Crop or remove sections from the middle of an Activity (boat/train transfer)

It happens in my area to create a cycling route that is interrupted by a short, 15-45 minutes, boat transfer. As I would like to calculate the complete effort I have made for the day in one recording (eg if it is a Fondo) I would like to have the option to interrupt the recording during the boat trip or at least crop it after the complete route is synchronised. At the moment it is only possible to crop part of the beginning or the end of the route and not one or more parts of the middle.
See example routes below that the above could be applied.

Thank you for your efforts in putting together and maintaining this application and I hope you will consider my suggestion to further improve this great application.

  • This is useful. Less blog posts about marketing fluff and more development please.

  • Agree, would be very useful. Along with adding feature to flag individual segments, instead of a whole activity, this would make it possible to correct snags in the data without asking support for help.

  • Me too... I often ride to a station, catch a train somewhere distant and ride home.  I MEAN to pause strava on the train and usually do be sometimes. not  - cropping in the middle of a workout would be useful.

  • I would like to see the same feature.  I had trouble with this today, my garmin and the garmin connect software correctly show the ride as 21 miles, but when I import it Strava adds 7 miles of a solid line and no movement to it.  I have no way to fix this.  Tried deleting and reimporting but the same thing.  I could see if the garmin showed the same, but it's just Strava.  There definitely needs to be a way to edit a segment from the middle.

  • I found a related topic in the Knowledgebase: https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/21635258-Can-I-split-an-activity-if-I-forget-to-Reset-my-Garmin-

A couple of days back I tried to contact the Strava support with a listing of my rides in need of a split but didn't receive any response. So I spent the rainy sunday afternoon with with deleting these rides and splitting the GPX files manually in an ASCII editor where I entered and left the train and uploaded the split files as seperate rides. That worked for me and fixed my kilometer statistics but wasn't very convenient though.

  • This really needs to be addressed. I live on an island that often involves a ferry transfer. Also for shuttled rides. This issue has come up for me many times.

  • Thanks for all the feedback!

I think this conversation can take two angles:

    1. For activity flagging purposes, the ability to flag only a certain "portion" of an activity, possibly in the middle in the event that a fast train, bus, car, etc. was taken in the middle of an activity. In addition, a tool for users to remove segment matches on a certain portion of their activity for situations as mentioned above.

    2. For examples like water crossings, etc. the ability to exclude the distance while on a transfer in the middle of an activity from being added to the Activity's total distance.

For #1, we're working on some ideas that could be implemented into an improved activity flag feature.

For #2, there is a related discussion here that you might be interested in checking out:

  • Hi folks - if you check the forum I linked above, we now exclude distance if you pause the Strava mobile app.

  • Dear Elle

This is very good news and it solves most of the problems when using the Strava app.

Would this work with other GPS devices such as Garmin, Bryton etc?

    Thanks

  • good news, but can I go back and edit a past ride with this problem, i.e crop out a middle section? thanks

  • Until they implement this, you can use JOSM: http://gis.stackexchange.com/a/110770/17595

It allows you to remove points from anywhere in the GPX track.

  • Encountered this over the weekend too.  Turned off my device (Cateye Steath 50) then reactivated at the end of the boat ride for the rest of the journey.  Simply defining that part as a non-contributing segment would be good enough for me.  Thanks!

  • Pausing works great but it would be good if the paused section of a journey was clearly defined on the map of the activity, perhaps with a dotted or semi-opaque line?

  • I live in Utah, where gravity riding is HUGE. I always stop my garmin when I get on the lift, so it's not included in the segment, but the overall ride includes the elevation gain. You guys need to include a way to crop out lifts/shuttles/etc. It seems I have 2 options: leave it as one ride, but then i'm lying about distances and elevation climbed. Or, upload 9 different rides everytime I ride the lifts... It seems you created a way to merge them, but really? That's not the simplest solution...

  • I have just started with Strava and, in the absence of an easily found  'easy start' guide, used the pause button on the Android app (downloaded yesterday on s5). Then I went to lunch. Resumed the short ride after lunch, returned back to just past my start point. When I look at the uploaded data, it shows a 'Moving Time' of 1:46:59 for two moving segments of ~30m total! How can I avoid this in future when I have a natural break on an another ride, please? The phone was not moving during lunch, just paused.

  • Agree. DId a charity 100km/62 mile ride yesterday and took a wrong turn adding 1.6 miles/10 minutes to the route! Annoying thing is, my target time was under 4 hours, which when taking off the detour, I hit in 3hrs 58 mins. However, Strava of course (with the extra 10 mins) states 4 hrs 8 mins! aaahhhhh. If I could simply remove the offending U turn all would be good for my sanity. Thanks and great app though.

  • I would like to fix 'tunnels'.  In the Alps in particular there are many tunnels on climbs and descents where the trace goes haywire , correct tracking up to entering the tunnel then on exit but a total mess in between so segments cannot be matched.  It would be easy surely to say 'from here to here' and draw a straight line whilst maintaining the same change in time/altitude and distance (including the new straight line distance from entrance to exit).

    Please :-)

  • As per OP, please allow ferry crossings to be removed (or I'll add them as segments and see if the boat goes faster/slower! ;-))

  • Need this feature to remove train journeys from total distance. I use trains to get across cities and then continue.

  • Same here, I use a ferryboat and strava counts the distance between point A and B but there are no data in between, I paused/stop my gps device, so it measures as if I traveled 5 km in a straight line during the elapsed time that the ferry took to travel that distance.

  • This feature, producing a single ride, but with a transit 'gap' in it is long overdue. The app knows when you've left it on during a train journey, it can pick up marked train stations / ferry ports, using these markers and speed this feature should not only be available but also fully automated.

  • It would be a great feature. It will help to avoid multiple activities in one day which really should be one activity. Also suitable for Alpine Skiing and riding bike parks.

  • This feature would be very helpful especially when auto stop doesn't work, Wouldn't have to perform activity splits then crop then rejoining an activity without losing comments and kudos.....  Come on Strava other edits can be performed, all but deleting a section of an activity.
