Customize Display on Record Screen

I'm new to Strava, is there any way for users to pick which statistics show up on the Record screen? For example instead of time being the primary number shown can I make it distance?

  • This is a show stopper for me.  I wanted to like Strava, but MapMyRide is way better in this respect.  That allows you to chose from a bunch of different metrics to watch at the same time.  Speed, Distance, Cadence, Duration, Time, Heart Rate, Calories, etc.

Until this changes in Strava, I will keep using MapMyRide as my primary cycling app.

  • Likewise - showstopper.  I've just come from Runtastic, and thought I'd give Strava a go.  Upgraded to Summit in the hope that it would allow Record Screen customisation; it doesn't.  Cancelling Summit and moving elsewhere.

  • Come on strava. Use your grey matter! Look at all the comments here!!!! I am still running and using my Garmin 800
Plus the iphone mount for Strava on my Casati. I look a right donk!
No way am i going to do this on my club bike Feldt! So jere the Strava goes into my back pocket and i use the Garmin.
In effect you lose the moment a competitor comes out with your functionality plus a customizable ride screen. Perhaps one of our compatriots knows of one now and I can move straight away? Am summit user.

  • In August 2017 Strava said that customizing the display on the record screen was not a priority - I wonder if they have had a rethink? This is such a basic requirement for a cycling app that I don’t understand why they are so behind and aren’t treating it with some urgency. Many of the upgrades since that time have been concentrating on the social aspects of the app, I say we get back to concentrating on the cycling aspects of the app - that’s why we are all here. Come on Strava, think about it. This is a biggie.

  • As I've said over the years, this decision is probably based on Strava's agreement with Garmin since Garmin's position has been so dominant. Strava needed the API agreement so people could seamlessly upload rides from their Garmin to Strava. In return, I would guess Strava agreed not to step on their toes by discouraging sales of Garmin hardware in offering an interface that provides everything a Garmin can. I think Garmin is losing their foothold however.

  • As all others on this thread, I have struggled with screen customization (i posted 2 years ago).  I haven't released the funds to get a Garmin as then I would be carrying 2 devices (hear that Strava and Garmin - cyclists want to minimize, not add to their load).  I have been extremely pleased with Topeaks Panobike app - and the cadence/speed sensor.  The app is customizable AND you can switch the background color to black for better battery life AND tapping screen brings it back up without signing in (at least on my iphone 8).  Input your Strava account info and it SEAMLESSLY pushes ALL info to Strava.

  • I cannot agree more on this thread. But I want to add that this is as well as important for bikers as it is for runners.

In my use case, I want to record and listen to music, so I definitely will have my mobile with me. Thus, I don't want a second device and use the Strava app to record. But the lack of functionality on the record screen is hurting. Everyone probably has a personal set of stats he wants to have during the workout and not being able to customize it is a bummer.

I would be absolute fine if some of these are premium and I would pay for it but I won't pay a cent if there is no customization of the record screen.

Please Strava, listen to this thread and implement it asap!!!

  • My Strava app suddenly switched from showing ‘miles cycled’ (as the main info on the record screen) to ‘time cycled’- how do I switch it back?

  • I'm new to Strava and especially like the "community" aspect--segments and flybys, but was really surprised that the workout display can't be customized. For example, I don't care about average speed when I'm on the road (I can see that later), but I do care about my current speed and elevation. This sort of functionality is standard on MapMyRide and others. I'd like to be able to select which stats show up on my display while working out with Strava.

  • It would be great to have current speed too 😀

  • Strava really should figure out that people are using Endomondo and syncing to Strava just to get current speed on their phones while riding. Why on earth would you want your customers using a generally inferior competitor's product simply because you're too lazy to do a tiny tweak with the screen.

This is akin to a BMW dealer having Mercedes courtesy cars for its clients...

  • Wow! I really thought I must’ve been missing something when I couldn’t figure out how to customize my tracking screen on my phone. I’ve been using Cyclometer for years but for some reason it wasn’t showing my current heart rate. along with many Rather than troubleshoot it,I figured I would try Strava since it supposed to be the Premier Bicycling app.   I immediately canceled my subscription when I realized I couldn’t make this display show basic relevant real time information like current speed/heart rate/elapsed time/elapsed mileage.  I just googled this and realized it really isn’t there. Just wow!  I think Cyclometer is about $7 a year. Their app supports the Apple Watch heart rate monitor. I just rebooted the watch and everything works fine again. Won’t be coming back to Strata anytime soon. Sounds like they’re caught in 2010 with no plans to join this decade anytime soon.

  • Yup! I am afraid the reality is they dont want to compete with Garmin where I guess they have a compatibility agreement.

If Strava did everything Garmin did,....no Garmin

I agree with you,...I still use my Garmin 800 since 2008,.....and I put my Mobile with Strava in my back pocket. If I had the latest Garmin 810 etc in fact the Garmin would have Strava as well so not necessary.

With the club my Garmin on the handlebars and the Iphone in the back pocket......so as not to look stupid,....on my time trial circuits i mount with Tezal my Iphone onto the handlebars as well for the stages........and look a complete "twonk"

I am intereste din your Cyclometer and the Apple Watch. I am going to buy an applewatch and this may replace my Garmin! I still need Strava for my club files.....but perhaps I can have that on Apple Watch as well? Question?

  • Hi Jon, the cyclometer app lets you customize your screen so that you can see relevant stats during your ride.

It’s not just one screen, you can customize the individual panes on each screen and have more detail on additional “pages’.  Here’s a quick screenshot (hopefully it shows up) of the way I have my screen organized for rides. It shows relevant information in real time including heart rate which is received from the Apple Watch.    I like to see my current speed and current heart rate, etc so that I can push myself on rides.  I also like music control buttons.  The various statistics are in real time including heart rate and current song playing so that I can pause/forward. It uses your playlists from the native Apple Music app.  I have a pouch that mounts on the stem - got it from Amazon for $20

I get what you’re saying about Garmon but it sounds like a very shortsighted corporate strategy for Strava.  Never want to ride around with two devices.

I think you’ll really like the Apple Watch, it acts as a heart monitor for many different applications.  Cyclometer actually allows the Apple Watch to work even if the phone dies, provided it has cell service.

  • Oh, and Strava does work with the Apple Watch too... for your club rides. I just don’t find it very relevant since I can’t look at it until after the ride is over, or try to look at the watch face  instead of my phone screen, which is ridiculous. So heart rate is history instead of a trading tool.

  • Joined Strava a week ago, this (political surely) decision means I am leaving.

Plenty of bike apps out there!

  • I switched from Runtastic Road Bike, a beautiful app, which is being discontinued, to Strava. But this strange my soul no feature makes me switch to some other app during the ride.

  • Looking at Strava as a replacement to Runtastic Road Bike, which is eliminating the web interface in favor of focusing on the app.  I'm surprised this thread has been going on for almost 5 years and Strava haven't done anything about it.  C'mon, your users are obviously wanting this!

  • I wanted to add my $.02. Also jumped ship from Runtastic this week. I'm forcing myself to like Strava, so far, I think it would work - EXCEPT for the fact I can't customize my ride screen.

I would like to see less shiny things related to social and more things related to, I don't know, RIDING MY BIKE.

I was hoping this would be an easy move, but it appears that it's on to something else. This is just dumb.

  • Despite the fact that this thread contains 4 YEARS of the same sentiment, nothing has changed. I've been using Strava to record rides for about 2 weeks now. I don't even use the screen--it just records. I use my limited, connected-to-nothing cateye computer for in-ride stats.

I don't think anyone at Strava is reading this, which is not wise, obviously since some people are promoting other apps here!

  • Agreed Craig. They are not telling us the truth. They say it is not a priority. It is simply a commercial agreement with Garmin. Frankly put,...they will only react when we all see an app that does BOTH,....and by then their cards will be falling down and it will be too late.

I am simply waiting for such a dual app,......and when it arrives,.....all the STRAVA cyclists in my club will switch. Same everywhere. They are taking a long term big risk for a short term convenience gain.

Smart Phones and watches WILL replace Garmin specialist devices. They can do so much more with related apps. Why delay?

Also with a recent upgrade I have lost a lot of functionality with the reset. I am simply not happy with the so little they are doing. Are they milking the business for a floatation? Who knows
