  • Just upgraded to premium, thinking it would have voice navigation, but no! The route and map "premium" features are pretty useless without turn-by-turn voice navigation.. Disappointed!

  • Pretty disappointing to learn that this common sense feature is not part of this app. Especially when the #1 competitor, MapMyRide, has this feature as part of their offering. Considering cancelling my premium membership and switching to them  which is sad because I really love STRAVA and completely bought in until I learned that there was no audio turn-by-turn. Who is or can be looking at their phone while riding? lol sounds like more of a liability than anything audio turn-by-turn could present.

  • Since Strava already delivers turn by turn by turn on the web, they'd just need to grab that data and feed it to iOS/Android TTS API's, no? Seems lazy that this wasn't just done automatically when the routes feature was launched. http://code.tutsplus.com/tutorials/create-a-text-to-speech-app-with-swift--cms-22229

  • A voice and screen navigation would be a great premium feature. But first things first: i would be helped with an optional first person view in the map screen. So not always north in the upper side of the screen but the upper of the screen set as the direction i'm currently riding. An additional 3d-flattening effect would do the trick to be able to see further ahead and make navigation easier. Furthermore: the route is not automatically linked to your current position. Combining or integrating these two things is necessary to make real navigation possible i guess...

  • For the OSMAnd experience - I used it in the "Follow the GPX course" mode with no display (only sound from my pocket) and here are some things I've noticed:

    1) It does not use earplugs and still using speaker so it is difficult to hear. Even on the highest volume it is not enough loud.

    2) I often miss the beginning of the command - it would be handy if it caught my attention some time before it says the command (some beep, pre-command, or simply repeat the command twice)

    3) It does not get you back to the course if you miss the turn and (I even don't expect) it recalculates the detour

    4) Killer function would be, if I can make it somehow say "Now follow the BLUE trail" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trail_blazing#Gallery)

  • Hi, I wanted to mention one desepción I had with the application. While the very good meeting. I created a route through the computer, and then take out from the cell of course also with my bike. He hoped the cell or application rather telling me out the way I had to continue to go along the route created, something or rather as it does Waze (voice commands: turn izquierde, turn right etc.). If you include this improvement, the application would be perfect, because ultimately it is no use creating a route. Thanks hopefully read and take into account my request.

  • RunGo RunGoApp.com now allows you to import GPX files (iOS only) and Create your own routes within the app. We hope to add Strava support soon. This does everything you guys are asking for, and if you like you can use both Strava and RunGo together, we designed RunGo to play nice with other running apps.

  • I agree that the added value of selfmade routes in practice doesn't mean so much. I can't imagine running and regularly watching my smartphone. Besides the risk of damage the fun and relaxation of running vanishes when my attention is asked by my electronics.
Why doesn't Strava buy a license from TomTom, Garmin or other party until they have enough manpower or money to invest in this voice-guide functionality.

  • This is a feature I would gladly play the premium membership price for.

  • Totally agree with everyone but don't actually understand why it's not available. I was just looking at options to combine a couple of apps I have, since I like the SATNAV app from Skobbler/ Scout.

    See this: http://www.marketwatch.com/story/scout-launches-the-first-global-navigation-sdk-based-on-openstreetmap-that-is-available-to-any-developer-2014-05-19

The GPS app that I use, which has turn by turn voice direction, is apparently the key map API that is being used by Strava ... so I truly don't understand, unless there was a much heftier price tag for voice commands, why it isn't able to be integrated already? Ideas anyone?

  • We have tested using Stava with RunGo, you can run both apps at the same time if you like and get turn-by-turn directions from RunGo, and also log your run with Strava. We plan to add Strava login later so you will be able user your Strava routes in with RunGo. RunGo is free if you want to see what running with turn-by-turn directions is like.

Also creating a Turn-by-Turn directions system for running routes if very hard to do, the current direction systems are for A-B, runners often do weird stuff like out and backs, and loops, even multiple loops. We had to build an entire navigation system from scratch to make it work, and there are still some cases where its not perfect.

You can download RunGo at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/rungo/id712628644 for iPhone or https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rungo for Android

  • I just use the RidewithGPS website and app for planning routes and navigation out on the bike. Then when the ride is finished upload to Strava. That way you get the best of all worlds; the best route planning, the best navigation (although it's not perfect) and the best website to record rides, segments and for comments and kudos.

No need to use the Strava app itself.

  • At this point, after all the discussion around the subject, I'm convinced that this feature will never be added due to the Strava relationship with Garmin.

  • I just gave my money to Ride With GPS.   Turn by Turn voice navigation ROCKS!  Sorry Strava, you lost my money on this one.

  • The latest version of OSMAND can do customizable turn by turn voice notications.  You can for example set it to repeat voice commands every x minutes (great for those long uninterrupted stretches).  It can also record your whole trip and save it to exportable gpx.  The built-in customizable navigator immediately reroutes you if you miss a turn or make an unplanned turn.  It does not need an internet connection and works perfectly offline. This was recently ported to the iPhone after years of being an Android only app.  Not sure if they have the same features though.

  • I am a Strava premium member and love the app but I want turn by turn directions. Many group rides are created in "Ride with GPS" and I downloaded that app and have been using turn by turn directions which is nice but it also is a premium expense. I hope Strava comes out with this because I purchased a Quad Lock to mount my phone on my stem and prefer to say with Strava but may have to switch for the turn by turn navigation because I don't want to pay for duplicate services.

  • I think the reason strava have never implemented this is because of their recent agreement with garmin.

This is never going to happen now.

  • Please take a look at RunGo, we are going to add support to import strava activities later this year. It has voice turn by turn directions and is free. You can also import GPX files via email http://itunes.com/rungo

  • No, I do not think that is the reason. I came to this post, because I suggested the topic on facebook Strava and they sent me here ... probably are studying implement it and see if it is requested by its users

  • Thank you Craig Slagel!  After reading some of the other comments here I installed RunGo and have been using it with great success.  I'm primarily using it for mountain biking and it's great for exploring new trails!    However, trying to create a "route" on my iphone can be difficult at times because of the small(er) screen. I tried to install RunGo on my iPad and it does not allow me (shows "device is not supported" error in iTunes.)   While we wait for the "import" feature to be added, is there a way to build routes in RunGo  via a webpage (e.g. larger display)?

  • La Montaña Bici, you can import a GPX file but just emailing it to your phone, then open in RunGo (on ios) and we are working on our website but it may be a few more months until its ready. If you have any other questions or feature requests to email me at craig@rungoapp.com. You can make export GXP file from most route creators like the one on the Strava website.

  • Would love turn by turn directions and of course re-routing and cue sheets with Strava!

I was using OSMand+ using voice navigation and it worked great, especially with the latest version. However I wanted a Garmin alternative that has navigation and was thinking about using the Wahoo RFLKT so I tried the subscription based RideWithGPS since it has navigation and works with the RFLKT . . . Well I got really lost on a big ride trying to navigate with RideWithGPS. I got lost again today with it.

I'm going back to using OSMand+ and Strava together. I've never got lost with OSMand+.  I just wish I could get navigation on the Wahoo RFLKT, that with OSMand+ and Strava would be great. Better yet, have Strava do it all!

  • With turn-by-turn my rides would be great and strava would be IT!!!  Right now I do some machinations and use co-rider app and have them both on (Strava and Co-Rider) when I ride.
