Sync Nike+ to Strava

Hi,

I've started using Strava to track my cycling and like the app.  I have however already got a long history of running with Nike+ GPS devices and am happy with what I have.  I understand that Nike now offer the ability to integrate with their service through the developer.nike.com, is this something you could consider and a new feature.  It would be nice to see my training data in one place without the need to buy a new GPS watch (i.e. a garmin).

Thanks

  • Still waiting for Nike+ Integration. The Matt Steuhler Data Downloader freezes with virtually every attempt to transfer. I've gotten a few runs transferred out of hundreds.  Is there hope of a strava-sanctioned integration tool any time soon?

  • Hi, the problem is with Nike+ They don't want to share the data. I have just bought a Garmin, because my Nike+ watch is not longer able to share the data with Strava, but I'll have to leave my Nike+ account. So sad Nike doesn't understand we love to share our activities.

Anyway I'll let Nike know what I think, hoping they change their mind.

  • Thanks. https://nikeplusexporter.rhysmccaig.com/ works fine but requires a manual fetch from Nike+ then a manual download into Strava. That was fine when I was transferring data en masse, but the daily 'sync' is a nuisance. Until I find something better though, I'm grateful for the tool.

  • Cheers Andi T - that exporter worked a treat.  I have now added over 300 runs to Strava!  Strava misidentified some of them as rides, but you can change that on import.

  • help! :) I was using the rhysmccaig site and it was working great - I can't seem to login to it now though; I've checked my password, tried changing it, tried accessing from different browsers - none seem to work.  I even tried incognito mode ....

I can't login to the mattstuehler site at all, and have never been able to.  anyone else have this problem? I want my gpx files to upload to strava..

  • All the third party tools are now dead. There's no longer any way of using Nike with Strava. I'm going to really miss Strava :(

  • Hey guys,

I see that the links that used to work, no longer do https://nikeplusexporter.rhysmccaig.com/, https://mattstuehler.com/lab/NikePlus/

Any other suggestions, links or ideas? I really do enjoy having all my activities under one platform.

    Thanks

  • Ok, maybe there is a solution of sorts:

First, go to http://smashrun.com and log in / sign up whatever with your Nike+ credentials. Click to sync your runs with Nike if it doesn't do it automatically. Smashrun gives you a bunch of cool stats for your runs, it's a neat thing to have anyway but most importantly it allows us to do the next step...

Second, go to https://tapiriik.com/ and click to connect Smashrun to it. Now you can also connect your Dropbox and/or your Strava account, and Taporiik will let you sync your runs between Smashrun and Dropbox/Strava. Unfortunately Tapiriik takes a very long time to sync, it will say 'queuing' for a good 20 minutes, but it works eventually.

So, after each run, you'll have to just click the sync button in Smashrun, and then after that you can use Tapiriik to do whatever you like with the data. So far I've only tested Dropbox, it gave me *.tcx files which I could upload to Strava, I haven't tested letting Tapiriik upload directly to Strava yet. And I haven't paid the $2 to Tapiriik for auto-syncing yet. I just used all this for the first time today.

Hope it helps someone, and let me know if there's an easier way!

    UPDATE:

Letting Tapiriik upload straight to Strava works great. And the auto-syncing on Tapiriik only updates once per hour so it's up to you if you want to use that or just do it manually.

So overall this is a neat solution, it's actually less hassle than the previous site (no need to download a gpx file then upload it to strava) but Tapiriik is very slow. The process after each run is simply:

    1) Open Smashrun, hit Sync

    2) Open Tapiriik, hit Sync

That's it. It takes 20-30 mins but you can just go off and do something else then when you come back your Nike run will be on Strava.

  • Strava are you there?? It's ridiculous that we still can't use Nike+ devices with Strava. I've been manually uploading for a couple of years for the Strava community links etc. But Matt Stuehler's site and now the iPhone app no longer work. This conversation is well over 2 years old now - what\s going on??

  • So Matt's site is down for good now?? That was working awesome, but now I have hundreds of miles on Nike+ that I can't upload. Trying Andy T's method with tapiriik, really hoping it works!

  • It's not Strava's fault, it's Nike who does not want to share our data, because their consider it their property forgetting we have paid for our Nike+ watch and all the activities we record is our personal data and if we want to share it is our decision.

We need to tell Nike+ to free our data.

  • Please feel free to try this new uploader tool built by Jérémy Coelho https://twitter.com/jcoelho35

    http://www.jeremycoelho.fr/projets/nike-exporter/#/

Sorry for the trouble with transferring Nike+ data to Strava. We've heard the reports that the previously shared tool to transfer data from Nike+ to Strava is no longer working for some.

Unfortunately Strava doesn't actually build these sorts of integrations. Any current integration we have with other device manufacturers such as Garmin, Suunto, Polar, Fitbit, Soleus have been built by the device manufacturer using our API which allows simple transferring from those sites.

Sorry for the trouble, and please continue to share your feedback here.

  • I'm writing a Windows exe

And I'm able to extract Nike plus data then generate tcx file that can be imported to strava

For now only metrics data are used so I still have to integrate GPS data

  • Thanks Andi T - those two sites are great! I've been using Matt Stuhlers iPhone app for a while - but it stopped working recently, which was a shame. I tried contacting him to see if he was going to try and tackle the problem but got no reply. I know this isn't Strava's fault - it should be Nike that we are requesting this feature from - but they want to keep the data to themselves and I doubt they actually have much to do with the website and apps - they'll just be outsourced. Unfortunately the Nike+ website is pretty useless for anything more than seeing your splits for an individual run. You can't compare runs or see any detailed analysis. I've been looking at getting a new Garmin watch to replace my Nike watch simply because I'm hooked on Strava now... but these two sites (and the process) described by Andi T is a great interim measure - and I'm pretty impressed by the Smash Run website itself. Thanks!

  • Travis, thanks for the Strava response. I understand that the other device manufacturers created the functionality to sync with Strava. However, the main difference with the companies that you mentioned was that their main revenue product is the actual device (i.e. the watches), and not the web/app based run tracker. They have an incentive to create as much cross-functionality with web/app based run trackers as possible, i.e. buy this Garmin watch and you can export your run anywhere you want.

Nike+ on the other hand uses their platform as a way to try to have you buy other Nike products. They tried a few years ago with the devices, and have given up (except for the Nike fuel stuff, but not really the same as run tracking). The point is, they have no incentive to create the ability for people to freely leave their platform. The more traffic they keep on Nike+, the more of a chance someone buys Nike apparel. They are not going to spend money to hook into your API to allow people to jump ship on Nike+. Your services are too closely related, and frankly they know once you leave Nike+ for Strava, you won't come back.

Getting to my point.... there are a huge amount of people that have used Nike+ for a long time, and are tied to their historic run data. The only thing stopping them from leaving Nike+ and joining the Strava community  (and possibly paying you to become a premium member as I have) is their run history. The company with the incentive to spend a little bit of money to create this functionality is Strava, not Nike+. Just something to consider.

  • I'm also searching a way to get Nike+ data into strava!!!

so far there were several ways:

Nike+ Data Exporter - Now Retired

the "NikePlus Exporter" chrome extension - now also "grey-listed" by Chrome

... and this one https://mattstuehler.com/lab/NikePlus/ does not want to regognize my username/password....

    anyone any other idea????

  • I called Nike+ support to request this integration as an update (USA 1-800-379-6453 8am-5pm PST, seven days a week) and the rep I spoke with said that the more people who contact them requesting a Strava integration, the more likely it is to happen.

If all us Nike+/Strava users put some pressure on Nike to build an integration maybe we'll see a change.

  • Vivian Sue - yes I have. Four runs won't sync and I'm gutted because there were a couple of PBs in there. I have however managed to synch one run since then. I've tried everything to get the 4 problematic runs sorted though. I think they need removing from the tapiriik.com site, but I can't get any response from them.

  • Hey Chris - That's super annoying. I've even tried using tapiriik to export to dropbox - no luck.  let me know if anything works for you! I've just been using my iphone strava app for the time being. I've contacted the person behind tapiriik about a week ago, but no response yet.

  • Hey Vivian Sue - I synced today - only the 2nd or 3rd time by the tapiriik - smashrun method. Was sitting there wondering why nothing was coming through to Strava. I was blaming tapiriik - due to it's apparent slowness and unusual MO (seems to run in a kind of background auto mode rather than just doing a task when you tell it to). Eventually I saw the little refresh arrow on the Smashrun overview page - Top R under logout - which started the transfer from Nike+ and got things rolling. From there it all worked.

  • Actually, I think this comes down to a problem with Nike itself. I was playing with the developer console to see if I could extract the data myself, but the 4 runs I can't get into Strava don't appear to have any GPS data. Even when I view them in the Nike website, there is no map for these 4 runs. All runs before and any runs since this period work fine and have synched with tapiriik.com to Strava. The 4 missing runs have the relevant splits etc - so I find it hard to believe that the watch recorded no GPS data... which leads me to believe there was a glitch in the Nike website around the time these runs were uploaded - unless it was just my watch not working properly. I'd be interested to hear if the runs you can't synch have a map when you view them in the Nike website? The problematic runs all fell in the period 27th March - 4th April. It might be that there was a bug in the system during this period causing the issues we are experiencing? Please let me know.

  • Question...I no longer use my Nike+ watch but did for several years. Therefore, about 3 years of my runs live on Nike+, even though I now have a Garmin. Using the transfer sites listed above, can I upload one time and be done with it? I just want to have PB's on Strava be real, and not just ones from the past year. Will one single upload do the trick or is it something I'll have to do again? Trying to decide if it's worth the time to get all my data living in one place.

  • Thanks Andi T - just tried that new exporter, but it just threw an error for me when I tried to download one of my runs:
    ErrorException in ActivitiesController.php line 43:
