Enable Satellite view for iOS Maps

You should be able to change the type of map that is displayed on iPhone, as when doing mountain biking you don't ride a road that is on a map and with satellite mapping the map would be more meaningful and easier to identify different segments.

  • I always assumed that it wasn't a feature until my friend got his android phone out and simply changed to satellite view. WTF, I pay for premium membership and don't have this feature???????? Will be going back to free until this is sorted. Not happy. :-(

  • It's obvious Strava doesn't care as their genetic reply insists. It's a simple code insertion that is integrated into the map. They obviously don't WANT to install it for iOS. They are ignoring this thread. So everyone needs to start new ones demanding this simple feature.

  • I cancelled my premium subscription and told them why. So at least they know the reason. Whether they do anything about it is another story.

  • ..."We'd love to offer more map views on iOS and Android and therefore we would love to consider this project in the future. At this time, we are simply busy with other projects"
    - Nov 2016.

    Dear Strava,

It's the future now.    I attach a few screenshots from my recent MTB Strava premium experience. Looks good doesn't it?  Detail is outstanding....assuming you are stuck in the year 1985. I realise that apple iPhones are not very popular devices and not many people own them; and that mountain biking is not likely to ever catch on, and access to satellite images is really bleeding edge technical stuff in 2017.  However, despite all of this, why not take a massive risk and go for it in this niche market.  It's cutting edge stuff, but I'm sure you could handle it.   How about it? Go on, feel the fear, take the risk, accept the challenge.

  • Dear Strava users.  Can I suggest that perhaps we need to ramp up the awareness for this feature.  This thread seems to be ignored, so I suggest that everyone of us starts a NEW post in the 'feedback on iPhone app' and also a NEW post in this 'feature discussion' section of the community forum.  Then everyone 'vote' for all of the new posts :-)    Come on people, lets get this done.

  • Perhaps we should give up posting here and start posing feedback on the iTunes App Store site. So get onto iTunes and tell new iPhone users and strava that the Strava App for iPhone is a poor choice if you want to have a good app for mountain bike use or have ability to see satellite view.

  • I'll be downgrading my premium membership until this is fixed on iOS.  Come on Strava...  We need this and audio turn by turn directions...

  • Dear STRAVA!

Satellite map is one of the worst for cycling. I think. What can I see on it? Nothing... trees and clouds :) sometimes only big pixels! You should check the Hide & Bike or THE BEST - I think - http://mtbmap.cz, because I saw a colours of the road sign and a lot of not signed road which used by any forestry on it.

I used before a WP10 mobile maaloo Outdoor and I could download offline maps on different zoom level AND you have decision to which online map want to use. Nothing some on the other corner of the earth :)

Can I ask you to try it!

    BIG THANK YOU!

  • How does anyone MTB, run trails, and backcountry ski without a freaking topographical map view (i.e. "terrain view", "elevation contours").

So easy, and IMO, more valuable than Satellite view.

  • Seriously? How long have we waited and the update only adds Satellite and Hybrid views on completed activities?

Great, so I can see where I went on all my trail runs and mountain bike rides once I've finished, but I'm still unable to see where I am or where I want to go during an activity.

FFS... I supposed we'll have to wait another three and half years for that...

  • I've been waiting so long for this.  Thanks Strava for listening to the forum and making this happen.  It's a giant improvement for the MTB riders.  Thanks again!!!

  • Surprisingly I found satellite and hydride view on the maps in iOS map today which is good but is this really a 100% finished function? The AppStore is not saying anything about this for 9.0.0 and there is still no satellite view for segment view

  • I've been using Cyclemeter to log my rides and then uploading them to Strava.  Cyclemeter has real-time satellite and topo views.  The Cyclemeter to Strava integration is seamless.  There's really no reason not to use it.  Plus it has the ability to summarize your ride statistics by week, month and year.  It has a lot of great audio feedback too.  Lastly, I use Cyclemeter to sync up heart rate, elevation, duration, distance, humidity, & temperature with a Wahoo RFLKT.  It's a perfect solution.

I still find Strava's post-ride satellite view essential for segment views of my rides and those that I follow.

  • @Elle Anderson, You should add the Satellite and Hybrid options on both recoding map and finished activity map, adding it only to finished activity map is not solving the problem we are having!

Please spend some time to read posts and understand them, we were very clear about the problem. Since your iOS developer "learned" how to add Satellite and Hybrid views, I hope you will add it to the Record view as soon as possible!

  • Nearly there people. The satellite map 'post ride' view is halfway to solving the problem but it's a bit like your parachute opening after hitting the ground! So let's hope that common sense prevails and there is an option under settings when STARTING a ride to select satellite map before recording your ride.

  • Hello everyone, we have decided not to update the map options for the record screen or for Routes. However, satellite and hybrid map options will soon be on all activity, segment, and segment explore views on iOS.
