Add more Run Type Tags

I think the current 4 tags of Run, Race, Long Run, Workout are a bit limiting and think it would be a relatively simple feature to implement if Strava were to add more tags.  I'd like to suggest the following:

Run/Walk

Jog

Training

Sprint

Warm Up

Warm Down

  • I would suggest "Recovery Run" as a run tag.

    "Warmup/cooldown" would be useful too.

    However I don't agree with "Training" - what does this mean?

    I think "Sprint" is already covered by "Workout" and "Jog" is vague.

  • I'm currently using a plan from the Hanson's Half Marathon Method book. This book prioritizes the PACE at which a run is ran.The following types are runs would be great to designate and track.

    Easy Run

    Tempo Run (event goal pace)

    Long Run

    Strength Run

    Speed Run

  • I think "Hill Sprints" should be separate from "Workout"

  • I'd just like to be able to create my own tags.

  • I'm with Katie, just allow users to create their own. E.g. I run with my dog sometimes, which affects my pace. Being able to tag those runs as "dog" would be great for me (currently I'm just using a comment in the title), but for most people that would be noise.

  • Custom tags would be best. Personally I would like:

     * Intervals

     * Hills

     * Long run

     * Recovery run

     * Tempo

    But as the thread suggests it's different for everyone!

  • Custom tags for me too.

    I would have the same as Iain and others

     * Intervals

     * Hills

     * Long run

     * Recovery run

     * Tempo

     * Warm up/cool down

  • I agree adding 2 new tags: Warm up / Warm Down; Recovery

  • The ability to add custom run types would be great. Right now, I have to use the title to note a hill v. interval run on the activity feed. And in the training log, unless I hover over a particular run, I can't see the details and pick out all the hill runs, for example.

  • There definitely needs to be a Parkrun tag too!

  • * Orienteering

    * Night orienteering

    * Long distance orienteering

    * Sprint orienteering

    * Middle distance orienteering

    * Ultra long distance orienteering

    * Beer orienteering

    Oh, forget the last one ;-) Seriously, you need to support custom activity types or at least custom tags. IMHO of course

  • I support this idea.

    I run with my dog - would like a Canicross tag.  Reason is my pace is different with the dog - as he is pulling me along, I am getting fantastic times, but I can't compare the segments or runs between Canicross and Solo runs.

    Please allow users to add a custom tag.

  • Now that I'm using the tags, I've found them very limiting ... please add some new ones or let me do it :)

  • These should be able to be customized per user. Frankly, I'm shocked that this isn't the case - both because it's something that's available on other and more low-budget sites (such as RunningAhead) and, as a software engineer, it would be easy to do. If you're worried about mining/aggregating data, you could force users to pick a parent category from the existing types. For example, I would create Recovery and Easy, which could be associated with "Run". In the "Workout" category, I would probably add something like Interval, Tempo, Moderate, Hills, Pace and Strides. Race and Long Run are probably fine, though there are other marathon training programs that distinguish a "Medium-Long" run from a "Long Run".

  • Custom tags would be the best! I'd love to have warmup/cooldown, group run, slow run, pace run, sprints, hills, etc. But I know not everyone wants the same set. Having custom tags and colors would be perfect! It would really help use the training log feature.

  • There are so many great ideas above. Seems like the best way to do this would be to allow each user to make their own tags that can be used with any sport.

  • I would simply like the ability to tag or use "Run Type" to differentiate between road running and trail running as well as road riding and mountain biking!

  • Wow, this one's been around a while with no change.

    The one tag I really need is "recovery run," which is nice to see others request.  These are a markedly slower pace than even normal training runs, and usually on flat courses rather than my usual hills.  There's no good way to measure progress when recoveries are lumped into the mix.

     Right now we only have mysteriously medium (none and long run - which I put all my AHR runs into) and high speed (workout and race) choices.  We should have at least one recovery-based type, and perhaps an "other" category, with a naming option.  Would that be possible?

    I can easily see where custom tags would be a programmer's nightmare, but I do hope they consider adding at least "recovery."

  • A "Buggy run" tag would be helpful.

    My 10k times are a good 5 minutes slower when pushing my child in a buggy.

  • I'll add my voice to the requests for custom tags!

    Taking my dog for a casual run definitely results in different pace and it would be nice to separate.

    Whether this is by custom tags or custom run types doesn't worry me, but something!

  • I need custom tags, too. And they must be searchable.This would be much better than adding this information in the title. In Velohero I use the tag type called *Training Type*. This tag is full supported by search and in the analysis charts. I use this for tagging by commute, training, race, famlily, stage, performance test, bike trainer etc.

  • I second the need for a tag for "stroller" or "buggy" run.  I'd like to be able to track how many miles I have run with my BOB.
