Flag segments for reasons other than hazards + Trusted User Review

This is a 2-part idea that ideally would be implemented simultaneously:

1) There are many, many segments that are poorly defined, are near-duplicates, are poorly named, have errors in spelling, or are just dumb for lots of various reasons. This has been a problem from the start and is only getting worse as more users join Strava. I would like to see some way (beyond the 'Hide' button) to mark a segment for these reasons and get it reviewed and possibly edited, deleted, or merged with other similar segments. This type of flagging would not be as harsh or black-and-white as the current 'Flag Segment' action; rather, it would put a segment into a queue, to be reviewed by Trusted Users (see next item) who could take action to correct problems.

2) Trusted User Review: if you've ever used the StackOverflow/StackExchange family of websites, this will be familiar. The idea with those sites is that users gain "reputation" (community trust) by performing various tasks, such as posting a question, answering a question, getting up-votes, etc.. As a user's reputation increases, they gain privileges such as being able to edit other people's questions. I'd like to see some similar scheme for Strava but more focused on segment review, editing, etc. Reputation could be established by defining good segments (maybe there's a 3rd item here to have segment ratings?). Reputation could be decreased if a user's segments get hidden by many people or some such. There are lots of possibilities here but the point is to move the workload of "policing" segment creation and maintenance to users.

  • I agree with you Josh, there are several segments in my area (Kalamazoo, Michigan) that are just bad - like starting 100 ft before a stop sign for a busy road before continuing up a really great hill, which already has a segment on it - four actually.  Other examples include ones that start just before a turn causing you to be able to attempt the segment by entering the intersection from one direction only, then it ends just after a stop sign at a T junction which causes you to need to turn west for 20 ft just to complete a segment.

If we had a way to have users be assigned to certain geographies to be able to edit segments or even delete them in the case of being dangerous, this would be a good thing.  I would be happy to be one of these "Trusted User Reviewers" for my geography.

  • Add +1 / -1 vote for segments. Plus, if I downvoted a segment it should be hidden for me even if I've never run it.

  • Ugh, another ridiculously stupid segment has shown up in my area...even goes out on a 3 foot boat dock then does a 180 degree turn around and comes back.  If nothing else, I'd like the ability to completely hide segments so that I never have to see them, both on my ride page if I ride the segment (which exists), but especially on the Segment Explore Map page.  That Explore page is getting more and more littered with atrociously stupid segments.  Freaking 0.1 mile sprint segments, segments that take these stupid turns down boat docks...stupid stupid stupid!

  • Thanks for the feedback! We've got some great plans in the works now to address issue #1 above. We are designing a new flow for the Segment Flag which includes more reasons for a flag (and does not make a segment hazardous if the reason is not related to a hazard, like a poor name for example).

Stay tuned for these changes in the next few weeks.

#2 Is also a very cool idea. Thanks! There is a similar feature requested here: https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/27964014-Voting-for-Segments-to-determine-quality-

  • We've released some changes to the Segment Flag system on Strava.

Please check on a segment currently flagged as Hazardous to see the new options available. You'll also see changes to the flow for creating a new hazard segment flag, which allow users to report issues other than a segment hazard.

I'd appreciate all feedback about the hazard segment flag updates to be posted to this product feedback forum:

Thanks, and I look forward to your comments!

  • I like the idea of Joshua.

With or without joshuas 2. idea a rating and a comment/discussion function for segments would be helpfull.

And it should be possible to flag segments even if one has not done them, for example

    - dangerous segments, I should not follow

    - forbidden segments where the activity is not allowed

    - bad gps data - where it is not possible to follow the segment

    - bad named segements with the possibility to give hints for a better name

    - bad start/end points with the possibility to give hints for a better ones

  • I'll add a MeToo to this as it is a good idea. However given the general lack of any response from Strava to the ideas presented in this forum I don;t expect this one will get done anymore then any of the others.
