Add an Activity Type for Longboard Skateboarding

My buddy does  20+ mile runs on his longboard skateboard at 15+ mph, and there is a big scene doing descents.  It seems like a good new sport for Strava.

  • Yeah! Skate or Die!
I use Alpine Ski or other sh... categories to my activity
    Skateboard Downhill
    Skateboard Street
    Skateboard Carverboard
    Skateboard Carver
    Skateboard Halfpipe
    Skateboard Bowl

It works on activities like skateboarding in a small Bowl https://www.strava.com/activities/463878481

  • There's an app called Cyclemeter that posts to Strava for you that supports skating/longboarding. It's only $2 a year and has all the premium features strava has. I've been using that since I do a lot of skating too and thought it was kind of odd that it wasn't supported

  • I also requested this. They suggested that I suggest it in this forum. It seems like that does a lot of good, looking at how far back these responses go. Many people are making the same good points over and over, yet Strava continues to have "stair stepping" as an option while taking out a legitimate sport and mode of transportation.

  • The same on WhatsApp. No emoticon of skateboard until now! Prejudice.

  • Update: I am now a happy, paying customer of Endomondo.  It has an activity: "Skateboarding".

  • I know this has been said before.....

Why not an activity simply called "Skate"? This one simple word would cover inline skates, quad skates, ice skates, skateboards, longboards, ski skates, speed skates, heelys, and ripstiks.

This just seems stubborn to me. I have 3100 miles of skating on quads, inline skates, and longboards this year and I can't choose a category called SKATE to cover all of it.

The new year is upon us and my resolution is to find a place that better suits my activities than Strava. Lemme know if you come to your senses anytime soon.

  • Good to see the team is listening to their users! But at least we have different categories for walks, runs and hikes!

  • Is this ever gonna be integrated into the app? Would be good to have at least:

    • Skateboard
    • Electric Skateboard

    Thanks.

  •  I can understand this issue from the point of view of the Strava people, especially if they really DO know a lot about the boarding community. All of the "sports" listed on Strava are generally LEGAL pastimes. It is perfectly legal to bomb a mountain pass on a bicycle. It is not legal to bomb a mountain pass on inline skates, but people really are not doing this as a rule. People ARE bombing mountain passes on longboards. The problem as I would see it for longboarding as a category is the fact that bombing mountain passes on a fancy furniture dolly is ILLEGAL almost everywhere (certainly in the USofA) outside of a few sanctioned events. By adding longboarding to the list of "sports", Strava would not only be encouraging an illegal activity, but would be complicit in encouraging people (kids  under 21 mostly) to ramp up the speeds on their already sketchy, illegal sport.

This is unfortunate for the rest of us longboard enthusiasts who cherish distance over adrenaline and just push, pump, or paddle our boards over vast distances as a FITNESS activity and not just a gravity adrenaline fix. Perhaps the Strava folks could remove the Inline Skate category and replace it with a category simply called "SKATE" and include a drop-down menu for the SKATE MODEL being used, same as they do with bikes and running shoes. As of now I am simply using the "Ride" activity type and selecting the name of the board I am using under "Bike Model". Then it really would not matter if you were bombing hills, pushing 50 miles, or pumping your board a few loops in the local park. Under  "Skate" you would list your board name or roller skate name and the description you type and the map data would tell the rest of the story.

  • People, stop asking for this. Strava made it very clear they do not care what we want. They know better what "user experience" is "best" for us. Move on.

  • From Strava support:

Thanks for writing in. I'm a Community Moderator at Strava and thought I'd reach out personally. We don't offer skateboarding as an activity type because we choose to focus on primarily Running and Cycling to build the best product we can. Yes, we do have activity types for other activities, but you'll notice that there are no segment leaderboards for those other activity types. If we added Skateboarding, it would be the same thing and so, not a very good Strava experience.

Skateboarding will not be added anytime in the near future. Apologies if that's frustrating. I know you all throw some skin on the line!

    Cheers,
    Jeremy
