Edit Distance for an Activity

Can we please have an edit mileage feature.  I use a garmin watch when running but it often does not pick up at the start of the run, sometimes for quite some time, and therefore despite me running 10 miles, it only logs 4!!! Can we have the ability to manually edit the mileage.  And then show on the logs that mileage was edited.

It would also be good to edit the course, and plot the actual route taken to check the distance run.

Many thanks

    Hello everyone,

No good news to report, yet, as this feature is not planned. However, I've recently included this feature request in a report as a strong recommendation for the development team at Strava to consider. I used some quotes from this discussion as well. I'm doing my best to relay the information here to be considered. Thanks for your continued feedback and comments.

  • I can see what you mean Mark! When the satellites don't lock on your Garmin, the Garmin can't record the GPS or distance accurately. What model Garmin do you have? The satellites should normally lock in about 30 seconds to 1 minute with a clear view of the sky.

You can also create a separate, manual entry to account for the missing distance that was not captured by your Garmin. We'll also consider your suggestion. Thanks!

  • It would also help to be able to edit the time.  For example, if the watch logs only 4 miles of a 10 mile run, presumably it logs the time only for those 4 miles.  What about the time for the other 6?

  • There seems to be a distance discrepancy between Garmin Connect and Stava. My mileage on Garmin Connect says 50.1 miles where Strava says 49.8. I'm disappointed that I can't chronicle my first half century in Strava. While I can edit in Garmin Connect, this feature isn't available in Strava and would be very useful!

  • Agree.  Strava needs a simple edit feature for a couple critical data attributes.  I'm surprised you cannot adjust the summary level distance and time attributes as can be done on Garmin Connect.

  • Yes, I'd like to edit "mileage" covered when on a turbo-trainer etc.

  • Couldn't stop recording on one of my rides. As a result I have excess mileage and other data. Can I edit this stuff out?

  • @Luis, you can try the Crop feature we have on the website - that can be useful in cropping excess data from the end of your activities.

  • This is also a problem when using a treadmill.  No way to connect the effort you did with the miles ran on a treadmill

  • Elle, thank you. That worked perfectly!

  • We still need the ability to adjust the time and the mileage of an activity not just crop the end.  Sometimes we also forget to start the gps or the battery dies but we want to adjust the workout to accommodate.  I can do this with Garmin Connect and SportTracks no issue but Strava cannot do.  So i have to use other software to track and plan my workouts since Strava is not accurate, yet?

  • Would one of you like to add this to the Feature Suggestion section of the Strava Support site? Right now, you can add a separate, manual activity to account for missing mileage that was not recorded with your Activity, but a way to add this right to the Activity page might be an improvement.

    Thanks!

  • I ran a world record 1:06. Yup, I'm that fast...according to Strava.

Did I miss an answer somewhere, is there a way to edit data after a run? It's hard to take the app seriously if the numbers are often extremely inaccurate.

I just want to edit miles and time. It would be a bonus if I could edit my route too. My last run looks like I ran up a trail and rode a zip-line back down. Three other guys on the same trail run had correct data, all using Strava (same cell provider, same phones), but not mine. So much for cups and trophies. This isn't the first time either, it has happened on many runs. Is there a way to edit or delete a bad-data run?

  • Hi Jim Jim - it does look like your GPS is having some trouble tracking you accurately. Please take a look at this article for some troubleshooting steps:

    Hope that helps!

  • I agree that there should be a way to edit the total mileage. I run with a Garmin 310XT and while it is quite an accurate GPS in my opinion, it simply cannot capture every single twist and turn with quick and multiple elevation changes that trail running often includes. Many of my trail races are run on courses that have been accurately wheel measured and will often be from 1/2 mile up to a couple of miles longer than what my Garmin says. While on the course, this results in at best having an educated guess as to what my pace is but after finishing, it results in me not getting full credit for how far I have run. When I have a PR in a half marathon, but my GPS only reads 12.4 miles, I don't get the credit for even having completed a half marathon much less PR'ing it. Please, Please, Please make this feature available.

  • I think I also have a similar problem.  I ran on my treadmill and recorded my heart rate on my Garmin.  When I uploaded the activity, everything is there except for the distance.

I can see how allowing distance editing could cause problems with calculating best times on real runs, but for a treadmill run you should just be allowed to manually edit all the fields.

Did anyone follow Elle's advice and put a request on the Feature Suggestion section?  I want to add some comments to it if you did.

  • Hi, I'm missing an option to edit recorder activity. I have some imported trainings from Runtastic to Strava which I'd like to edit due to missing part of training. I'm missing this simple option knew from Endomondo or Runtastic - edit millage and elapsed time. This is one&only functtion I'm missing in Strava.

  • IF a device battery dies, this is an absolutely essential feature to edit the mileage, I am missing 12 miles from today's ride..  Surely enough people have asked for this to warrant the inclusion of this feature??

Can you give us an update please Strava as it was being "considered" back in February?  Are we likely to see this or not?  If not, I'll move to a tracking app that caters for this as it is VERY annoying.

  • Marek and Chris - You can also create a separate, manual entry to account for the missing distance that was not captured by your device. Unfortunately, this is the best workaround we have currently!

Allan - the only way to record indoor distance while running is to have a footpod. Otherwise, Strava won't know how far you ran.

  • Yeah Chris Grunwell i too find it SHOCKING you cannot simply edit your file with summary information for tracking purposes even if the details are not the same.  All other software programs i've used have this simple ability but not Strava.  Very weird.  Adding another manual entry is just not a solution because then your number of rides/activities is over inflated so that is just silliness.  Completely annoying especially when the information is passed through to Strava as summary information in an edited Garmin TCX file clearing providing to Strava the information needed but Strava ignores.  So i am forced to use a different tracking software not Strava.  Strava is only good for social networking and challenges but i wouldn't use it to keep track of your time and distance because it only has limited functionality in this regard.  The solution is rather simple but i think Strava is overwelmed with other issues

  • The main reason why I dont understand the lack of this is that, it is possible to add manual activity and enter time, duration and distance. When I upload an activity from garmin watch without gps data, it already has time and duration, (and possibly HR) but no distance. This would be very very useful.

  • I agree, an option to edit time and distance when using stationary trainers (bikes/treadmills) would be very useful, we used to be able to do this and it worked well but now if I want my heart rate data (garmin) and distance/avg speed/time recorded on strava we have to add another activity manually. Why don't we go back to how it was, is there a specific reason for this?

  • The inability to correct GPS distance is keeping me from switching to Strava. If I run a race, my Garmin is often a bit off due to coverage etc. I want to be able to correct both the time to match the chip or clock time, and correct the distance to match the true race length. Putting in a manual entry is a horrible hack.

  • Adding a separate manual entry is not a good answer for indoor training activities.  We need the edit function.

  • Agree with all the above: need to have a correction / amendment tool; a separate manual is just what I wouldn't expect from such a good software as strava. Agree 100% with Daniel and Henro above.

  • This is the one feature that I am lacking which is stopping me from upgrading to a premium member.  I currently can do all my riding activities in Strava, but have to go back to using Garmin Connect for my treadmill running or else I will lose all my heart-rate data.

Can any Strava staff reading, let us know if there is any underlying issues which make this a complicated issue?  It seems to me that a simple submit form and a bit of database code is all that would be required....

  • I'm honestly shocked that entries cannot be edited! Those of us who use phones to track our runs sometimes run into glitches. I added a manual entry to make up for my battery dying last week, but today my phone gps was off by 1/2 mile for some reason. There's no way to reduce the milage. This can be done on every other app I've used. This is a BIG turnoff. Don't think I'll be using Strava anymore.

  • One more reason to be able to edit the time of the activity : the GPS i use is not known to strava = i import my data and re export a gpx file which i import into Strava.

The problem is that Strava seems to be using the export time of the gpx file as the start time of the activity = if my friends export their gpx file at a different time than me then Strava is unable to show that we were all riding in a group.

    Thanks
