Auto-pause to work with walking and hiking activities

I love your app but would like to make a suggestion for a future update. With the recent enhancement of auto pause kicking in for walking, those of us who use this feature and only walk instead of run we are no longer able to use auto pause feature so maybe in a future update you can have auto pause for a walk and auto pause for running along with the auto pause for riding.

  • I am training on intervals with C25K which means that walking is part of the exercise until I can run for 20-30 minutes sustained, if it auto pauses my workout is only going to look 5-10 minutes long!  I have repeatedly tried to explain this to their help desk and they just don't get it.  Obviously Strava is only for elite athletes and they want nothing to do with newbies that are trying to learn running and cycling.

  • Hi,

I'm not sure to understand your problem. You mean that when you choose a Run activity, Strava will auto-pause each time you're walking?

  • Geoffrey, yes that's exactly what the latest iOS app update said. Auto-pause now pauses when walking so if you want to include walking in your exercise you have to turn it off. I live in an urban area and stop for things like cars or kids on bikes so I need auto pause even if I'm doing run/walk intervals.

  • Hello!

Thank you for chiming in and letting us know your feedback about the current auto-pause feature. As we state in this help article, when walking or hiking it's recommended to turn auto-pause off because the slower speeds may falsely enable auto-pause. With auto-pause enabled at these slower speeds, the activity can appear to be missing data or have a shortened overall distance.

With auto-pause turned off, it is still possible to manually pause/resume the Strava app to account for resting time.

We will certainly consider the feedback left here, but at this time there are no plans to create an auto-pause feature tailored to walking and hiking. However, please continue to leave your votes and comments to this feature suggestion!

  • Yes apparently Strava just wants this feature for runners and is not too concerned about having auto pause for walkers so I think I will search for another app

  • Elle Anderson - clearly you guys are missing the point. We aren't doing 100% walking or hiking. If you would look at a Couch to 5k training plan you can plainly see the 30 minute workout looks something like: run 90 seconds, walk 60 seconds and repeat for 30 min. So you're saying I need to turn off the auto pause to make my walking count and manually press the pause button if I have to wait for a car to cross the street during my interval training instead of having a usable auto-pause feature while doing my interval training? I keep my phone in an arm band or flip belt so now to use Strava as it was I have to fish my phone out of my pocket when a car comes and press the pause button no doubt making a mess of my GPS signal while I'm trying to get my phone out of a spandex pocket.

It wouldn't be difficult to program a choice in the settings: auto pause on walk or auto pause on run.

Either your programmers are too lazy to do that or you guys are saying that people trying to learn your sports are unworthy of your app.

I see a Garmin in my future.

  • Julie,

I know exactly what you are talking about as my daughter also does the same workouts as you describe... With technology how it is today, how hard can it be to simply add this auto pause feature for walking (non running or biking)  in addition to the auto pause for running

  • Well, I wouldn't call our engineers lazy! They work very hard, and constantly. Decisions on where to devote engineering resources is something that is decided by an entire team with the difficult task of prioritizing the next projects. There are a lot of factors that we consider when making choices for the future direction of our product, and I hope those of you here can understand that we can't possibly do everything for all our users (we're still a small company). Please know that your feedback is heard, and we will consider the feedback here as we move forward.

  • I would like the ability to use auto-pause (such as when I'm at crosswalks waiting on a light to change, or taking a photo), but would like it to not pause when I'm merely walking.  I am a walk / run type where I run for portions, and walk for others.  Since not everyone considers walking contributory, it might be better to allow the user to set a speed and/or pace at which the auto-pause will come into effect.  Even if this was taken into account after my run was over, that would still be okay because then I could get more accurate pacing and timing.

  • Up until a week or so ago autopause worked for walks, my walking speed is faster than 4 mph. I like to log walks as well as runs and I want timing accurate. Too much hassle to pause manually. I suppose a slow runner would trigger pause too.  What pace is it set at?

I can set pause pace on my Garmin 500 cycle one, why not app on Android phone?

  • Auto-pause still applies when importing runs hikes, or walks from external GPS devices like Suunto Ambit3. And there is no way to turn it off.
