Show moving time for indoor activites?

Strava only counts elapsed time for indoor activites, doesn't calculate paused time and shows the average speed wrong.

I rode 1 hour and 14 minutes on trainer. My moving time was 1 hour and resting time was 14 minutes, but Strava shows only elapsed time, not moving time. Because of that the average speed is seen 22.1 km/h on Strava, although it should be 27.4 km/h as seen on Garmin Connect.

Strava ID of the activity is http://www.strava.com/activities/112597758

Garmin ID of the activity is http://connect.garmin.com/activity/443750036

I've created a ticket and got the following reply from Strava Support.

This is something we are aware of and hopefully will change. However, since not all users ride with cadence sensors or power meters, we are not able to fully detect when users are moving. Sometimes they only use heart rate, so in this case we have no way of determining when the user is "stopped" or "moving".

However, this is a must have feature and the data is in Strava's hands as Garmin has all of it. It shouldn't be a big deal for Strava to distinguish the activities which have speed sensor data and which not.

I hope Strava adds this functionality soon.

  • Yeah it would be cool if strava could track this. My hour goal is getting messed up / is useless because it records total elapsed time. I've spent a bunch of time this week messing with my bike because my BB is making noise, so my trainer workouts have extra time tacked on. This also seems to be affecting my total kJ count from the power meter. Golden Cheetah reports 935 kJ while strava reports over 1200 kJ. Something is weird here

  • I have this same problem rode for 1 hr then had a 15 min rest then rode an extra hr which my vivoactive HR recorded as 2 hrs however after it was uploaded to strava, strava shows it at 2 hrs and 15 mins. Completely disrespecting my actual real time speed.

  • Same problem here when riding indoor. When I ride on the indoors track in my neihbourhood, I record my ride with my garmin edge 25, gps turned off and speed sensor on the back wheel. Garmin connect calculates my average speed based on the moving time. Strava only shows the total elapsed time and calculates the average speed based on that. Some printscreens of the same ride on garmin connect and strava in dutch.

"Verstreken tijd" = total elapsed time

    "tijd bewogen" = moving time
