Create a Strava Club for a specific bike type

I am a mountain unicyclist. There are many like me, and many others who ride long distance touring and other disciplines on a unicycle. We currently run into an issue with all unicycling clubs that we cannot keep accurate leaderboards, as if someone rides a unicycle or a bike, we only have 1 option, Bike. So all their bike rides show up on our leaderboard and ruin it for everyone, it's much easier to ride 50 miles on a bike than a unicycle, even a geared 36" uni...

The proposed idea is that when an activity is finished, and it is ready to be sent to Strava, that Strava would prompt us with a message similar to "Which clubs would you like to associate with this activity?"

That way our unicycle clubs could stay strictly unicycling, and people could still use their same account for cycling/running/etc as well.

This kind of system would be beneficial for EVERYONE, not just unicyclists. For instance, if I was a cyclist on a bike... but I rode both Mountain Biking AND road cycling, I might want to have 2 different clubs, one for each. But I wouldn't be able to separate my rides from each club without a system like I suggested above.

There could also be settings to make it easy for people who don't need this. Options like "Always post all activities to all clubs". Or you could associate a certain "bike" in the gear section with a specific club, and any activity with that specific "bike" would be linked to the club(s) of your choosing.

I love Strava, but it's really hard for some of us to use it to its max potential when it's limited by 2 categories. This kind of option would open up Strava to a much wider activity base. Kite surfers, paddle-boarders, windsurfers, skateboarders, snowboarders, skiers, surfers, in-line skaters, the list could go on forever. Will most of the data be accurate for us? No, but at least we could keep our community together and share our adventures. That's why I use Strava.

Thanks for reading!

Have a good one and ride safe,
-Dane

  • Dane, great idea. That would make keeping my rides separate a lot easier.

  • Thanks Dale for the idea, this would work great but i would be just a few strokes of their programmers to to add Unicycle to the page "Edit  your ride" their are 17 other items to filter their including Ride,Run,walk, hike, nordic ski, backcountry ski, ice skate, inline skate and so on for several more, so just add unicycle and it will seperate the rides instantly into our clubs. I tested it already using a walk function for a bicycle ride i did and it works, it just takes my bicycle rides out of my totals and displays differently.

  • Thanks Dale - great idea.  Doug's suggestion sounds good too and would be a really simple place to start.  Just sent Strava a suggestion about it.

  • Good idea Dane. Linking the bike/gear/mode of transportation to the club makes the most sense to me at first glance. It would solve the roadie/mtb issues I read about too.

  • OK - so I got a way cooler reply from Strava than I ever expected.  Sounds like they're working on it.

    From Strava:

First off... Thanks for writing in! I saw your name in the queue and figured as the only unicyclist in the company I should grab your ticket.

You're right that there are a number of activity types that could use a home on Strava. The issue is that these sports - unicycling, singlespeeds, tandems, recumbents, handcycles, etc., do require more engineering work than simply adding an activity type. We're aware of this hole and though I don't have any specific details at this time, we do hope to be able to provide a better experience for other activity types in the future. The only workaround that exists at this point is to filter segment leaderboards by members of your Unicyclists club; that way you should be able to see more exclusive results - although admittedly this isn't perfect because I'm guessing most of your unicyclists are also cyclists - and if they have ridden the same segments on two wheels - those efforts will also show up as there isn't a good way to exclude specific activities from 'belonging' to a club.

So, I know I don't have a great answer for you at this point - but we hope to improve this in the future... and thanks for your patience.

P.S. Here's me racing the Singlespeed Cyclocross World Championships on my uni: http://500px.com/photo/18887445

    Thanks again for your understanding.

  • That's much different than the response I got! I hope that the accuracy of data like average power, energy output, etc isn't the limiting factor in getting a solution for this. I really don't mind temporary fixes if it means our clubs would only show rides pertaining to it. I would never expect any app to estimate accurate unicycle data, I don't think  you can really.

  • I think we need to keep the pressure on to get Strava to approve our request. As you know it's been six months, and we still don't have a unicycle specific category. I wrote in and got a generic response asking me to search here.

  • I think it's worth connecting this thread with the comment I made a few weeks ago lined here: https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/21318843-Add-more-bike-types-like-Single-Speed-and-Track-Bike-?page=2#post_22565724

In order to have a club filter for a certain ride type, we first need tags to distinguish the different ride types. What do you think?

  • I'm trying to do the same thing - a winter turbo time trial club. All we need is a filter option when generating a club, so all it picks up are rides on a stationary trainer. I guess other types require additional tagging options but that cannot be difficult to implement.

  • I'd like to see more activity types, then I'd like it if clubs could set a default filter for those activities only.

    Example:

Unicycle clubs have their leader board to default showing Unicycle activities only.
Mountain Bike Clubs have their Leader board  defaulted to Mountain Biking only.
