Should Pro riders have their own Leaderboards?

We have a UCI race come through our city and all of a sudden there is no way anyone can take these segments back.

  • thanks for the insight. but not super helpful. I'm just saying.... because we can currently see results by weight and age, why not by "pro"?  Also wondering why a professional rider would strava a race.

  • My response was meant to be tongue in cheek.  The reality is, there's always someone faster out there to take your KOM.  Sometimes they're WAY faster.  That's reality.  To say no one can take the KOMs back simply isn't true. Maybe you can't, but that's not really Strava's problem, is it?  That's like me complaining because a faster rider than me moves into my city and starts snatching up all the KOMs.  Oh well.  It's not fair for Strava to say fast people can't take KOMs.  That being said, the ability to filter out Pros like you can do with age groups/gender/etc. wouldn't be a bad idea, but preventing pros from being on the leaderboards of segments just isn't fair. Besides, I know of segments around here where amateurs hold KOM titles over pros that have ridden the segment.  Big boost to the amateur's ego I'm sure, and well deserved.

As for pros using Strava during a race... the better question is, "Why wouldn't they?"  I mean... why do you use Strava?  Same reasons, I suspect.  To track stats, measure progress, and especially compete with your peers.  Competing for segment KOMs during races (which some pros do) adds another element to the sport, just like intermediate sprints during stage races.

  •  I'm not saying it's not fair that someone is faster than me. i hear ya... don't get me wrong, I'm all about competition. I just made a suggestion that it would be nice to separate them to get a picture of local activity.

  • If you are looking at a leaderboard for the locals can start up a new Club and encouraging the local riders to join. Then use the leaderboard existing filters to only show your local peers rankings via the Club filter on the local segments and any Challengers you enter

  • I´m with "D" - no recreational rider can take an KOM made by an pro. NEVER EVER! So a Pro Leaderboard would help. For e.g. look at the time difference an the quillan - pailheres segment. Laurenz ten Dam rode an hour faster than any other. No one can beat this. No One!

  • I think there should be a way to filter pros separately.

  • What's wrong with coming 2nd or 102nd? What is this, school sports day? So long as pro riders are easily identified, then its nice to compare times. Filters only, and no separate leader boards is best.

  • There is a fun plug for this feature at minute 3:35 in this video:

  • Yes, a simple filter would be nice.  I'm not certain how Strava will track "pro" cyclist.  If they can it would be good. At my age though, the age group filter does in effect weed out the pro's. ;-)

  • They just came through Victoria & Melbourne.  Should be able to filter out all those with a status of pro athlete.

  • I would like to be able to filter out pro's whenI want to and see them when I want to also. It's great to have an unattainable goal right? ;o)

  • Definitely would like pros to have a separate category.

If these pro-cyclists ever were to enter a amatuer photograpy contest, they would never find me competing with them, that would feel just....... wrong.

  • Every year a pro race crosses an area, all KOMs will be smashed and naturally become unreacheable. One thing is a pro training hard.. and another is a UCI pro race... from KOM or top 10 one easily gets down to 300s hehe

Since Pro riders have a special profile (can hide their power and HR data) I guess that it would not be difficult to create a filter. I agree that they should not be excluded from leaderboards, but it would still be interesting to be able to still have a "real world" benchmark..

  • Same for training rides: it's cool to check pros training but doesn't blend well with your friends' activities. So pro toggle, please.

  • There is a difference between pros and the others.  Pros seem to have the time to train all they want while the rest of us have to work, so getting to the pro level is impossible.  I have no problems with those who fall into the elite category (work and train) but not with pros.  They are different.

  • Hello,
I'm against the pro leader board.
everyone should be ranked on the same leader board, and as it is today its good, it's even made some publicity for pro and I'm sure they can negotiate sponsorship with this kind of publicity.

But I'm for a more precise filter, more selective by level of rider. Pro and non pro is useless.
But like in zwift : elite, a, b, c, d.... Where the rank are based on our w/kg.

Filter categories by W/kg for cyclist and vma for runner .

It may be very useful to compare ourself against ride of approximately the same level as us.

I'm a bad roadcyclist so I'm not even looking rank segment, I'm just comparing my ride with my previous ride to see if I improve.

But if I can see where I sit with people of the same level than me that could be helpful and motivating.
