Strava App for BlackBerry ( BB10 )

I'd love to see a Strava app for BlackBerry ( BB10 ).  From what I understand porting from Android is not difficult.

  • I agree with Sam.  I was able to install with Snap, but it hangs on opening with an error about Google Play or something like that.  Certainly there are other Android apps running just fine on BlackBerry 10 (Endomondo is the first one that comes to mine).  I'd like to give Strava a try!

  • Please can we have a BB10 app for Strava? It looks way better than Endomondo (which is available for BB10) and it seems a shame to leave Blackberry 10 users out in the cold! Thanks

  • From an opportunistic perspective, you Strava people might like to know that Endomondo is currently fumbling with their update when it comes to the BBY.  It's essentially non-functional and they aren't saying when it'll be fixed.  If you have an Android version of Strava that can be tweaked to work in the BBY Android emulator, now would be a very good time to make it available... Endomondo users are looking around for another solution....

  • Yup, I am about to cancel my endomondo subscription if the app is not fixed. Would happily pay for Strava if there was a bb10 app.

  • A friend asked me to post this here.  I created this a few months ago but it should still work.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just got Strava to work on my z10 if you don’t want to have to upload files anymore.

If you have google play services or strava installed, uninstall them first then load the new files.

You should just be able to copy the files over to your BB and double click on them through the file manger. You need to be running 10.2.1 to do this. You could natively install this through SNAP but it wouldn’t work due to the Google Play Services issue.

The app has been decompiled and patched to work.

  • Add me to the list for a supported Blackberry app. I currently use Fitness Tracker ($2.99) from Blackberry World on my z10. Works great to automatically upload my rides to Strava.

  • Kevin, your app worked for my Z10...but it blows up on the Z30.  Any chance of making that go?

  • I've got the hacked version installed and it works reliably.  Which makes me think, if it's easy enough for someone to hack Strava to work on the BlackBerry, why doesn't Strava just make the tweak themselves and submit to BlackBerry for inclusion in BlackBerry World?  What's the possible down side??

  • Thanks Kevin - works great on my Z10.

  • Ok, so I really love that Garmin Connect automatically populates my Strava account.  Kudos for that.  The next thing I'd love to see the folks at Strava do, is get a a Blackberry 10 app out there.  A Windows Phone 8 too, while they're at it.  I like Strava, but love my Blackberry more, so there's no way I can switch.  Training Peaks have their App on Amazon, why can't Strava port their Android App there, is beyond my comprehension.  It's the same thing they have on Google Play.  Come on Strava, get those software engineers to work.

    Thanks

    Cornel

  • This is all very frustrating Strava. Just brought my first bike ever and haven't really been on a bike for 45 years. I download this app for £3.50 on my blackberry. So off I go on my bike for the first time and I loved it. So, want to tell the world about because I'm dead chuffed with my 6.3 miles I done. Read all about Strava and my mates singing it's praises. So'yep willing to pay the £39 a year and start my new life on the bike. But can't record anything because it doesn't accept any thing from blackberry. I read all the comments from the lads about how you can getaround this problem. I'm hopeless with computers so haven't a clue what the lads are talking about. Then all we seem to get from the Community support is 'Thanks for the feedback' and that was going back to June last year. You get tell my with all your whizz kids at Stava that you still haven't found a solution to this problem to make easy for dumb idiots like me who haven't with computers. All I want to do is do the ride download the info to yourselves and then sit back and glow over my 6 miles I've just done.

Surely in the 6 months Strava has sorted this out? If you haven't maybe you should employ Endomondo because he seems to know what he is talking about. Of course this is all said in jest and would love some help of what app words with Strava before I spend another £3.50 on another useless app on my Blackberry. And please hurry becuase I feel another 6 miler coming this morning...might even hit 10 miles today. So really wanting to give you my hard earned cash for paying the top rate. I want to start challenging these guys who ride a 100 miles in a day.....now that is jest..lol

I wouldn't mind a reply to this to point me in the right direction, you lovely Strava people...

    regards

a very frustrated cyclist Alan Cottingham

  • So, looking back at my comment from November 6th... I'm still running the version Kevin linked to in this thread.  I suspect there have been updates to Strava since then, but I'm not going to mess with what is working to install the new one.

My comment is still sitting there unanswered... if someone can hack Strava or Google Play enough to run on the Blackberry, without being part of the development team, what can be so frickin' impossible that Strava can't do it themselves???  From what I've seen, Blackberry is (or was) pretty good about helping get apps running.

Sorry, I just don't get it...

  • I also have a Blackberry Z30. I saw the post of Kevin, but am rather new to the OS 10 operating software. Can some one help me with the installation? The link of Kevin shows three files. Do I need to download these all? If so, which one first and which one last.

    Many thanks to your respond.

    Greetings, Henk

  • I would also like an official BB10 (q10 here) strava app. That said, I've just used GPS Logger II, which automagically uploads to strava after I stop my ride, and it is available free in blackberry world. I think if you google search it you can find tips on setting it up with strava, but it's pretty straight forward.

  • I too am amongst the scores of people eager to see a working Strava app on BlackBerry 10. It's a shame we have to jump through hoops in order to side load an application from Android instead of having an option readily available. Thank you for your post Kevin, that still works, and it's a joy to see I can have Strava once more :)

  • Just looking at all these comments...sad that Strava won't simply unbundle the crappy Google Play services and post the .APK file.  That Kevin dude did the hack to work around this, but really Strava should just offer the raw .APK that can be updated.  Z10 and Z30 work fine now...  It is ridiculous to have to bundle this application with Google Play services...most other apps out there you just download the .APK file and go....or load up the app from Google Play on an Android tablet or phone, then use an "APK extractor" and grab the .APK...then email it to yourself, click it on the BB10 phone and it installs.  I don't understand why bundling into Play is that critical...unleash yourself!!!  (Please)

  • I agree completely.  I'm afraid to install the latest version out there, because I fully expect it needs to be 'fixed' by Kevin to work.  Given that Kevin was able to do this himself and apparently isn't affiliated with Strava, I can't for the life of me figure out why Strava won't do this themselves!!! It's a great app, but this Google Play nonsense is really getting old!!!  Strava, can you explain why this isn't a priority or even an consideration for you??

  • Would like to get an official answer on this, you can repackage the android app for Amazon App Store if anything.

I can also make a BB10 app that at least allows users to upload activity! But before I do, I want to know if Strava is already working on this.

  • I thought I had it working on my Blackberry Z30 (downloaded the apk file etc.). I could see rides of friends. However, when I tried to upload or do something else, the App ends itself.

It would be highly appreciated, if someone could get it to work... especially because I have a company Phone, and and Iphone next to it is not really handy.

  • Henk, the link provided works on both z10 and z30 (I have both)...download those files. Been using them for a long time with no issues even on the latest software.  All my friends are using it as well with no problems...well only one on a z30, his BES server seems to interfere with something but another friend has a z10 on a BES with no issues at all.

I am still surprised Strava can't juse de-couple crappy Google Play Services and provide the .apk...we could just install.  How simple is that??  C'mon Strava, I am 100% sure you can do this...or put in an option to link to google play when installing.

Anyway, this was the link from that Kevin dude...

  • Sometime ago I posted a message that the link of Kevin Sundberg did not work. I tried to install it again, and it works.

All functionality which is available on iPhone is in this App as well.

So, thank you for that Kevin.

I saw with my my friends (iphone and Android users) that they recently received an update, which has some new, interesting functionality. If ever you are going to update the BB version, please post in this forum.

    Thank you!

  • Apparently, the Strava app can run on the new Blackberry Priv. Has anyone been able to test this out?

  • Dear Elle,

I do not know exactly what you mean with 'Priv'. But the link above, provided by Kevin, worked for me (Blackberry Z30 with OS10). The link leads you to a place where you can download the right documents to get it working.

    Goodluck!!
