure can support".

I understood... and found a solution: installing Cyclemeter, it free and the Elite version costs less than 5€ forever. I has every possible maps, works perfectly and, listen what, it automatically synchronize with the my free Strava account, enabling all the social features of Strava.

Hope this helps mountain bikers ...and Strava team. bye

  • Dear Strava,  Why do you not give satellite view on iPhone, when it is possible on Android phones?  Why do you not answer the other comments below..?

  • Because they don't care. I was a premium member for 2 years, but why would I keep paying when they can't even implement a basic satellite map that so many apps (including the android version have?. I'm not a programmer, but it seems like this is such an easy fix. Instead they just keep ignoring us. Many people have said they'll never upgrade to premium without this, and I don't blame them. I was premium, and left because Strava doesn't listen (or respond) to us.

  • Wow, 2 years on and still not done. I just switched back to iOS from Android and really not happy this feature is missing :(

  • I can't believe that satellite view is not available on the mobile version. Just seeing red lines on a white background makes using the map on trails almost useless. This is a feature that NEEDS to be fixed.

  • There is only 44 likes for this issue and only 48 comments. Strava is not going to look at this unless there is more support for the function. Ask all you friend/followers to commend and like.

  • I am an iOS developer and I know that adding the Apple maps satellite feature is just as easybas adding a button and a few lines of code. It is very absurd that iOS version of Strava don't have this feature. It should be added in the first version. You have to add it as soon as possible because we NEED it and it is very EASY to add!!!!!

  • Does Strava not use their own app on iPhone? Not having satellite view completely defeats the purpose for mountain biking. Now that I have an iPhone I will probably stop using it, whats the point if you cant tell where youve been?

  • Just bought a Garmin. Garmin Connect app is excellent and has satellite view. I only use strava for segments now. Not a cheap solution to the problem but if you can afford a Garmin device at least the connect app gives you satellite view on iPhone which is essential for MTB;)

  • Given how trivial it would be to add this, I can only conclude this is a conscious decision on their part. The only thing I can't understand, is why?

It's not like they have to license the imagery in order to use it, Apple provides this map data for them to use as is.

  • Open source your iOS app and I'll submit a pull request to add this. All the business logic is server side anyway, at least this way we could actually fix some of these lingering issues

  • This really takes the biscuit. I've just come back to iOS from Android and was expecting the app to be better than the Android version, but it's not the case. This is basic, basic stuff. As I Premium user I'm sorely disappointed. And what's with the nasty dark app theme? The desktop and android apps are far more useable. Sort it out guys.

  • IOS users try ' MotionX GPS' search for it on the app store for iPhone.   $1.99 and then free to use.

-A dozen map types including Openstreet maps and several satellite maps.  -'Share' your ride via email or social media (kmz and gpx)

-Tag activity type, walk run, cycle etc

-Easily import gpx file into strava.

-You can download (cache) map tiles for a given area to your phone prior to riding to avoid loss of www connectivity on the ride and reduce data charges.

I have been using for 5 years. Check it out and read the reviews.

-You can also send live position updates from your iPhone (needs data) at set intervals so that others can locate you on a satellite map via the Motion X www site.  Only those who you previously provided your secure pin code will be able to see you on the www based map.  Useful if you are out on a cross country ride on your own as the folks at home can keep an eye on your whereabouts.

  • Hi there,
Can you please post an update on progress to implement this key missing feature? Users have been asking for this for over 2 years, with another thread also supporting this (https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/208848797-Satellite-map-for-Iphone-app-)
    Thanks
