Support Aero Velomobiles or Rocket bikes on Strava

In the Netherlands, we have a lot of people who are doing their rides with a rocket bike: http://www.velomobiel.nl/ In terms of aerodynamics and times they have a big advantage, is it possible to add a category for so named Rocket / Aerodynamic bikes, because they are ruining the cycling rankings in the Netherlands.

Kind regards, Bjørn Leerkes

  • That's it for me aswell. I have been a Pro member up to date but see no more use in Strava other than sinking my money into it. Promises have been made and broken. We're obviously not welcome.

As a consequence of that I will not only cancel my pro membership but delete my account all together.

I'm sick of Strava letting paying customers stand in the rain.

  • @Travis Robison: Hope is not a strategy. Please do make a plan to add Velomobiles category and let us know when ready. Should not be too difficult. It is similar to the e-bike category. I will upgrade to full license then and buy your product on a monthly basis. :-)

  • Strava Support just submitted this message on the Liegeradforum club:

Hello, I'm from Strava Support. Please note that any activity performed while using a velomobile should use the activity type "Workout" or be made private and can not be marked as a standard bike ride according to our policy and outlined in our article, which is linked to below. This policy is in effect to protect the integrity and fairness of our segment leaderboards.

    https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/21691...

Any activity that is marked as a ride, but performed in a velomobile is subject to being flagged. Continued violation of the above mentioned policy may lead to the termination of a Strava account. We appreciate your cooperation in advance. Please submit a support ticket if you have any questions about this policy.

In the future, we do hope to add an activity type for velomobiles although we currently have no plans to do so.

    My answer was:

This is contradicting to say the least. You write about fairness and integrity but fail to provide the means to let velomobiles take part in a fair way by year after year denying a velomobile activity type. This has fuelled a nasty struggle between road cyclists and velomobile riders and is most probably the reason you are trying to shove us away from Strava. We did not seek this struggle, we only wanted to use the fantastic Strava functionality as it was intended. Making our rides private or work-out is simply not acceptable as the functionality is lost. We cannot even use the club rankings when our rides are set to work-out or private. It is very disappointing that Strava is not doing the right thing. You even provided an e-bike activity type and suggested we should use that. I'm glad that at least you do not suggest that anymore. When you can even make an e-bike activity, why can you not make a velomobile activity and finally put an end to this feud.

  • I'm very disappointed by this continued lack of support. I just canceled my Premium account because there's no value in using Strava if I'm asked to log my velomobile rides as workouts.

  • And the harassment from the official side now got to a new level:
all my rides from 2013 until this week have been set to workout. So in my year totals there is only 34 km left (yesterdays rides). That was exactly the reason why I don't want to use the workout option!

Oh, and since you've asked (https://www.strava.com/discussions/club/110545/posts/405475/comments) to leave my thoughts in this topic, here's what I'm thinking right now: Fuck you, Strava!!!

  • I support the common sense solution of a separate category for velomobiles.

Sorry, we don't have an exact timeline, but it is something we are currently working on.

Thanks Shelby - any idea of when it may be launched?

    Hi Greg,

Thanks for writing in. We are working to add more categories, such as Velomobiles. We have recently recognized the increase in use and the community around them, so we do hope to improve the Strava experience for Velomobiles. Stay tuned!

Why cannot you add a 100% human powered velomobile category? Like time trial bikes or those riding in drafting pelotons or with tail winds, we are using a very legitimate way to use our muscles in beating the wind. Unless you somehow ban peloton riding, time trial bikes or the use of tailwinds, it's very unfair to ban Velomobiles. We've been asking for years now.

  • I support this idea as well, we need a velomobile category, which will not ruine the KOM ranking or be in a separate one. Still count for GF! Climb challenge, monthly ride km.

  • I suppose changing the E-Bike categorie to a Velo-Cat. When I want to make sports, I dont´need a motor and I think Strava wants to be a sportstracker.

How ever it is high time to have an own categorie for velos!

  • Still nothing :(

There is now quite a number of people using velomobiles, and many I know have basically gone "underground" in order to avoid the flagging issues.  The number of velomobile users thus is much higher than it actually appears.

  • Accessing Strava via website it is possible to assign your ride as velomobil ride, creating velomobil-segments and so on.

  • Old thread...I see the activity type now has the option of 'velomobile'. Not sure when this became available.

  • Why do Velomobile Rides not have any segments appear? Yesterday I moved four years worth of my unfaired superfast recumbent rides into the “Velomobile Ride” category, and all the segment data for these rides disappeared. I did this as a personal choice to be fair to all the upright riders on these segments that I’ve taken KOMs from. Now it seems that only if another Velomobile has ridden the same segment, only then did my ride segment appear.
