Add Trail Running as a Run type tag

I want to be able to differentiate road running from trail. I'm flabbergasted that I'm the first to suggest this.

  • Strava Support - how about a response on this simple request that has been floundering out here 2.5 years?

  • Just started trail running, and bit amazed that I can't separate it from 'the usual' road running. Add please.

  • I email Strava support last week about the trail running feature and got this;

    Hi Mic,
Thanks for your feedback you're not alone in this request.
I think adding more tags for run types is a great idea, and something we'll consider.

So it's been over 2 years since the initial request, how about an update.

  • We have been asking for this since 2014 and strava admin has yet to add this or even comment. I doubt they even read these boards.

  • When will Trail Run be part of the drop-down - I'm amazed that this isn't an option.

  • Same with MTB vs road cycling. Should have been the first thing they did. Ave trail running speed is never the same as ave road running speed and shouldn't be compared to each other or lumped together.

  • I wanted to add that this morning I received another invitation from Strava to join a free 30 day premium membership trial. My reaction was like this - has Strava recognized Trail Running as a sport separate from running, has it addressed the moving time vs. elapsed time issue? No? Then I wouldn't even bother becoming a premium member. There is nothing in it for me worth paying for.

  • No trail running but you have e-bikes 🤔

  • Agreed...this is ridiculous that trail run hasn't been implemented yet as an activity. MTN bike vs road bike, all types of skiing, yet trail run can't be added? This thread has been active since I think 2014 with new request for this feature all the time, so it is obviously wanted by the community and important to us...if nothing else someone from Strava should chime in and give an update ...

  • So, let's see. There are 5 different ski activities, for example nordic ski vs. cross-country ski, and a lot of other exotic activity types. But somehow trail running is still not differentiated from road running.

  • And when adding Trail Running as a run type keep in mind that there are no stoplights on trails. Please use Elapsed Time for calculating the average pace just like you do for races.

  • Glad to see some passionate voices on this thread! Thanks @Kevin and @Stanislav for chiming in on the discussion. I agree that tagging and categorizing different run types would be hugely helpful. We'll be sure to consider your feedback with future developments.

  • I find it ironic that Strava is one of sponsors for Western States 100M, yet it doesn't recognize Trail Running as a sport.

Hey Strava, I considered becoming a premium member several times, but a complete lack of action or even communication on this and a few other issues is what keeps me from upgrading the service. In over two years that I've been the member I've seen no improvements in features that I care about and some regressions in functionality (like the infamous naming of all activities as morning, lunch, and evening runs). The only, really the only one feature of Strava that still makes it worthwhile is Segments. And even that is in dire need for improvements.

  • That is indeed interesting that Strava sponsors the Western States 100M when no one in that event can use Strava. This as every single activity there will come out all wrong with their so called "moving time" being the only option. I am still using Garmin Connect as at least there I can see the real time I spent on my activity. Strava cannot even get the basic functionality right.. I am surprised not more people making a noise about this, or maybe most have not noticed? Maybe because Strava takes the "total time" from the .fit file, but using their so called "moving time" in all stats/comparison which is all wrong and most people may not have noticed how wrong it is.

  • Strava is a joke. They couldn't care less about their user base. They for example rather spend hundreds and hundreds hours fine tuning their so called "moving time" algorithm that does it all wrong anyway, when no one even wants it in the first place. If I run for 45 minutes I would like it to show 45 minutes. That cannot be such a hard algorithm to figure out???

Please add trail running as a tag, but more importantly have elapsed time as an option. Moving time just doesn't make any sense and calculates it so badly it's not even funny.

I can only say if everyone start adding support tickets maybe they will notice? But prob not, as they don't even read those.

  • I'm not sure I agree with this addition. What do you call a run that is mixed trail and road? Many of my runs are mixed; I run across town to the hills and then go trail. So, I'd want the town segments to be compared against road runners, but the trail segments compared against the trail times. Or should all running segment types be lumped together? What about mixed segments? There's plenty of those about.

Furthermore, one person's off-road is another person's trail is another person's track. As someone else said, running is running, irrespective of the terrain.

One individual compared it to the 5 types of skiing. Well, there's only 4 types. Roller ski, nordic ski, back-country ski, alpine ski. The activity in each of those is completely different (alpine ski uses lifts to go up, backcountry is for hiking or skinning up and includes mountaineering), whereas running is always just running, maybe with some scrambling/climbing if you're really off-road, but it's still you in running shoes.

As for segment times; I thought moving time was only for the total run. Segment time is the total time from start to end including "non-moving" time. It must be, otherwise I could do a 1km segment in 10x100m sprints with 10 minute break between each sprint and smash the record.

The argument about moving time doesn't make sense to me, just select "race" and that should solve it.

I think this would be a bad addition, as it'll just confuse the segments.
