"Beat Yourself" or "Beat a Friend" real-time audio coaching

This is one of, if not the most, effective training feature that I use, and value immensely.  It has shaved considerable time off of my efforts.

I'll start off by saying that I love Strava.  That said, I am still running two training apps side-by-side when I train (only because Strava doesn't currently have the "beat yourself" feature).  For this feature, I run Endomondo at the same time as Strava.  There is no question that Strava does everything else better.

The functionality that I would love to see Strava add is the ability to race agains yourself in real time  (I would be happy if they just added the same "Beat Yourself" and "Beat a Friend" functionality from Endomondo, but I have no doubt that Strava would probably even make this feature better).

THE "BEAT YOURSELF" FEATURE allows you to select a segment that you or someone else has already run/biked, and race against that effort.  You can select the parameters around how you receive real-time audio feedback.  For example, you can receive feedback every xx miles, or every xx minutes.  The audio feedback will tell you (in-real time) how your current effort is stacking up against the prior effort that you selected for that segment.  For example, I often run a time-trial route up a local mountain.  I will select my PR on this segment to race against, then I'm off.  The audio coach will tell me every 2 minutes, how I am doing relative to my PR - e.g., "You are 10 seconds ahead of your PR."  Talk about motivation!  You can also set the audio coach to tell you other helpful statistics such as lap pace, speed, elevation gain, etc...

This type of feature has been the best training feature that I've used and I would be very grateful if Strava would add this incredibly valuable feature.

Sincerely,

Justin F. (Boulder Colorado)

  • Yes, this would be a great feature to add and would certainly aid in my training.

  • The adroid app Ghostrider, in conjunction with Strava, provides this functionality.
Take care though. I don't encourage or condone racing on public roads.

  • Any idea if this will be included any time soon Strava?

  • Hi folks,

We currently have this feature in place for Premium members:

"Once you have enabled Real-Time Segments, Strava will notify you upon completion of popular segments or segments you have created. If you are premium, you can star segments and Strava will tell you when you start and finish - and also give you performance information during the starred segment."

I believe this address part of this feature suggestion, in that you can receive audio updates during a segment that compares you to your PR or the KOM/QOM.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

  • Hi Elle, thank you for the response.  I have starred segments, and I do not see any way to receive periodic updates during my run.  I believe that this is feature is not available on any iOS device?  Is this accurate?  If so, do you know when this functionality will be updated/included for the iOS app version?  Also, it would be much more helpful if there were options in settings to allow for more flexibility and control over the functionality of this feature (like there is in Endomondo) - e.g., frequency of audio feedback during run, what is actually provided as audio feedback (e.g., time vs. pr, lap time/rate, avg time/rate per mile, total duration, distance, calories, total elevation, etc...).  Thank you for looking into this.  Best Regards,  Justin

  • Cameron and Justin,

Does this article help explain how the feature works? https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/41374250-A-Guide-to-Real-Time-Segments

We don't have many options for customizing the the audio announcements. For runs, we only have distance and average pace. Thanks for your feedback that you'd like to see more flexibility going forward.

  • Hi Elle,  Thanks for the response.  I tested this again yesterday, and while I like many features on Strava, this one misses the mark by a very wide margin.  I do hope you guys expand this functionality in the near future.  Thank you.

  • Thanks Justin, if you have any more specific feedback (besides what you posted above about customizing the audio announcement experience) please share.

  • I tried out the new audio updates today, but unfortunately it has missed the mark and I've turned it off. Furthermore I just don't see any point in paying for premium anymore. The feature I wanted was regular (would be good if it could be changed such as every minute, or some other time interval, or every kilometer, or some other distance interval) updates on how far ahead or behind your best time you are. Another added feature would be to compare to other riders, such as friends or KOM's. I imagine the voice would say "ahead 3.6 seconds" or "behind 8.3 seconds". It seems to do this a fetcher might need to be added allowing a rider to specify what segment they are about to ride so Strava knows what to compare against on the fly.

The feature that has been added, telling you what your segment time is, has know benefit at all, other not needing to pull your phone out and have a look. In fact it is bloody annoying as in some places there are several different segments all finishing at one place, in which case Strava talks over your music for a few minutes while it reels everything off. One that front it would be better if it paused the music stream while speaking, then started it again when it finished,

  • Any update on this post? If this functionality is not available, I will switch to another app cause it's too important for me.

  • Same here - I am considering dropping strava premium because of this missing feature.

Why can't we just save an activity - then compete against ourselves on that activity ?

Segments are too small  for that need and i don't really care about others on that segment.

If the run is a 20k - i would love to see in Real-Time if I am ahead or behind my Personal Record -for that route - and not for that segment.

Thank you Strava to make this happen....

  • I totally agree with @Arnaud L.

Save the route you just ran.

Next time out, select that route --- Choose to go against PR.

Audio cue only needs to be a simple --- "You are currently 10 seconds slower than your PR".

If you can select the route you save and use that before setting off on your run, then surely all that is required is for Strava to use the saved PR times and audio cue those.

Strava would be complete for me if this functionality was available. There is no better competition than competing against yourself IMO.

    Got to make it happen.

  • It's now been over 4 years since I posted this original comment/question/request.  I would have thought that this would have been an easy to implement enhancement.  I totally get the liability issues, so just limit the functionality so you can race against yourself - that is the best training tool anyway.  I really wish someone from Strava would reply to this chain and let us know why this is not a desirable enough feature to make it onto their radar.  Can someone from Strava please respond?  PLEASE....

  • Both myself and a lot of friends are in the same boat. To compete against myself is THE most important feature for me to push a little extra and improve results. I really hope someone from Strava could answer asap...
