Ability to Set Private Goals

I would like to have a "private/public" option for goals.  When I set goals I don't necessarily want anyone else to be able to see them.  Having goals is part of my training which I prefer not to share.

  • Yeah, David, it almost feels like it's a philosophical decision like, "This is a social platform so goals must be public." It certainly can't be because they are unable to do it. If so, scary. I have to keep an Excel doc with my goals on them, just like I did before I came over to Strava.

  • I am commenting here just to add another voice back to Strava requesting that goals have a privacy option.  No need to say why as the reason has been repeated here multiple times and I completely agree.

I wonder how many people have to make this request Strava before you will actually prioritize it since we are your paying customers.

  • +1 from me. Please add option to create a private goal.

  • Now that Strava heat maps are potential national security risks, are you going to consider making ALL public features toggle privacy/public...like goals? I can see a big law suite here, especially since this type of feature has been requested for for years while Strava ignores it.

  • I vote for having the ability to make goals private as well.

I would think the motivation behind keeping goals public is due to the social nature of Strava being what drives it’s success.

  • @Mark Sinnot

I agree with your comment about the goals but I have a wahoo bolt and I can chase my PRs or goals. There is no option to chase a 'rival'...maybe this is a difference between wahoo and garmin rather than a Strava issue.

  • I'd like to add my support to this request.  When I set a goal, it's a personal goal, I don't need/want it splashed on the activity feed dashboard.  It should be my choice, just like I currently have the choice to make a route public/private.  I'd saying making a goal private is MORE important/valuable than making a route private.

Mahalo ElleA for bringing this up 4 years ago. I hope the Strava development team are re-assessing this on their priority list of features.

  • I may follow Derek J. (and never set a segment goal again until this is fixed).

Last time canceling Pro/Summit to undo the "PR achievement on first segment attempt" seemed to have worked. $$ talk.

  • Your comment falls completely on deaf ears. This thread is over four years old, Strava obviously does not give two shots about what it's users want or need. If they did this would have been fixed years ago.

  • Why not give the people what they want?  You already have logic in the app to filter content based on private/public... how hard could this actually be to add it to goals?

I personally do not use this feature, but would like to.  The only thing currently stopping me is that I don't want others to know my private goals.

Strava is supposed to be a training tool to help you improve... and many people have stated that they will not use this feature until it allows non-public goals.  Let the users decide how they want their data shared, and do what you can to help everyone use the goals feature.

If a user wants to publicly challenge another user, they can challenge them.... like I challenge you to break my time.  If I privately want to set a goal to beat a better rider, I should be able to set a PERSONAL goal.

  • Strava, please get with it and implement private goals. [Strava Premium User going on two years.]

  • Wow, is this a joke ?, I've just bought a Garmin 520 and upgraded my Strava to allow me to use live segments, spent an evening going through all my regular rides & set myself 50+ goals on segments I ride regularly only to then see the whole lot appear in not only my activity feed but also that of the friends who follow me !!.

Even putting aside the privacy aspect, which I get is a genuine concern for a lot of people although it doesn't bother me, this renders the activity feed next to useless not only for me but for my followers who now have to scroll through several pages of irrelevant rubbish to see their own rides alongside mine !!, I've yet to do a ride since I added these goals so I don't know what else will get put on the feed, will I return home after my next ride to several posts along the line of :

'Craig failed miserably to beat one of his goals' ??

We have the option to make rides or training sessions private which makes it even more ridiculous that goals can't be made private.

I've been using Strava for 3 years now and on the whole found it very good, I've had a few minor gripes but as I wasn't paying to use it I've never bothered pushing any of them but now I'm a paying customer I expect some level of service and find the fact that Strava has not attended to this issue despite numerous paying customers raising it over several years utterly unacceptable.

Strava - isn't it about time you made another 'official' comment on this thread, even if it's only to tell us all to f*** off !!!

  • It's a bit corny when people threaten to unsubscribe if they do not get what they want, but yesterday I was notified about updating the credit card to pay annual subscription ... but decided to wait. Premium does not have so many advantages. Goals had been something to pay for, but I do not use Goals just because it's not possible to put it privately.

As a comment to Strava's comment at the top of this thread, the problem is just that the Goals becomes Social... and we don't want that :)

  • If a feature doesn't make Strava more money they don't prioritize it. Plain and simple.  Maybe when a developer gets bored they'll eventually get to this.

  • Hej Strava do you listen? I have set goals now, but I DID NOT WANT FOLLOWERS TO SEE THEM. Privacy option, PLEASE!

  • I'm glad I'm in a trial period. This was the only reason why I wanted to try strava premium. Let's face it, the other premium features are available on other apps/services for free.

I would love to set my own personal goals but I'm afraid I don't want the whole world to know. When you've sorted this out strava I may sign up for a paid account.

  • Between the inability to set private segment goals, and the inability to change the default setting on live segments (to chase my PR instead of someone ahead of me) I am doubtful I will renew my Premium membership once the free trial period ends.

What a joke, and a complete lack of value, from Strava.  They truly do not give a crap.

  • I totally agree that there should be the option to make goals private. This is an essential feature, and the public nature of posting goals prevents me (a paying customer) from using it.

I can see how Strava - from a business perspective - wants social features to be shared as widely as possible.

Maybe the current Facebook privacy debate will make Strava rethink their strategy a little bit.

  • I fully support the request for users to make goals private if they so choose. It is to say the least disappointing that the issue has been open for 4 years without action.

Given the privacy travails of other social  networks, it is perhaps time for Strava to have a rethink.

  • Big +1 for this feature. I enjoy many of the social aspects of this platform, but would rather share my achievements than my intentions.

  • ... update to above.

It's even worse than I thought, as reported my 'followers' have got all my goals in their activity feed when viewed through the website but on their phone apps they can't see my goals in the 'following' feed but they now can't see any rides recorded before I added my goals either.

Strava - I thought you were all about the 'community' ?, because through no fault of my own I've caused my own little community a problem so please get back on track on sort this out !!!!!

  • ... further update to above.

So it turns out that it wasn't my fault after all, it's the latest update to Strava that has broken the 'following' feed in the mobile phone app and nothing to do with me adding my goals, it just coincidentally happened at exactly the same.

    From the update notes :
v129.0.0 (r19810) Bug fix - the bug that was preventing the following feed from not working properly has now been fixed.

So as you were re this thread, PRIVATE GOALS PLEASE !!!, it seems you have enough time on your hands to break things that were working fine maybe you could take a few minutes to address a genuine issue that has been upsetting a lot of paying customers for a very long time.
