Award Segment Achievements for your Age Group

It would be a motivator if it was possible to achieve achievements for the over 40 crowd, right now it seems impossible and searching each segment by the leaderboard method with a age filter is too time consuming, it would be better if it showed in your profile highlights.   Maybe Award different colors in the trophy for age specific...RED, Green or Blue trophy.

  • great idea I am 56 and the area where I ride I am in the top three of most of the segments for my age group, but I can't get any koms as the young guys have them. For my age group I have quite a few but with no recognition.

  • Seems similar to my suggestion "Does Strava award Achievements for Segment results per Age Group?"

  • Yep it's the same as yours Tony, I give you the KOM for the suggestion...but it won't show up in your profile. I did my search on KOMs which was not in your thread, that is why I  added another suggestion, too bad because our votes are diluted in half.    I don't think us "seasoned" riders will ever get Strava to include this feature, since there aren't enough of us to vote on the suggestion versus all the young guns.   There are a ton of suggestions with over 30 likes, some over 200 likes, we got 5 now.   I have a friend that knows one of the developers at Strava here in the Bay area, maybe we can backdoor it, I don't think we will ever get in the front door.   It certainly would be another motivator for us, and hey, I think we need the motivation much more then a 30 year old in the prime of his physical strength....with no torn ligaments, no missing cartilage in the knees, no tendonistis in the forearms, no prostate problems, no ankle problems, no back problems....wow...this is scary, maybe I should stop riding so much!!!

  • To help encourage those of us no longer in our youth but fit for our age could an age related 'cup' be awarded to the best times riders post on a segment in their specific age categories not just overall male and female. e.g one may be 27th male overall on a segment, but 2nd fastest 55-64 yr old, but no maker is placed to show this achievement other than a PR on the day. So perhaps a '2nd' printed over a larger yellow '55' would look good.
This small icon would boost the achievements and morale of the older riders who can't compete with the young guns but do like to see how they fair with their peers. I hope others agree with this idea and Strava picks it up.
Great community website by the way.

  • At the age of 68, I'd very much welcome this feature, but how does Strava ensure that someone's age is correct?  I've got lots of segments where I'm some way down the 65+ leaderboard where it's quite obvious a number of those above me are 10, 20 or even 30 years younger than 65.  It would be a bit sad if all these people are lying about their age.  Or is it that if you don't enter a date of birth, Strava defaults you to 65+?

  • +1 Please add - nice to look after your athletes who are over 25!

  • Just 2 things...

    1. age category KOM's

    2. 5-year age grouping

That's all I (we) ask!  Please, oh, please!

  • As an over 55 I totally agree that there should be such a feature as trophies for age groupers.  Searching segments by age group is a poor choice for us more mature athletes

  • Couldn't agree more with all of this as a 57 going on 58. Age group KOM's is a no brainer surely!

  • If the aging-up of the Strava development team - or more postings on this obscure thread - are really what's required, that's a sad testament to Strava's marketing intelligence.  The majority of many cycling clubs are masters (true for both of mine).  The vast majority of people who dump disposable income into cycling goodies are masters.  Most of the masters I know aren't Strava Premium members because Premium doesn't offer features that they value.  They ALL know that there are no age-group KOMs in Strava, they ALL think there should be, but few of them think that message-board activism might fix that.

Businesses that are successful - long-term - don't wait for their customers to beat their doors down and explain to them how to get their money.  They actually put some effort into figuring out what their *paying* customers (and potential customers) want.

  • Hear hear and ditto to all the above comments - it is the same for us women too - I can't believe Strava is being so short-sighted in not listening to the comments of their more mature members, I guess it's up to us to keep sharing this link and getting as many as possible to 'like' it.  Perhaps they might eventually get the message.... after all, just because we're older, doesn't mean to say we don't have any determination, incentive, competitiveness and goals - does it Michael M?! ;)

  • again here here, creating several levels of KOM/achievement by including age group (or even weight class) would be of great benefit to older riders and increase the value of strava for PREMIUM subscribers (if you are not premium, you cant see age class and therefore could make that component of achievement not visible),  and help people strive for new goals as their body slows and create more opportunity for achievement.  There are many times on segments while out of the top 10, an effort can still be KOM or well in the top 10 in a particular age class

    surely its not that hard?

  • I agree with this as well. It's no fun to have really good times for my age group and not have that recognized as an achievement. This also ties in with my other request that I should be able to set a default filter (actually a set of filters so you can filter by location as well as age/weight, etc) that would be the default setting for all segments, or anywhere these filters are able to be chosen..

  • At 67 -- and reasonably competitive -- I'd vote in favor of age grouping.

  • Thanks for all the feedback folks! Much appreciated. We're currently in development around the segment leaderboards, and how we filter and organize the data to present in the most meaningful way. Your comments will be shared with the team!

  • While you're at it, why not have age/weight group appear on the apps, Android in my case. I'm a 71 year old Clydesdale. Maybe a handicap ?? ;)

  • KOM's & cups for premium groups.

Before I was aware of this forum I wrote to Strava with the following suggestion. Strava replied indicating I should add it as an 'idea' in the 'suggest a new feature section'. Now I can see others have had similar thoughts so rather than start a new 'idea' I thought it would be better added here:

Given the use I make of Strava I think it probably deserves my financial support by me taking out premium membership. However as Strava allows the enjoyment of certain aspects of its site without charge there is not anything that Premium membership currently offers that makes me commit to a subscription.

However there is a change I would like to suggest that would make me instantly take out premium membership (and possibly a great many others as well).

I would like to see KOM's & cups show on activities and in user profiles for those groups that are available when taking out premium membership (age and weight classes).

In other words when a top ten is achieved by a member in his or her age or weight class then as long as that member has paid for premium membership, a crown or cup should appear in the normal activity segment list. If the member hasn't paid premium then only the usual cups and crowns for overall placings would appear. The graphics for the age and weight class can be made to indicate which sub group the cup or crown is awarded for, i.e. the cup or crown for 45-54 years age group could have a plinth underneath with 45-54 inside. If a 60 year old in the 165-179 lbs groups was the best on a segment for his or her age and weight they could have 2 crowns side by side (as well of course as the usual overall crown if they happen also to be the fastest overall on a segment).

This is something I would readily Premium subscribe to receive.

  • One of the greatest attributes/strengths of the Strava program is to add motivation. By adding age category KOM's for all segments, it would add great motivation to a large # of us. Competing with people in your own age group to get the KOM would raise the fitness for all of us. Please consider!!!

  • Hear hear Edward Debussy - I have just down-graded my account from premium to standard in support of this and all other suggestions.  I provided the link to this forum as my reason for doing so. Maybe EVENTUALLY someone who can properly take this on board will do something about it instead of fobbing members off by suggesting they add it as an 'idea'.

How many 'ideas' does it take?

Meanwhile, if more members downgrade, perhaps they'll get the message?  Just a thought.....

  • I fully agree with Ed Debussy's comments re the worth of taking out a premium subscription currently. Come on Strava, lets not discriminate on age or size for that matter - share the love..

  • I totally agree, I am 48 and have no chance of taking a KOM off a 19 year old, but on several segments I am first in my age group. If strava catogorise riders into age groups then the least they can do is have a KOM for each of the age groups, it wouldnt take a lot would it !!.

  • Steve, I like your graphic and that is exactly what I had in mind to differentiate KOM's/QOM's of the overall leader with the leader from each of the sub groups that Strava currently provides. I also wouldn't mind if the trophy's were a different colour (instead or as well) as David suggested at the beginning.

Something I find interesting (and a little bit annoying) is that when any Strava member tries to filter for age or weight and they don't have Premium membership they get a graphic on the screen showing a golden crown for the sub group effort (copy of graphic attached). Clearly therefore Strava must think sub group leaders are worthy of crowns or is this just a 'hook' to try to get people new to Strava to subscribe to premium only to discover they don't get any trophy for a top place?

Strava deserves a great deal of credit for the facility it provides. Nevertheless the success of the enterprise rests on the fact that human beings have ego's (which makes people try harder - mostly a good thing with associated physical/health benefits). This applies as much to people trying to make their mark in a sub group as it does to the overall leaderboard. As for the business model I would expect the effort and financial cost to the company of producing the necessary code/software to include trophy's for sub groups would be very significantly outweighed by the income from increased premium membership take up.

Perhaps Strava could take a poll by messaging members on this (and other improvements members have suggested) to see what the response is like.

  • Yes its something that should be looked at by strava. I work in IT with databases/developing applications and I know all the info is there and it would be relatively simple to show calculated KOM per age group. There are LOTS of areas I see that strava could be improved for the benefit of everyone and better support those of us that are either continuing or have just started cycling at should be say a riper age ;).

I have attached some mocked up ideas where the interface could be updated to accommodate these sub KOM.in the last "my segments" section I also think the addition of your age group KOM time and your current position indicated overall/age group  E.G. 136/23 would be beneficial.

This is a real one of my segments and you can see overall I am 5th out of 463 yet I am 1st in my age group with ZERO recognition or even any indication to anybody unless they click the filter by age group sidebar.

Ive only been cycling 6months and Strava has helped me a great deal with comparing my times to help improve, but I have no chance of getting an overall KOM on that segment as the leader is only in his mid 20's.

I believe this single overall KOM classification is in a lot of ways ageist !!

  • Perhaps I should get out and ride my bike a bit more but I liked the general direction Steve's ideas for improved graphics for sub group KOM’s is going so I played around with this as well. If it is ever to happen, then I would like to see sub group leader recognition on the ride/run activity page and on the member’s KOM/QOM, CP page - within the ‘athlete’s’ individual ‘My Profile’ section of the website. I attach a couple of examples of how this might be laid out on the relevant pages.

Also, in response to Steve’s suggested graphic for Segment Leaderboard pages - showing appropriate sub group recognition, it seems to me this would need to represent all sub groups to be fair, particularly as it would be a Premium paid for item. My third attached example attempts to lay this out fully on an imagined Leaderboard page. It is a bit crowded and there are plenty of other ways it could be displayed in less space, i.e. drop down menus, etc. In my example, if a leader in a particular sub group chose not to pay for Premium membership then that particular sub group entry would simply remain blank.

I am interested to read responses to Tony Love’s suggestion "Does Strava award Achievements for Segment results per Age Group?" but I cannot find it. Can anyone help point me in the right direction? Thanks.
