Search or Explore feature for Strava Routes

Map-based exploring/searching for Routes in the 'Explore' section, similar to the map-based segment explore that currently exists.

If someone has taken the time to create a route, chances are that route is a better indication for a good ride or run route than popular segments.

Currently, when I'm in a new location, I use popular segments from the segment explorer to drill down to activities to ry and identify good routes, in combination with popularity in Route Builder and the Strava labs world heat map. It would be nice to not have to create my own route for every location I visit. Local knowledge is the best!

  • Thanks for the great feedback! Indeed, Strava Routes are perfectly positioned to have their own search feature. The simple answer is that we will likely head in this direction, however the project has not yet been prioritized.

Please continue to leave your comments here, and let us know how you'd like to search Strava Routes - what filters, criteria, visuals would be most helpful when looking for routes?

    Thank you!

  • Generally speaking finding the routes isn't really possible right now.  It doesn't need to be complicated to start off with, even just being able to browse public routes created by someone you follow would be a start (re-use the existing view of your own routes would be fine).

  • I don't think it makes any sense that I can see all of the non-private routes of someone I follow using my iPhone Strava App, but I cannot see them in the Web client.  My friend is always making routes for us to ride, but unless I find it in my feed or unless he emails me the link, I cannot just go to his profile to find it.

  • This feature would make routes so much more useful!

It would also be useful to annotate routes or combine the view with segments that share some section with a route once it has been selected. I would like to be able to visualise where and how many popular sections a route has.

I am a trail runner using strava.

  • Another +1 for adding a route search/explore feature to Strava. Would be extremely useful for cycling in new locations and also for public rides and events.

When cycling in a new locale, the heat map gives a reasonable indication of popular roads, but being able to search for routes of a specific length / climb / difficulty in a new area would be wonderful.

  • I agree and love the idea of adding an area to search and view user created routes which are public. This would enhance Strava when traveling. Then, users could be able to plan a route that is tried and true. Currently, I can only search view my own created routes unless I use Google or some other external site to search.

Being able to give public routes kudos or ratings would be helpful feedback as well.

    Thanks.

  • yes please I want this feature.  I dont understand why strava holds back so many usefull features.

If Strava had public route search and turn by turn nav then I would buy premium. As it is premium is essentially useless.

  • Yep would love to be able to search for routes.

Would be a brilliant and obvious feature to add. Was quite amazed not there and has not been added with all the feedback for some time.

  • As well as searching routes, the ability to share an athletes' entire route catalogue would be useful. If I want to show a friend all my routes, not just an individual route I can't because there is no URL for the page.

  • Yes it's a shame Strava hasn't addressed this. I work with a cycle tourism company and we had to shift away from strava as our main route tool because they lacked this feature. In a typical season we direct 3,000+ clients to download strava for their rides with us, but now we direct them to a competitor.

shame because strava initially had our business and then lost it due to failure to implement searchable routes. Such simple solutions exist that it baffles the mind they ignore while they lose serious business to the rest of the industry that has already made this a standard. Get your game together strava!

  • I enjoy Strava, but not being able to search for routes is ridiculous.

  • Come on Strava you need to bump this up on your product roadmap. Surely it's only a few sprints of work to get something up and running - I'm spending far too much time planning routes and not enough time riding; and, if I do spend some time planning I want to share that effort with the community!!!

  • Would love to be able to explore public routes on Strava 👍 (surprised this isn't already possible).

  • Got can't even search by name in your own routes, let alone actually find routes by location. So utterly lame.

  • seriously, why can't we search routes!  when traveling this is a HUGE feature and one that mapmyride already has.  Should be simple, probably won't renew strava if this feature is not added.

  • I do know a person that posted in the past routes I'd need for my next trip, I can see the routes from my iPhone app but I cannot reach it from my laptop to download the gpx for my garmin... that's just bad. +1 for me to add route search. Segments are even not interesting anymore now that Phil Gaimon is working to get all the KOMs

  • I thought i had done this in the past when searching for a route so has this feature been removed?

  • I had been thinking I was stupid. I had even spotted a you tube video with someone showing me this feature but on my login the option is not there? Why would I want to find a segmant? I am going to Mallorca and want to find some good routes. I will be cancelling my premium when it is renewal time if this is not added.

  • My Summit renewal recently failed as i’d changed details .. then i thought about all the actually useful things Strava HAVENT done in the last few years (like this) and figured nope - wont be updating those details!

  • I haven't seen a comment for the " Strava Team "  about this since it went up.  There will be some  meaningless piece of  prose at some stage with " Management speak"

Come on Strava.... "YES" to the Feature or "NO"

  • I'll just add $0.02 for what they're worth:  it seems that a) Strava doesn't give much of a rat's backside what users want and b) it sucks that this feature hasn't been implemented five years after the request.  I find Strava's route-making procedure to be one of the better ones and Wahoo integration is less flaky for me than RWGPS or Komoot (both of which I've come to loathe), but the lack of any ability to find other routes from other users is just... I dunno... WTF do you all do there aside from implementing more ads?  Freaking ads!

Getting closer and closer to terminating my Summit membership.  None of you there seem to add anything to make this a more useful site.  This request isn't a tough one to actually implement, unless you're all just brogrammers that only know how to write spaghetti PHP.

  • Five years from the first post... and the feature is still not available and not clear whether it is in the roadmap.

The irony is that Garmin (the owner of Strava) has been offering Course Search functionality in Garmin Connect for years. And it is a free service. While Strava premium is paid for, and does not offer it.

  • Indeed! We need a way to explore public routes - even comment on them and mark POIs like tricky intersections/routing and/or interesting spots.
