Strava Widget for Routes: Imbed a Strava Route in a website/blog

This is a suggested feature for Strava to build a widget so that Strava Route data can be imbedded in external websites like personal sites and blogs. This would be useful in planning an event or group ride, as well as sharing maps and good run/ride routes outside of the Strava website. The widget could be similar to the current Activity Widget that Strava created for an individual activity.

  • My request is that the current widgets are not the desired outcome, as they redirect you from where the Strava widget is embedded and you are routed to the Strava site. Specifically.... I want to embed the tiling Google or Apple Map with my ride overlay (including the start and finish icons) into my domain. This is not rocket science, embedded maps and videos are found all over the Internet. Add a Strava icon/link to the UI, so these maps get some exposure on other domains.

  • This is a great widget for all Club webmasters out there like me. Additional feature to this would be to provide a thumbnail when i share the Route Link on my Club's facebook page.

  • Confused? Are you providing a link to a great widget or are you suggesting a feature request?

  • I'm commenting on the OP's feature inquiry - widget for embedding routes on webpages/blogs. The thumbnail for facebook is just a configuration of the route page itself, allowing me to see the route on an image either from the club website or from the club fb page. These are related features.

  • 10-4. Let's hope for an "Embed in your website" option someday.

  • This is a feature that was supported in the past but no longer.

There are some opportunities to iframe pages like

    http://app.strava.com/routes/9537

    http://app.strava.com/routes/9537/cue_sheet

I'd like to be able to embed strava routes in club and community pages to help riders find routes and trails.

  • It would be a great widget. When a club organise an event/ a race, to show the route you need :

-Google maps to show the route on your website.

-Openrunner to show the profile, with the D+

-Strava to have the gps extract available through a link.

If we could embed the route we'll use one tool for everything and it will give strava a good advertisment on every club that organise race/event.

  • Thanks Gordon - we really appreciate the feedback from all of you!

This is on our list, but no plans in place yet.

  • I would definitely appreciate a route embed feature. I'm the organizer of a non-profit sports event in the SF Bay Area (wipeout-cancer.org), which includes a 50k and 100k bike route. I would love to embed the Strava routes on our website. I suppose a workaround is to create a segment for the entire route, and then use the segment embed code?

Since the route embed feature was not available, I used the embed feature from ridewithgps.com instead. But, I much prefer Strava's design and ease of use. Please make the code public.

  • I agree with everyone who has commented - this would be a great tool and also great advertising for Strava. I am organising a charity bicycle ride and would like to embed the Strava Map into our web site. Currently I have a static image of the Strava page with a link to Strava. Not ideal!

  • Still waiting for this embed feature. The development team has been slow to respond. Would like to hear why this has not been implemented?

  • I keep beating the drum for the embed route map on personal websites. It would be great if a Strava programmer would step and commit to this easy request or tell us honestly why not.

  • Thanks for letting us know, Elle, but is it still on your list like you previously stated? This feature would really let me add great content on my website, and doesn't seem to hard to pull off. Hopefully you will start developing it soon!

  • I would like to again add my little bit of encouragement for the people at Strava to develop this feature - i am certain it would be used by many people on many sites. I am a member of a Vets cycling club and they list our route as a map for each week and it is quite poor compared to what an interactive Strava map would be. And I state again that it would be brilliant advertising for Strava. So I will say as others have "Come on Strava - get this at  least on the list of developments to implement". As a programmer, I can't see how it would be too hard to develop. Tell me if I am wrong.

  • Yes Please !!!!!!

Strava has an opportunity to become the standard go to on any website for routes/gpx files for any cyclist, weather they are or not a strava user.

If people are not a strava user already they soon would be... best FOC advertising, get us to embed you on our websites.

  • yes please!  Organising a charity ride, all the routes are completed in Strava but need to direct the participants to a link which then takes them to Strava.  So much easier to have it in the website directly.

  • I don't think the Strava programmers agree with us on the map embed idea. I hope every Strava update brings us web folks a surprise but most of the recent new features have seemed like more data over load. I don't think the embed thing will happen in our lifetime.

  • yes yes yes, I am currently rebuilding my bike tour website and want to continue to use Strava as my main resource for map building. If a widget/iframe could be embedded to make sharing routes and downloading TCX/gpx files easy, that would be great!

  • BUMP! Big BUMB! A widget that can be embedded into a site is like a billboard for Strava, free marketing by active users. Why isn't this happening?

  • This would be a great feature.

I've had to create an account with Ride with GPS purely to able to embed routes on my club forum. As have many other members of the club.

  • I have also moved to Ride with GPS to use their ability to embed their maps into my websites. A pity that Strava misses out on the free publicity.

  • I think this should be reasonably easy to achieve using the Strava API. I will take a look when I get the chance

  • Give this a go, https://www.doogal.co.uk/StravaRoute.php

It requires some polishing but let me know if it's what you're after, or any feedback at all

  • Thanks Chris for putting in the time to develop this third-party widget that is useful. I added it to our club's website. I hope you keep the script going.

If it could be added down the road, it would be helpful to see mile markers on the route. When the Start and End point is in the same location, it's hard to tell the direction of the route. That was one of the benefits when Strava allowed you to embed their pages as iframes because you could run your mouse along the elevation chart and a marker would go along the route. Perhaps, if the API allows for it, you could do what Garmin Connect does with the mile marker feature (see page).

    Thanks again.

  • Hi Chris

    Thanks for providing this.

It is close to what I was looking for but I think what we are asking for on this page is for Strava to do provide something themselves.

Comments on what you have done:

I got a cookies message which was off-putting

The iframe was not displaying at the right size with the embedded code that was produced. I had to add width and height properties to the iframe tag to get it to display full screen. Then the height of the map and elevation were such that they couldn't be seen together.

There were not the same features as are available on the Ride with GPS embedded map that I am now using. I am quite happy with it and so Strava have missed out on an opportunity to get some free exposure.
