Include Weather Conditions for Strava Activities

For the ridden route, pls include weather conditions for a segment when the riding took place

- Temperature

- wind direction

For example: In Australia, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) makes the observations available for various areas. So when riding on a road that exists in an area covered by the BOM, then overlay the segments of the route with weather conditions at the time of the ride.

Similarly, you can overlay with a weather forecast for routes generated in My Routes.

Let me know if you want more info.

  • Yes, wind!
We don't have any mountains in the Netherlands, but we do have wind and lots of open spaces. Temperature/rain etc etc would be nice as well.

  • Garmin Connect does this !?!?!?

  • May I ask what the benefit of having this data would be?  Would it affect your segments or ride in any way afterwards?  Wind can play a huge factor, but it can also be extremely localized through canyons so unless Strava uses data from every single wind sensor out there, a general forecast or history of weather would be useless.  That said, temperature is already included in the activities if your device records it.

  • Wind speed and direction is easily obtainable from local wx stations.  It would be helpful when looking back on your workouts and comparing efforts with prior rides. As I noted before, Garmin Connect already does this, so it cannot be too difficult to incorporate.

  • I came into this forum specifically to log a request for Wind direction and speed.  I commute in San Francisco where this is a very significant factor -- it isn't very meaningful to compare my rides without it.     It would be nice if wind direction and speed could be used to compute a positive or negative weighting factor that could optionally be incorporated when comparing times and calculating rankings.    Other significant factors it would be nice to manually add are 'load' (whether rack is attached and the approx. weight carried) , traffic ( particularly hiker traffic on mountain bike routes ) .

  • Seems like the basic data is already available at Garmin connect.  Can this be bought across when the two are linked?

  • i'd be curious to see temp and precipitation.

it isn't nearly as important to me as other features, but temp certainly seems really easy to implement- the data is widely available.   Maybe integrate it into the "suffer score"... because, let's face it, riding hard in 20/68 degrees just isn't the same as riding hard in 35/95 degrees.      The latter incurs more suffering.     I know, it's subjective, but if strava is all about "proving it" then I want some bragging rights when I suffer my way up a steep hill on a sweltering day.

  • Cyclometer includes weather information in its ride entries, so it can be done. Weather does make a huge difference to a ride or run and it would be nice if Strava recorded that information.

  • Even a way to manually input the direction and wind speed would be nice I realize that when doing an out and back during strong winds the average is good but, it would add more realism to the segments when you see that he was doing 30mph with a 20mph tail wind >.<. Having this info on my ride did not occur to me till I had to buck 20mph winds today and thoughyt the data collected would be more useful with the weather included.

  • I just signed up for an API key on weather underground in preparation for trying to hack something together for myself.  I'd rather ride my bike so, I'll add my YES! vote.

  • So many other services have already implemented weather conditions: Garmin, Runmeter, RunKeeper… One of Strava's biggest advantages over the other services is competition -- we love to compete! What's the delay?

@Elle you agreed back in February 2014 that this would be a great addition. It doesn’t get much closer to the Strava roadmap than you J “Great feedback! Thanks for adding your comments, and keep the votes and feedback coming. I agree this would be a great addition to Strava.” February 10, 2014, 5:08 PM

  • For me also its a improvement if weather reports are including from your activity, especially temperature and wind direction.

Garmin is already showing a weather report about your activity.

  • Hi All,

I'm integrated weather information with strava segment leaderboards for any activity. I worked my ass off to get this working and would love your feedback and suggestions. The url is :

  • Padraig, this is awesome.  Looks like you got the tough data integration working.  I love the info but I'm left wondering one thing: Was the wind a headwind, tailwind or other.  It would be great to show two vectors, one for the direction of travel and one for the wind.  For example, on an E-W road, the wind is from the East but we don't know which way the rider is moving.  Building on this idea, you could show some relative contribution the wind had on an effort:  you know, cosine theta ....1/2 pv squared .... and then basically weed out the real winner on a segment:  40 km/h into a 25 km/h headwind.  Nice work.

  • Hi Steve,

Thanks a mill for taking the time to check it out and give the feedback.
I do have the wind direction included. Underneath the google map is the segment bearing arrow. It's pretty small so I'll make that bigger. Also for each rider rank there is also the wind direction arrow of the wind at the time they rode the segment. Again its a small arrow so I'll make that bigger too. This compared with the segment bearing lets you know if the wind was a head, tail or crosswind.
I'm travelling back from training at the moment so I don't have access to the laptop to do up a image to point the arrows out to you. Ill post it in a reply when I get home.
The arrows  are pretty small so I should resolve that ASAP as this info is the main driver behind the app.
Love the idea of the calculation of wind contribution on an effort. I will certainly look at implementing very shortly.
    Cheers man.
Thanks again Steve for your feedback.

  • Hi Padraig, Very nice implementation and Awesome work mate.

I echo Steve Davies' feedback re the "nett" speed calculation to determine the real winner; however, I wouldn't discount the rider with the fastest time. So may be, when you display the real winner it would be good to show the difference in time against the fastest time. That way, we'll be able to tell the time impact of wind assistance.

    Great work again.

  • Nice work @Padraig! I've also tried your new tool, and it's pretty great. This feature suggestion has risen near the top of the pile recently, and discussions are getting started. No promises or timelines, but just wanted you all to know this feature is being considered.

  • Thank @Elle for the feedback and it's fantastic news that Strava are considering implementing this feature. Win for all of us :).

In the mean time I've added graphics to segment direction and wind direction to make leaderboard and weather information clearer.

    E.g see http://www.peaksp.com/Segments/Leaderboard/678029/Sallygap-Eastwards

I'm also thinkering around this weekend with a feature I think would be great on Strava also to complement ride/run weather integration. Hopefully I'll have it implemented before end of weekend and see what ye guys think.

    Thanks again.

    Padraig.

  • Hi All,

I've added another feature whihc I believe complements the Strava/Weather integration feature well. For any segment you can now click on a button (Shown in attached image) that will get you a 5 day weather forecast for that segment which includes wind-speed/direction and temperature at certains hours of the day. I think this would be a super handy feature in Strava that would be helpful when planning single or group rides or runs.

    Thanks

  • Hi All,

Final message from me for a while I promise :). Just want to let those interested about the final funcationality I've added to the Strava/Weather integration site and would like to see in Strava app.

Yesterday I added A 5 day weather forecast by segment. I see this as useful for planning rides:.

    • Maybe you would like to have the elements on your side when you attempt to better your time on certain segments.
    • Maybe you want to run/ride into a strong headwind to get an extra hard workout in less time.
    • Maybe you simply want to plan a group or solo ride and want to tackle segments at a time when you wond get soaked wet.

Today I added a feature which uses calculates if a rider is in a group based on segment based on the leaderboard activity date times for that segment. See attached photo. This is handy info as the riding in groups and drafting greatly effects speed and effort.

The final feature I added a notification system that will email all subscribers to a segment of when there are any changes to the leader board. Strava notifies us when your KOM is taken. This will notify you whenever positions on the leaderboard top 10 change.

Friday I added large wind direction arrows and segment direction arrows.

Hope you find this usefull and please get in touch if you have any other suggestions.

    Padraig.

  • Hi James & Kitty,

Kitty, the app does provide the temp, wind, rain as you mention. I am capturing the humidity but don't display it.

James, afraid I've shut down access to new members for a few reasons. Mainly that there was a lot of feature requests coming in and as Strava will be eventually implementing weather it does not make sense for me to put more development time into it. There is also hostingt and api usage costs which were adding up for me.

I've moved my focus to other projects and work for now. Thank you for showing an interest in it.

Looking forward to seeing what Strava implement.

    Padraig.
