Include Weather Conditions for Strava Activities

For the ridden route, pls include weather conditions for a segment when the riding took place

- Temperature

- wind direction

For example: In Australia, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) makes the observations available for various areas. So when riding on a road that exists in an area covered by the BOM, then overlay the segments of the route with weather conditions at the time of the ride.

Similarly, you can overlay with a weather forecast for routes generated in My Routes.

Let me know if you want more info.

  • I wonder why this feature ist still missing.

Weather is SUCH a factor in any outdoor activity and should of course be documented. Taking into account how easy it is to collect current weather from a wide range of sources over the internet makes the lack of this feature even more puzzling.

A comment from the Strava crew regarding this topic would be highly appreciated.....

  • I have done this at

    http://52.49.96.139/stravaweather/

It will plot a map with historical weather conditions for each segment in an activity. It is still in development though so it may be a little flaky :-)

  • I didn't read through the entire chain, but I'd add Dew Point as well as that's a key measure of humidity!

  • @Ben Mumma That's a great idea! I think I can actually add the relative humidity percentage.

  • @Brendan Berney - that'd be great. I have a regression model that adjusts run speed based on altitude, total climb/net climb, temperature, and humidity to get to a more realistic measure of the effort of a run.

  • @Ben Mumma - ok that's done now - (added relative humidity %)

  • @brendan Berney, Good work mate! Is it possible to show metric units? also, is it possible to display dots for the segments instead of the full data? click the dots to view the details. There are multiple segments which make the data overlap and hence harder to read.

  • Actually Garmin Connect does this!

    also Endomondo!...

So... Strava has not any kind of excuse, for this and ALSO for put a FILTER/classification for GROUP RIDES.

There are too much KOMs done IN GROUP and also with a tail wind...

    THAT'S BORED

  • yes please! wind factor should be counted on the calories algorithm.

  • @MAZE, I have done the dots thing now, just click on them to show the full data. I will look into metric units. It also now plots recorded accidents involving cyclists (UK only for now) along the route so you can see blackspots.

  • In addition to temperature and wind speed it would also be useful to have humidity. Not only can it affect the difficulty of the activity but high humidity can be a safety issue so it would be helpful to know what the conditions were on previous runs and use that knowledge to gauge what is appropriate for the current conditions.

As an example, I have nearly fainted twice in high humidity but had no idea that it was affecting me until I took a break, at which point I suddenly could not stay standing.

And one interesting app for Strava Weather: http://www.epicrideweather.com/

  • Just adding more support. Other apps have this as a premium features and it would be great for Strava. Thanks!

  • When is this feature coming? This would be really good. Can't be that hard.

  • Knowing these factors come into play with everything.  I live in Arizona, so segment times during the day in the summer will be slower than winter, temp/humidity will help gauge performance.  One guy told me that KOM times can depend on wind because seconds count.  So I need to wait for a super windy day, and focus on that segment to be at the top?  Other riders have told me you can look up that on a different app, then contest it.  Why is it not in here?  The more data the better.  I was out last Saturday, and did a couple of hill climbs, over heated, now am trying to get the temp for that window, this will tell me if it was hot or I was just weak.  Gotta try to blame it on something! :)  LOL  Instead of looking at Almanac's, the link above, or another source, make the Strava app better!

    Thank you

  • See https://klimat.app

It's a bit of a shameless plug... I wrote Klimat because I wanted weather data in my feed :)

  • Klimat.app looks like a real great plugin however I'm not so happy about the Terms of the app making the developer not liable for any (not on purpose) data leakage of for example username/password combination of my Strava account.

  • Hello, pls let me know whether the Klimat data can be made optional for individual recordings (activities) or else I shall opt to cancel the connection. So, if the answer to the abovestated Q is negative, pls let me know how to disconnect klimat from Strava, thx in advance.

  • The weather data from Dark Sky in the app has only 2 lines and is always truncated before the wind direction. Maybe that is only the case in German where the words are slightly longer than in English (i.e. "Windgeschwindigkeit" instead of "Wind Speed") . Are there problems in other languages too?
