Enable Satellite view for iOS Maps

You should be able to change the type of map that is displayed on iPhone, as when doing mountain biking you don't ride a road that is on a map and with satellite mapping the map would be more meaningful and easier to identify different segments.

  • Guys. Easy answer here - use RWGPS instead. Far superior mapping (has satellite, open maps etc) which you can also take off line AND has turn by turn sat nav style audio. Has its own segments, and syncs with strava for this interested in those leaderboards. Also syncs with Garmin connect k

  • It would be nice to have satellite maps on IOS app. you cant get the real picture, or a perspective of the length of a ride in a map thats only green colored. I dont get whats the difficulty in adding that feature. Android can toggle Satellite map view

  • A basic and essential feature that we desperately need. Come on Strava. No KOM for your app without it.

  • Still no satellite view in iOS app. C'mon, the app is partly quite useless when running trial or doing mountain biking. You have knows this high demand for a very long time without taking any action so please listen to the users!

  • Good morning from Spain.

I still can not understand how upgrading to iOS 10, the Strava app does not get the update to see maps satellite, as this helps us a lot to follow and better see the routes we do and guide us much better in the mountains .

It seems that only takes into account Strava users of Android and I think it is wrong not to have the satellite map upgrade.

I hope you have an early update with satellite maps.

    Thank you very much, greetings.

  • When are Strava ever going to listen to this? No way would I ever pay for the pro version if they can't even give iOS users satellite maps? Pointless and useless until then.

  • Don't hold your breath. We have been asking for this feature for 3 years now and Strava is still ignoring us iOS users.

From a tech company that can put together the technical wizardry of Strava Flybys one would expect enabling satellite view on iOS to take an hour or 2 but for some reason it is not being prioritized...

  • STRAVA - I would suggest that you at very least make a comment on here.  You speak a lot in your marketing about communities, but you are blanking this thread.  Just grow some and make a comment.  If there is a reason that it can't be achieved, then at least people will understand the issue (whatever it may be) and realise that you are listening to people.   In this particular context, I would suggest that most people here interpret your silence as "quite frankly we don't give a sh*t about IOS users who ride or run off road......", so much so that we are not going to even bother to take the time (2minutes) to answer them.

  • Ali S., well stated.  It's been over a year and a half since Strava has commented on this issue.  I think everyone on this post would appreciate an update.

  • Hello everyone - unfortunately this is not a planned feature right now. We'd love to offer more map views on iOS and Android and therefore we would love to consider this project in the future. At this time, we are simply busy with other projects. Thanks for understanding.

  • this really is pathetic - there are 100's of apps out there with this feature.

  • We want satellite map already, we need it, but people will end up marching to other app that offer this service.

  • Enabling this feature is just adding a button and 3 lines of code on iOS (as Alex Robinson mentioned)! It is not a project, come on!

  • Agreed. Pathetic response from Strava - busy with other projects since Dec 2013?

Please could everyone that is subscribed to this thread re-post and urge other iOS users to post.

I am refusing to even try my free month trial of Premium because of this issue.

Having to switch from Strava to Garmin Connect just to view satellite maps is a pain, and having to open the web app to view satellite view of segments is also a pain.

Such a gaping hole in an otherwise amazing app.

  • My guess is that is most probably a wider reason, such as  someone standing their ground in Strava over the IOS vs android debate.  It could be as simple as someone in a position of 'power' could an have an issue with apple, therefore are making a statement.  I'm no app developer, but I suspect that there is not a huge amount of work to enable this feature, as it is just another map.  ViewRanger has loads of map options, so do other apps out there.  It is such an obvious glaring, gaping abysss of a gap in the product.  So it has to be something 'political' in the business to p*ss this amount of people off, because in the scheme of things adding another map would be a 'quick win' for the marketing team of STRAVA. They know it, but have obviously been told that they are not going to do it.   Strava see the merit in Satellite maps otherwise they would not be available in Android.   Most  other apps make the effort to make the Android and IOS version of their products have matching features and capability.  Therefore, by the process of logic, in my opinion, someone has taken the decision to exclude satellite view for IOS.  It isn't an 'oversight', it is a strategic decision.

  • I also can't understand what the problem is. Can somebody from Strava please give an explanation .

  • I do 90% of my riding on trails and satellite map view is all I want. Every time I see an update for the Strava App. I get annoyed. I pay for premium and I'm starting to feel like we're not getting any value when Strava admin just ignore their paying customers ongoing and minor requests for a basic and fundamental feature like satellite maps.

  • Strava Pro version without landscape option is lame. UnPROfessional, not worth for the bucks. No word from Strava means they don't have any plans neither they are looking forward to having it.
Move on people, find other app that can cater to your needs, forget Strava and ask your friends to not use it anymore. Spread the word!

  • Seriously! Strava is a great app but it can't cover fundamental cyclist needs! Cross country mountain bikers and cyclocross bikers need this map view to show the trails....

  • Another one here who rides mtb and runs trails. Looking at more orphaned segments in a sea of beige today.

Actually quite baffled this isn't in there - if its more than about half an hours work I'd be amazed.

Cyclemeter's been doing it for years.

Guess Strava's only really for road use.

  • I've been using the Trailforks app instead of Strava lately, mostly for this reason. They're way ahead of the game.

  • For certain Strava is a partner or owned by Google (Android) and they're f***ink the iOS users. It's an absurd thinking, but it's starting to make sense more than other explanations.

  • PS: Runtastic is an excellent alternative.

  • Recently switched to Strava after dumping Runtastic after just 3 months (I'd been using RunKeeper for over 2 before that) as there are feature on here that are fantastic, e.g., segments and clubs. Also, almost all the runner last I know personally are on it.

But not having any map options other than standard on iOS is shocking! I trail run mostly (and mountain bike) so the standard road map is pretty much useless. Satellite view is a good alternative as you can usually pick out the tracks and trails, but there are other options (which are available in Runtastic), such as OCM (Open Cycle Maps) and OSM (Open Street Maps) that contain other information about cycle ways, bridleways, footpaths, etc. Whilst these would be an excellent bonus I'm really surprised that Satellite isn't available as it's part of the iOS Maps software. Strange...
